Devoted to the Promotion of Independence and Dignity of Retirement DECEMBER 2015 SNOWLINE BRANCH # 113 Big SIR Report by Don Uelmen I was just informed about the passing of Audrey dePass, the wife of SIR Honorary State Lifetime Member Ron dePass. Let’s keep the dePass family in our thoughts and prayers as we prepare for the Holiday Season. A service will be held at Chapel of the Pines at 2pm on Saturday December 19th. Our Branch participated for the second year in the Community Economic Development Association of Pollock Pines (CEDAPP) recogni- tion banquet “The Stars Come Out” which honors business owners for their assistance with commu- nity groups. Snowline Branch honorees were Cyndi Hanley of Cyndi’s Classic Embroidery for her assistance at SIR Bowling Tournaments and her help in “showing our colors”, and Dennis and Cathy Staller of ShipShape USA for their work on our Directory and Newsletter. We finished off our year of scheduled luncheon meetings by welcoming new members Gary Heidrick and Bill Campbell for a total membership of 91 Active and 3 Inactive (We started this year with 87 Active and 9 Inactive.) The Branch achieved a total of 13 new members for the year, one over our goal. Unfortunately, attrition kept our total membership pretty even. Again, I want to thank you for the honor of serving as your Big SIR and look forward to moving my seat back into the anonymity of the general mem- bership. My best wishes to Big SIR Paul Ricci and the 2016 BEC for another successful year. Respectfully Yours, Don Uelmen, Big SIR SIR Christmas Party 2014 Ron & Audrey with Santa

SNOWLINE BRANCH # 113

Big SIR Report by Don Uelmen

I was just informed about the passing of Audrey dePass, the wife of SIR Honorary State Lifetime Member Ron dePass. Let’s keep the dePass family in our thoughts and prayers as we prepare for the Holiday Season. A service will be held at Chapel of the Pines at 2pm on Saturday December 19th.

Our Branch participated for the second year in the Community Economic Development Association of Pollock Pines (CEDAPP) recogni-tion banquet “The Stars Come Out” which honors business owners for their assistance with commu-nity groups. Snowline Branch honorees were Cyndi Hanley of Cyndi’s Classic Embroidery for her assistance at SIR Bowling Tournaments and her help in “showing our colors”, and Dennis and

Cathy Staller of ShipShape USA for their work on our Directory and Newsletter.

Again, I want to thank you for the honor of serving as your Big SIR and look forward to moving my seat back into the anonymity of the general mem-bership. My best wishes to Big SIR Paul Ricci and the 2016 BEC for another successful year. Respectfully Yours, Don Uelmen, Big SIR

Little SIR Report by Paul Ricci

Our year is coming to an end. This will be my last newsletter as Little SIR as I will assume the duties of Big SIR beginning in January with the assistance of new Lit-tle SIR Paul Kramer. Don Uelman has agre ed to continue to offer the invocation at the start of our meetings. Thank you Don. We look forward to serving you in our respected positions this coming year. I also wish to extend my prayers and condolences to Ron dePass and family on the passing of his wife Audrey. We have missed you Ron the last couple of meet-ings but understand what you must have been going through. A little confusion with our speaker at our November meeting. Steve Beck was to have been our guest speaker but he apparently got the dates mixed on his calendar. Fortunately our own Tom Schulz stepped in to tell us of one of his many interesting life stories. Thank you Tom. Steve Beck was apologetic and promised to attend our January Meeting as guest speaker. I am anxious to hear the continuing story of John Sutter and his settlement here in the Sacramento region. Don’t forget to get your reservations in for the Christmas dinner. We have a new SIR member joining the senior trio plus one. Don, Mike and myself along with my wife Penni accompanying Don with the vocals. Our new addition is our SIR member Orin Stimans playing the fiddle. So, I guess we’ll have to establish a new name for our little group. As always, we welcome all of you to join in singing Christmas carols immedi-ately following dinner. Merry Christmas to All and hope to see you all at the Christmas party luncheon.

Bottle Your Own Day (BYOD) at Chas. Mitchell Winery

On Saturday November 7 SIR Branch 113 members and guests had a wonderful time at Bottle Your Own Day at the Charles B. Mitchell Winery in nearby Fairplay. Three excel-lent wines, still in tanks, were offered for this event: 2013 Petite Syrah, 2013 Sangiovese, and a full-bodied Fairplay Zinfandel Port. These prize-winning wines which normally sell for $18-26/bottle were specially discounted to a low $6.99/bottle. We first tasted, then selected, blended, bottled, corked, sealed, and labeled our selected wines. Special personalized labels were provided. In addition, compli-mentary endless gourmet pizza from Mitchell’s fire brick oven (imported from Italy) was provided. This was an excellent opportunity to pick up some fine wines for the holidays at specially discounted prices.

