DC COMICS TOP AUGUST 2013 SOLICITATIONSTrinity War concludes as the Justice League take on the Secret Society of Super-Villains who have plans for Pandora’s Box. MARVEL COMICS TOP AUGUST 2013 SOLICITATIONSMarvel is mapping the events between Jonathan Hickman’s Infinity and next year’s Guardians of the Galaxy film. Hickman planted the seeds for Infinity within the first issue of his Avengers and New Avengers run. This is similar to what Brian Michael Bendis did when he began New Avengers after Avengers Disassembled which led to Secret Invasion. Infinity promises to make sure why its called the Marvel Universe as the story takes place both in space and on Earth.

Highlights from other Marvel Comics solicitations include:

- Jason Aaron finishes his origin of the ultimate villain in Thanos Rising #5

- The Sentient Iron Man returns in Avengers A.I. #2

- Spider-Man finally ends the reign of Hobgoblin in Superior Spider-Man #15 & 16

- The God Butcher ends and Thor returns to Earth in Thor: God of Thunder #11 & 12

- Jean Grey falls in love with another original X-Men in All-New X-Men #15

- Dazzler becomes an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Uncanny X-Men #10

- Writer Paul Cornell makes Wolverine killable starting in Wolverine #8

There are several time traveling stories in the Marvel Universe beginning with Age of Ultron, Thor: God of Thunder, Uncanny Avengers, and All-New X-Men. Later this year the X-Men deals with the Battle of the Atom in September as well as the return of Spider-Man 2099 in Superior Spider-Man. All these stories will have a ripple effect in the Marvel Universe as the writers are building something bigger. Especially after Neil Gaiman introduced Angela into Marvel Universe.

Last month Marvel solicited Age of Ultron #10 UC with both and the artist listed as classified. Now it has been revealed the writer and artist is Joshua Hale Fialkov (I, Vampire) and Leonard Kirk and the title is listed as the second issue called Hunger. We also discover UC stands for Universal Constant. We now know a universal rift opens up letting Angela into the Marvel Universe. The Universal Constant is indeed Galactus however it is all we know so far. Many fans believed this issue was originally a one-shot however they may drop the book after discovering it’s a mini-series. Usually fans like collected mini-series as opposed to individual issues.

IMAGE COMICS TOP AUGUST 2013 SOLICITATIONSJ. Michael Straczynski continues to build his Joe Comics brand with a new title called The Sidekick. Along with Ten Grand, both titles are sure to create a buzz in the back issue market.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY CRITIQUES

FCBD 2013: INFINITYThe upcoming Jonathan Hickman’s Infinity begins in August with six issues and two book ends as well as an Avengers tie-in drawn by Leinil Yu. Hickman admits his Avengers and New Avengers stories are open-ended as they begin to come together during Infinity. The Free Comic Day Issue does not expand on any stories other than Thanos is targeting Earth for some reason. The issue is beautifully drawn but poorly structured as it gives very little of what will happen when the Infinity event begins.

FILLER ISSUE - 2 OUT OF 5

FCBD: STAR WARS AND CAPTAIN MIDNIGHTBrian Wood brings The Assassination of Darth Vader which takes place 5 years after the Battle of Yavin for Free Comic Book Day. RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS ANNUAL #1Writer James Tynion IV (Talon) serves as both the main series as well as the annual. This issue highlights the secret history between Green Arrow and Roy Harper. Years ago Roy saw Dr. Hugo Strange revealing Green Arrow does not trust him. Roy helped Green Arrow build tech he needed to fight crime however he did not use them. Roy wanted to join Green Arrow however he refused. In the present Cheshire arrives to collect the $500 million bounty on the Outlaws. Green Arrow unknowingly leads her to them.

This issue promised the untold history between the conflict between Green Arrow and Roy Harper however it did not. It only introduced elements to be carried into the main Justice League of America and Red Hood and the Outlaws series. This issue would have been better served if it was a stand alone introducing us to the characters and why we should care about them.

NEEDS IMPROVEMENT – 3 OUT OF 5

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT ANNUAL #1Writer Gregg Hurwitz creates a wonderful story which has three Batman villains unite to confront the Dark Knight. The Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, and the Penguin arrive at the Arkham Detention Facility for Youth thinking each was brought there by the other. They all believe they have been played however they all stumble on top of one another to get out. They are knocked out by their own devices and wake up in the morning. It is revealed Bruce Wayne was behind it all to keep them occupied for one night so he could get some rest. There is enough Batman books out there so it was nice to finally see the villains in the spotlight for once.

RECOMMENDED – 4 OUT OF 5

EARTH 2 ANNUAL #1Writer James Robinson creates the Earth 2 world within the first annual. After reading this issue, it makes you want to go back and read the first 12 issues of Earth 2. The identity of this new Batman is yet to be revealed. Other characters include Captain Pratt, Captain Steel, Hawkgirl, Mr. Miracle and Big Barda, as well as Fury the new Wonder Woman who was introduced in Earth 2 #8.
