TRENTON DEVILS (13-17-0-3, 29pts) vs ELMIRA JACKALS (17-12-5-0, 39pts) Game 34 ◦ Friday, January 14, 2011 ◦ 7:00 p.m. ◦ Sun National Bank Center, Trenton, NJ

Page 3: Devils Extra 2011_01_14 Game 34 vs Elmira

Through the first nine games this season, Trenton’s leading scorer, and arguably its best player, was its captain Trevor Kell. With Trenton, Kell tallied five goals and nine assists, and was a plus-six, a rating that has kept Trevor the Devils’ team leader in that category all season. Kell scored Trenton’s only goal in his return to the lineup Wednesday, after he spent 21 games with AHL-Albany, where his most noted performance was a two-point, one goal and one assist effort against goaltender Michael Leighton and the Adirondack Phantoms,

at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall December 5. A graduate of head coach Dale Hunter’s vaunted junior program with the London Knights with whom Kell won the Memorial Cup championship in 2004-05, Kell is a fourth-year pro who brings back with him to Trenton the added experience of a quarter-season tenure in the AHL. Upon his return to Trenton, besides being expected to contribute offensively, Kell brings leadership back to Trenton, as the Devils never replaced Kell as captain during his two-month absence.

STREET PAVES THE WAY FOR WHEELING 4-1 WINTrenton, NJ – Three different Nailers registered multiple points and Peter Delmas made 32 saves on 33 shots as Wheeling earned its fourth win in five games against the Devils this season, a 4-1 victory Wednesday at Sun National Bank Center. The loss extends the Devils’ season-high losing streak to four games, as Trenton’s record drops to 13-17-0-3. By winning their second straight, the Nailers improve to 19-14-0-2, widening Wheeling’s lead in the North Division to five points over the second place Cincinnati Cyclones.

With Dave Caruso recalled to AHL-Albany, Shane Connelly started for the second time in the last three games, and took the loss after stopping 25 of the Nailers’ 29 shots against him. Connelly’s record drops to 2-7-1-1, 0-3-0-1 for the Devils, with the Cheltenham, PA native still in search of his first win in a Trenton uniform.

A bright spot for the Devils in their loss Wednesday was their captain, Trevor Kell, who netted his sixth goal of the season in the second period, playing for Trenton for the first time since November 13. Ryan Ginand broke a three-game pointless streak by earning a helper on Kell’s marker, moving Ginand into a three-way tie for fifth place in ECHL scoring with 36 points.

The story of the game though was the Nailers’ balanced attack, which saw Ben Street (2g, 2a), Mikael Bedard (2g, 1a) and David Urquhart (2 assists) compile multi-point games. Ben Street’s four points move him into a tie with Kael Mouillierat of the Idaho Steelheads atop the ECHL rookie-scoring race with 36 points. Earlier in the day, Street had been reassigned to the Nailers from AHL-Wilkes-Barre Scranton and Urquhart from AHL-Hamilton.

But while Street was the offensive headliner, the Nailers’ strong supporting cast which entered the game with the league’s fourth-ranked offense, also made big contributions in the club’s first visit to Sun National Bank Center this season. Mikael Bedard scored two goals to earn him his first-career two-goal game in the ECHL, potting his first of the night 5:13 into the first period to open the scoring on an impressive setup from Street and Nick Petersen. Street made the score

2-0 10:22 later by scoring past Shane Connelly on a great fake though Devils defenders.

Although it appeared as if Trevor Kell’s score - which narrowed Wheeling’s lead to 2-1 in the second period - was Trenton’s ticket back into the game, Street scored his second goal 29 seconds after Kell struck for Trenton, restoring Wheeling’s two-goal lead and putting a damper on Trenton’s comeback plans. Mikael Bedard capped the scoring at even strength 14:44 into the third period to make the score 4-1.

The Devils attempt to halt their losing streak Friday night when they hose the Elmira Jackals at 7:00 p.m. This will be the eighth of 16 meetings between Trenton and Elmira this season, with the Devils having won three of the last four matchups.