“Mary Poppins” – Sunday November 29th at the Imagination Thea-ter

This Sunday 40 SIR members and guests will gather at the Sportsman’s Hall to enjoy a delicious brunch before carpooling the short distance to attend the matinee performance of “Mary Poppins” at the Imagination Theater in Placerville. A full report will appear in the next issue of the Snowline Bulletin.

“Lend Me A Tenor” – 2:00 PM Matinee Sunday February 14th at the Imagination Theater

We originally purchased 40 tickets for this matinee performances and offered them to SIR members and guests on a first-come-first-served basis. All the tickets sold almost immediately. Bowling by Ray DiBasilio The Third Annual SIR vs. Moose Bowling Tournament was held on November 14th with the Moose winning the challenge by a mere six tenths of a point. WOW! What a fun tournament! First place winner Julie Ussery (Moose); second place went to Ted Jacobson (Moose); and third place Lynn Fisher (Guest). Many thanks to Cyndi Han-ley for helping me with the entries and to my better half, Cindy, for her work on brack-ets and statistics. The Third Annual SIR Branch 113 Championship Tournament will be held December

12th at 10am. This tournament is limited to our branch members only. Who will get

their name on the perpetual plaque? Past champions Bill Reed and Jorge Moreno still brag of their accom-

plishments! Will either regain the title? Or will we have a new victor? Only you will decide! Entry forms are

in this bulletin or at KPL. See you there.

Sunday February 14, 2016 - 2:00 PM Matinee

Imagination Theater, El Dorado Fairgrounds, Placerville

Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me A Tenor has delighted audiences world-wide for over 25 years and received nine

TONY awards since it was first performed in London’s West End and on Broadway.

World-renowned tenor Tito Merelli (called Il Stupendo) has signed on to play Otello at a Cleveland opera

company in the fall of 1934. This is a huge event for Cleveland. He arrives late and, through a set of crazy

circumstances, passes out after mixing wine with a huge dose of tranquilizers. Believing that the divo is

dead, the excitable opera manager orders his hapless assistant, an aspiring singer named Max, to suit up

as Otello and replace Merelli. All goes well until Morelli’s untimely return, also in costume. Meanwhile,

Morelli’s jealous wife, his ambitious female co-star, Max’s girlfriend and the flirtatious head of the opera

guild are on the scene fighting – sometimes literally – for the star’s attention. Mayhem follows as the two

Otellos are mistaken for each other. This is a wonderful comedy and is a classic farce that wins big laughs

from mistaken identity, mixed signals and misunderstandings.

We originally reserved only 40 premium seats for the 2:00 PM matinee on Sunday February 14, 2016.

Those tickets sold out quickly. We have purchased ten more and will offer them on a first come first served

basis. Our special discount price is only $9.75 per ticket

SEATS ARE LIMITED SO DON’T BE DISAPPOINTED………SIGN UP NOW!!!

THE PLAN: We’ll meet at Sportsman's Hall on Pony Express Trail at 11:30 AM and enjoy a delicious

brunch (on your own) and warm camaraderie. Following the brunch (about 12:45) we'll form carpools and

drive the short distance to the theater in Placerville.

Reflections by SIR State Chaplain, Bill Short As your SIR State Chaplain I would like to share with you a few reflections of spiritual and practical wisdom. These ideas transcend all faiths. They apply to us all. Blessed is he who guides instead of dictates, for he shall have cooperation. Blessed is he who gives credit to others, for he shall have willing helpers. Blessed is he who stands for what he believes, for he shall have peace of mind. Blessed is he who is humble, for he shall have many friends. Blessed is he who believes in the cause he serves, for he will be happy. As we enjoy our participation in our Sons In Retirement activities may we always try to contribute more than receive. May we reach out to others. May we encourage our fellow sirs. May we have a good time!

About the coupon below: Oftentimes a member misses our luncheon meeting because something occurs which prevents him from attending. A call to his caller or attendance chairman should be made to explain. Usually, this results in an EX-CUSED absence. If no acceptable reason is given, it's an Unexcused absence. In other cases a member says he will attend, but he doesn't and no explanation is given. This also is an Unexcused absence. Unexcused absences are costly to the Branch and to other members who attend regularly and contribute to Branch expenses. Attendance at the luncheon meetings is a SIR requirement. The coupon is here for you to use if you are so inclined. Thank you; from your executive committee.
