Course Aims
This five-day summer school is designed for peopleaged 17 plus interested in developing skills indevising theatre. It may be useful for anyone wishingto perform at the next level, pursue a pathway tofurther training or explore a career in this field.Specifically you might be teacher, have your owncompany, work as a solo artist in the live arts sector,direct or perform in devised, amateur, communityor educational theatre or work as freelance dramapractitioner for theatre companies or communityorganisations.
The course aims to introduce its students to variedtechniques, methodologies, theories and practicesinvolved in devising theatre. The students will alsobe involved in other pedagogical conventions usedwithin the Contemporary Performance Practicedegree programme, such as a daily practice of eithervoice or yoga training.
By the end of this intensive short course, studentsshould have:
been introduced to a range of techniques usefulto the devising process
developed an appreciation of the creative process
and its relationship to a final product explored key aspects of contemporary devising
processes such as the use of text, movement andthe ensemble
had an opportunity to develop personal creativeideas within a collaborative process

Deborah Richardson-Webb
Deborah is the Head of Performance Pedagogyand currently teaches on the BA ContemporaryPerformance Practice course at the Royal
Conservatoire. She is an experienced director,devisor, collaborator and teacher.
Deborah is involved in developing an understandingof pedagogy in a performance context and theapplication of quality arts practices in differing socialcontexts.
Deborah has taught in several countries includingBelgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, USAand the former USSR. Deborah has developed andled courses for many groups including primaryand secondary teachers, PGCE students, andperformance students.
Course Content
This inspiring and motivating summer school isbrought to you by nationally and internationallyrecognised performance practitioners andteachers. The team of specialists, both individuallyand collectively, represent a theatre movementof considerable renown in Scotland, the UK andoverseas.
This short course will be suited to you if you areinterested in making new theatre that is vibrant,challenging and meaningful in a changing societyand industry.
During this one-week intensive experience you will
work with the Royal Conservatoires specialists indevising performance and other like-minded peopleto make a short piece of original theatre out ofeveryday stories and experiences.
In a supportive and open environment you willexplore and experiment using contemporarytechniques to develop essential performanceskills. This creative process will be designed,enacted, developed and delivered by you and yourcollaborating summer school colleagues.
You will have the opportunit y to develop andrehearse your own creative ideas as well as those that
are part of a collaborative project and ensemble.
The short course will provide a fun, supportive andchallenging environment in which all students, frombeginners to advanced, can explore and learn.
The summer school will conclude with an informalpresentation of your work to an invited audience.This will take place on Friday 27 July at 3pm in theRoyal Conservatoires Chandler Studio Theatre.

Student PreparationBefore you attend:
No previous experience in devising theatre isrequired, but an open mind and an interest increating exciting new performance with others isessential.
Students will be contacted one month prior to thesummer school start date with an initial task to bring
with them for the beginning of the course.
While you are here:
Students should dress appropriately in loose and
comfortable clothing that covers the body. Please beprepared to work without shoes if required.
Students should bring water as activities in thiscourse will be physical.
Students should also bring a notepad and pen tomake notes during classes.
At the end of the course students are expected toparticipate in a full evaluation of their experienceto help us understand how you benefitted from
your experience and also how we might develop ourcourses in the future.