No Curtailing the Captain

A Deeper RosterBoth Darcy Zajac and Myles Stoesz returned to the lineup on Wednesday

night and Friday vs. Elmira, defenseman T.J. Miller will dress for the first time since December 11.

Winnipeg native Darcy Zajac returned to Trenton after a 15-game stint in AHL-Albany, after playing 14 games for the T-Devils earlier this season. With Trenton, Zajac recorded his first professional goal, October 28 vs. the Gwinnett Gladiators at Sun National Bank Center. With Albany, Zajac’s lone goal came in Binghamton against the Senators on December 31. If Zajac, a former three-time member of the WCHA All-Academic team while at the University of North Dakota, can learn from his time in the AHL, Trenton will receive an improved version of a player who was already one of its best all-around forwards in the season’s first two months.

Myles Stoesz’s return to Trenton came after the Steinbach, Manitoba native appeared in action with Trenton in each of the last two seasons. With the T-Devils, Stoesz has always been a physical presence, accumulating 129 penalty minutes in 30 games, including his two against Wheeling Wednesday.. Stoesz’s tendency to play the body worked in conjunction with an ability to chip in the occasional goal last season, prompting his first promotion to the AHL in his professional career. With the Devils’ AHL affiliates in Lowell last season, and Albany this season, Stoesz continued to show the attributes which earned him his call-up, registering 178 penalty minutes in 42 games.

Miller, 24, is in his first season of professional hockey as a Trenton Devil in 2010-11, having played the past four seasons collegiately for Northern Michigan University (CCHA). In four seasons as a Wildcat, Miller was regularly one of his team’s top defensmen, winning the Don Waddell Award as his team’s top freshman player in 2006-07. In Miller’s first season at Northern Michigan in 2006-07, he also was first on his team among freshmen in scoring with 14 points (2g, 12a). Before his college career, the Placentia, California native played junior hockey in the BCHL for two seasons with the Surrey Eagles and the Penticton Vees, being named the league’s Defenseman of the Year in the 2005-06 season, when he netted 16 goals and 32 assists in 60 games. Originally drafted in the fourth round (107th overall) of the 2006 NHL Draft by the New Jersey Devils, the 6-4 210-lb. blue liner was born on September 15, 1986.

Page 4: Devils Extra 2011_01_14 Game 34 vs Elmira

The Devils take on the Jackals for the eighth time this season Friday at SunCenter. After dropping the first three meetings, the Devils have won three of the last four matchups with their division rival. The Jackals are second in the Atlantic Division, seven points behind the Reading Royals, but 10 points ahead of third-place Trenton. Elmira is led offensively by Justin Donati who is third in the ECHL with 41 points (11g, 30a). Although the Jackals have won only four of their last 10 games, Elmira comes to Trenton fresh off a 2-1 Wednesday night victory in Toledo in which Justin Donati potted his first goal since December 18 when he scored twice, also against Toledo.

Trenton’s lineup got a boost Wednesday with forwards Trevor Kell, Myles Stoesz and Darcy Zajac coming down from AHL-Albany, and Trenton’s defense gets a shot in the arm Friday with the return of T.J. Miller from 21-day injured reserve. Miller was placed on IR in mid December and has missed the last 11 games after appearing in 20 of Trenton’s first 22 contests. Goalie Dave Caruso remains in Albany.

Elmira has made several transactions in the last week, including Friday’s signing of former Yale defeneman David Inman and the return of forward Brock McBride from AHL-Houston. Meanwhile, the Jackals are without defenseman John de Gray, forward Jamie Fraser and goalie Mike Broduer who were each reassigned to AHL clubs.

Wheeling Scouting Report* Elmira’s offense has scored 119 goals, which is the fourth most in

the Eastern Conference. Trenton has 104, which is tied for seventh most.* The Jackals have given up 113 markers, which is seventh in the

conference, while the Devils’ 109 goals-against are eighth.* Against each other, the Jackals have scored 31 times, and the Devils

23 times against Elmira, translating into a season series which has seen the Jackals win four of the first even meetings. Trenton however has won three of the last four head-to-head contests.

