E85 Ethanol- Biofuel

• Why Ethanol?

• Ethanol used as a racing fuel. • Used widely today. • Saw it on the news.• You can make it at home.

What Is E85 Ethanol?

• Ethanol is basicaly pure alcohol. • E85 Ethanol is a bio-fuel made from

fermented grains that is treated with chemicals, filtered, then mixed 85% Ethanol, 15% traditional gasoline.

What is E85 Ethanol used for

• Currently, E85 ethanol is used as an alternative to gasoline in many cars.

• Cars labeled with the Flex-Fuel badge are made to be able to drive on gasoline or E85 Ethanol.

The Manufacturing Process

Obtain a license.

• A special alcohol license is required to make any type of alcohol. A license to make ethanol is usually free as long as you are producing less than 10,000 gallons a year.

• To obtain this license visit http://abc.utah.gov/

Calculate how much to make.

• How much product you’ll need is determined by the size of your boiler. For a 100 gallon boiler, you will need 350 lb. of pre milled grain, 40 gallons of water, 91 grams of alpha amylase. This will give you 18.5 gallons of ethanol and 21.8 gallons of E85.

The Grain.

• Any type of grain may be used to make ethynol, but you will have to get your grain milled into a fine powder using either a garin mill or a hammer mill.

• Corn, wheat, and surgar are the most commonly used grains.

The Mixture is started.

• The milled grain is then mixed with water and alpha amylase and boiled for 20-30 min.

• Next glucoamylase is added before the mixture is cooled.

• Yeast is added and the mixture is fermented.

Distillation

• The Mixture is then distilled at 175 degrees fahrenheit.

• The rest is then discarded.

Filtering

• The Distilled ethanol is then filtered through an activated carbon filter to capture any volatile organic compounds.

Drying the Ethanol.

• The filtered mixture is then dryed by mixing it with zeolite .

• Zeolite is an aluminum-silica substance that absorbs carbon dioxide and water.

• Let the ethanol/zeolite mixture sit over night in a metal can.

• Filter dehydrated ethanol into another container using a simple screen.

Final steps

• The final step to make E85 Ethanol is to add gasoline.

• To figure out how much gas to add, just multiply the amount of ethanol you just made by .15.

• Use a hydrometer to make sure your E85 is 200 proof.

Overview

Legal implications

• The only legal impilacations to this process is that you must obtain the proper license.

Social Implications

• Subsidized by government. • Cheaper in the end. $1.89-$2.69• Less horse power. • Cleaner buring fuel.• Less MPG
