Development of Science and Technology

Pre-historic times

Housing – built simple shelters, or lived in caves

Food- gathered beries, hunted wild animals- Later they learned basics of farming, so thex could eat grain- They also started to domesticate animals such as sheep and goats

which provided them with meat and skins

Inventions and discoveries- The first important discovery – discovery of the fire(people could prepare food on the fire and heat themselves)- Simple tools were invented – knives, needles, spears, bows, arrows- The invention of the wheel - made transportarion goods easier

Grain = zrno, obilie, spears – oštepy, bow – luk, arrow - šíp

The centuries of discoveries

15th and 16th centuries were centuries of discoveries and explorations

- New continents were discovered like – America by Christopher Columbus (1492)

- Later Australia by James Cook- other continents were explored like Asia and

Africa (Vasco de Gama, Amerigo Vespucci)

The Industrial Revolution

The 18th and 19th centuriesIR – completely changed the world- manufactures were replaced by factories• IR is a period during which agrarian societies

changed into industrial ones. • In manufactures peple used simple hand tools

or basic machines. • Industrialization brought about powered,

machinery, factories and mass production.• The first and the most important industries

were iron and textile industries

The Industrial Revolution

Important inventions: - Steam engine (J. Watt)- Light bulb (T.A.Edison)- Electric motor (M. Faraday) - the first petrol- driven car (K.Benz)Traditional material (cotton, linen, silk) were still

used but new modern materials appeared (rubber, plastic, synthetic fibres)

Other technical inventions

Since IR scientific progress has continued very quickly and especially during 20th and 21th centuries

Communication has improved – how?

The telephoneTelevision Mobile (cell) phones ... enables us to ....Computers

Pros and cons

20th and 21st centuries

• The development of science and technology is going forward rapidly

• The inventions of plane, computers, the Intenet, mobile phones or using smart cards for bank transactions have made our lives easier and more comfortable

• New technologies have also improved our working conditions – harder work is done by robots and directed by computers (pros)

• Cons of that – many people are made redundant and become unemployed

Medicine

Great progress has been made in medicine

Many new drugs have been invented – enables to cure many incurable illnesses and prolong peoples lives

New medical equipment – like laser used in surgery is more efficient and shortens the time a person has to spend in hospital

Food industry

• Has also been influenced by scientific advances• It results in genetic engineering used to produce

more and more grains, fruits or vegetables.

• In the past people used to think it´s a good idea, but nowadays they are afraid of side effects of genetically modified food

Misuse of science and technology• One of the greatest misuses of science is its use

for purpose of war. It has produced weapons like atoms bombs, rockets and inter-continental ballistic missiles.

• The use of these weapons in any future will cause a great massacre. Indeed, the entire civilization will be destroyed.

• Medicine is misused at sports. Many forbidden drugs are used as doping for sportsmen

New technologies at home

• Our households are equipped with many modern aplliances – fridges, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, dishwashers, microwaves or computers.

• Why do we use them?• What are these appliances used for?- a kettle, microwave, fridge and freezer, • What is the most important invention in your

opinion? Why,

Questions:

• What do you think will be the greatest discovery of the 21st century?

• Do you think time travelling will be discovered? Would you travel to the past? Why?

• Try to imagine your life without electricity. Do you think you would manage it? What would you do?

• Would you like to be taught at home by a computer? Would you miss st?

• Imagine what will schools in the future look like.