* Elmira holds slight edges over the Devils in both special teams’ categories, with the Jackals’ power play sitting ninth (17%) and penalty kill eighth (84.4%). Trenton’s PP ranks 11th, but at 16.7%, is only .3% behind Elmira’s. The Devils PK trails the Jackals’ PK by only .9%, with its 83.5% ranking 11th in the ECHL.

* The Jackals’ leading point scorer is Justin Donati, whose 41 points (11g, 30a) rank third in the ECHL, a season after he finished second in ECHL scoring with 104 points (42g, 62a). Lasts easin, Justin Donati trailed only his brother and teammate, Tyler, who led the ECHL in scoring with 114 points (38g, 76a) in 2009-10. This season, Tyler Donati has six goals and seven assists in 13 games with Elmira, having missed a huge portion of the Jackals’ games due to injuries, and a stint in the AHL with the Hartford Wolf Pack/Connecticut Whale.

* Marco Cousineau has been the Jackals’ top goaltender all season. Cousineau is 1-1 against Trenton, and 10-6-4 overall. Daren Machesney and Zane Kalemba have also seen action in the season series, with the pair of puck-stoppers having been traded for each other on December 7, when Elmira received Machesney from Victoria for Kalemba, a native of Saddle Brook, New Jersey.

Trenton Scouting Report* Ryan Ginand leads Trenton scorers with 36 points (15g, 21a) in 32

games. Ginand has three goals and two assists in the last two games against the Jackals, including a hat trick at Elmira December 17. After three-game drought in South Carolina, Ginand picked up an assist vs. Wheeling Wednesday.

* Ginand leads the ECHL in shots on goal (212) besting the second most frequent shooter in the league, Wheeling’s Ben Street (155).

* Shane Connelly has started two of the last three games for the Devils, and is expecting to get the nod Friday. Trenton’s usual starter, Dave Caruso, was called up to AHL-Albany earlier in the week to fill in for a sidelined Jeff Frazee.

* Trenton’s Myles Stoesz recorded 47 of his 97 penalty minutes last season against the Elmira Jackals over a span of five games.

* Justin Coutu appeared in the first 30 games of the season for Trenton, but has been out for the last three with an injury. The defenseman leads the Devils in penalty minutes with 59. The only player to dress for every Trenton game this season is forward Jeff Prough.

* Trevor Kell has recorded points in his last four games for Trenton, a streak that began November 5 and was put on hold while he was promoted to AHL-Albany. In his first game back in Trenton Wednesday vs. Wheeling, Kell scored fifth goal of the season.

* Dan Charleston did not record a point in Wednesday’s game vs. Wheeling, only the second time in 11 games this year he’s been scoreless.

* The Devils play their 19th home game of the season Friday, marking the beginning of the second half of their 36-game home schedule. Trenton reaches the halfway point of the season overall on Monday vs. Reading, the team’s 36th of 72 games this regular season.

Friday night’s game re-news a rivalry between two of the toughest pugilists in minor league hockey: Trenton’s Myles Stoesz and Elmira’s Jon Mirasty. Stoesz and Mirasty had one of the most ferocious battles in hockey last March 12 while both were in the AHL, and tonight will be the first time the two will be on the same ice since that battle nearly ten months ago. When Albany hosted Syracuse November 12 of this season, Stoesz made his season debut, but Mirasty was scratched for the Crunch.

On Wednesday, Stoesz played his first game with Trenton this season, and his two penalty minutes against Wheeling gave him 129 in 30

career games for the T-Devils. Among Stoesz’s 169 games as a pro, 42 came with the Devils’ affiliates in Lowell and Albany over the last two seasons. A total of 756 career penalty minutes averages to 5.9 per game.

Jon “Nasty” Mirasty arrived in Elmira from the Syracuse Crunch December 31, and in four games with the Jackals, he has accumulated 43 penalty minutes and received a two-game suspension for his actions in Saturday’s game in Kalamazoo; Friday is his first game back. Mirasty has spent the last four seasons with Syracuse, amassing a total of 751 minutes in the sin-bin over 184 games, 4.1 per game.

Trenton’s #18 Ryan Hayes battles with Elmira’s #5 Patrick Coloumbe.
