Juliet Rickard - Adjudicator
Monday 21st June 2021
No. 1, Almary Green
DEVESON MUSIC PRIZES 2021
The daughter of a drummer, Juliet rebelled and took up the Oboe in secondary school!
She went on to play in the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra, continuing her studies at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. As well as playing professionally, Juliet has worked in music education for nearly 40 years in various roles, including Head of woodwind and Assistant Head for Norfolk Music Service. In 2013 she was appointed as Head of Centre for Norfolk Centre for Young Musicians (NCYM, a division of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama). A passionate advocate for orchestral playing, Juliet was also director of Norfolk County Youth Orchestra for 12 years (recently taken over by Guildhall) and Triorca, an international youth orchestra conducted by Nicolas Daniel OBE.
Creating the right environment for all students to thrive, develop their confidence and musical self has always been the focus for her work and since 2013, Juliet has seen over 30 students from NCYM, NCYO and Triorca progress to study music at conservatoire and university.
She remains committed to creating musical opportunities for Norfolk students to study with inspiring professionals, with the benefit of bursaries, scholarships and support from one of the highest ranking world conservatoires.

The Deveson Music Prizes were endowed in 1984 by the parents of James Deveson (ON). The music department was then in its infancy and, at that time, only the House Music Festival provided the opportunity for solo performers to be assessed by an outside adjudicator.
The Deveson Prize replaced the earlier Lumb Prize for Musical Performance. Two extra categories have been added over the years - the Intermediate and Lower 4 prizes. The event has traditionally been held in the Trinity term.
