Presidential ReportOctober 2009

WOW!!!!!!!!!!About all I can say about the fabulous turnout we had at the 50th

Anniversary Celebration at our fall picnic. Over 100 families and around 300 people in our front yard—didn’t think it could happen. We had enough food and I appreciate those who waited patiently in line to get their meal and WHAT A DELECTABLE DESSERT BAR we had.

Only have a couple of regrets:--I didn’t introduce our Mayor’s Neighborhood Liaison, Noelle Malatestinic. Noelle has been helping take care of issues in the neighborhood like clogged drains, erosion, signage, etc., and she took time out of her busy schedule, traveled from her home on the Westside and I spaced introducing her. Hope some of you got to meet her.

--I didn’t mention the neighbors whose yards you touched who need to be thanked:

--Fergusons—Supplied tent and driveway for corn hole and basketball--Chamblins—Group photo--Adams—Face painting and moonwalk--Denise Kraft/Jim Leonard—Volleyball--Weks—Toilet placement

Diane and I have great neighbors and we appreciate them very much.

--Did you notice the cool banner? --Jane Roberson designed it—Thanks!

--And kudos to Sondrea Ozolins for heading up the face painting.

Also thanks goes out to Indian Creek Elementary School for letting us use some tables and chairs when had so many RSVP’s and E. 91st St. Christian church for letting us use their choir risers for the group picture.

Once again, thanks to all, especially Steve Sergi from REMAX Realty for providing all the meat and cooking for the party (grill provided by Devon Country Club), who helped put this together and provided pictures and historical “stuff” from years past. We can’t do it without all of us. For those of you who didn’t make it, we missed you and look forward to seeing you next time. Devonshire III and VI is a great place to live!

See you around the neighborhood,John Haines

The Devonshire sign was located at Fall Creek and Brokenhurst and the other picture is a view of Devonshire from Graham Road and East 62nd Place.

Leaf CollectionThe Department of Public Works (DPW) conducts the annual Leaf Collection Program to help our citizens dispose of the large number of leaves (more than 9,000 tons--or, 18 million pounds!) each fall. This program helps your Indianapolis/Marion County environment in two great ways-- ~ It produces useable compost, offered free to citizens, to help strengthen and beautify lawns and gardens. ~ By not burning the leaves, we can all enjoy that crisp Fall air better (and see those beautiful trees more clearly). That's why

open burning of leaves is illegal in Marion County.

2009 Fall Leaf Collection will run from Monday November 9th through Friday, December 4th. Each Household is permitted to place up to 40 bags of leaves for weekly disposal.

Fall Leaf Collection Guidelines:

No more than 10 items may be regular household trash, per standard trash pickup rules. For example, in a hand collection area, a resident may set out 2 bags of trash and up to 38 bags of leaves. Or, 8 bags of trash and up to 32 bags of leaves. For 96-gallon cart collection areas, all leaves must be bagged and at least 3 feet away from the cart in order to allow DPW trucks to continue to service the cart. To ensure a successful collection effort, Indianapolis residents are asked to follow these simple guidelines:*Place leaves in large plastic trash bags, specially-built large paper lawn-waste

bags, or standard trash cans and containers. *Place the leaf bags/containers out by 7:00 a.m. on your regular trash day. *Separate your leaf pick-up from your regular trash (such as, putting the leaves on the opposite side of your driveway; using different colored bags for the leaves; or, using different colored tie wraps on the leaf bags). *Make sure sewer inlets and drainage pipes are kept clear of leaves to avoid se-rious drainage or flooding problems.*Free compost is available at the Southside Landfill located at 2577 S. Kentucky Ave., (317) 247-6808. Compost can be used as a soil conditioner, potting soil or mulch. Using compost improves soil aeration, drainage and nutrient exchange - improving the health of lawns and helping gardens grow.

DPW would like to remind residents that...OPEN BURNING OF LEAVES IS ILLEGAL IN INDIANAPOLIS/MARION COUNTY!

For questions regarding leaf collection, please contact the Mayor's Action Center online, or call (317) 327-4MAC for assistance.

Devonshire III & VI Meeting Minutes

The September meeting was held at the home of Sheryl Holko on September 17, 2009. In attendance were Rick Thedwall, Sheryl Holko, John Haines, Laura King, Todd Roberson, Denny Dinn, Bob Kramer, and Chery Snyder.

The Board approved the August minutes.

The next order of business was an update from Denny Dinn on the Crime Watch committee. Members of the Crime Watch committee (and interested volunteers) will now have magnetic “Crime Watch” signs for their vehicles. This will give our Crime Watch volunteers even more visibility, which is hoped to be a further deterrent to crime. There have been no reported incidents since June. A complete report from Denny will be in the October Crier.

The treasurer’s report was reviewed and approved. An update was given on the number of residents who have paid their annual dues as well as an update on the Capital Campaign for improved neighborhood signage. Updated figures will be in included in the October Crier. All residents are asked to please send in their annual dues--$35—as soon as possible (if they’ve not already done so).

Laura King reported on her progress with the 2010 Directory. Treasurer Todd Roberson and his wife Jane are working on “cleaning up” our neighborhood database of information. It will be completed by November 1st with an anticipated December 1st availability for residents (probably at the Holiday Party in December).

The remainder of the evening was spent in finalizing plans for the Fall Picnic/50th Anniversary celebration. The event will be held on Sunday, September 27th. The evening will start at 4pm and end at 7pm. A number of items have been gathered for the “history table” which will include photos and documents from the early days of our neighborhood. We hope to have a report (and photos!) of this celebration in time for the October Crier.

We settled on the date of Sunday, October 25th for the Halloween Hayride (further details in this October Crier).

As always, all residents who have not yet signed up to receive the electronic e-mailed version of the Crier are asked to contact Sheryl Holko at [email protected] so that your e-mail address can be added to the list.

The next Neighborhood meeting will be held on Thursday, October 15th at 7:30pm at the home of Chery Snyder, 5754 Fall Creek Road.

Respectfully Submitted,Sheryl L. Holko, Secretary

They have already been out there to re-evaluate the situation and fixed the problem on Monday, September 28—Great Job Neighbors, Noelle, and the DPW.

Crime Watch News

The past month has been the quietest in quite a while. I have received no reports of burglaries or vandalism. Now we have a new task for Crime Watch. As those of you who attended the very successful 50th Anniversary Neighborhood Picnic and heard IMPD North District Commander Robert Holt know... it is complacency. He stated after reviewing the police activity in our area that we have done a very good job at developing a safe neighborhood. Please continue to do what has gotten us to this enviable position. Remember to check and keep your doors and windows locked and keep your garage door shut, especially after dark. Also, exterior lighting is a good deterrent.

The news reports over the past several weeks have had a number of reports of burglaries and auto break-ins on the northwest and far northeast sides of town. Do not leave any valuables or garage door openers in your car or trunk. At some point the criminal element will check out our neighborhood. Let's be prepared. Report any suspicious activity by calling 911 and then let me know. I appreciate any information regardless of how small you may think it is. Communication is a key element in a successful Crime Watch organization. Please make sure you are on the email notification list to receive Crime Watch Alerts. Thank you.

A laptop and phone were found at Ashurst and Graham on Sunday evening on the 27th. Please contact me if you know anything about it.
