    What is Community?

    Global Community Local Community

It is used in both our common, everyday language and also by professionals, politicians and

corporations. We frequently hear about "community care", "community revitalization",

"community service" and many other references to community. Yet, while everyone seems

to have a fairly common understanding of what is meant by "community" it eludes a clear

    and comprehensive definition.

The word "community" is derived from Latin and has been used in the English language since the 14th

century. It refers to both the development of a social grouping and also the nature of the relationship

    among the members.

The term is most often associated with one or more of the following characteristics:

    common people, as distinguished from those of rank or authority;

    a relatively small society

    the people of a district;

the quality of holding something in commona sense of common identity and characteristics.

The concept of community was further developed inthe 19th century to contrast the dynamics and

relationships of residents within a local setting to thatof larger and more complex industrial societies. It is

related to the terms commune (French) and Gemeinshaft  (German), in terms of denoting particular

kind of relationships. Relationships within a communitywere thought to be more direct, holistic and significantthan the more formal and abstract relationships with

    the larger society.

Today, three main types of communities are usually identified:

    1. Geographic communities share

    physical space, so that residents

come into contact with each other

by virtue of proximity, rather than

intent. However, to be a "real"community, residents must feel a

sense of belonging and hold at

least some values and symbols in

    common.

For example, a feature of the natural landscape, such as a river, that is important to

many, or a local claim to fame; such as an internationally known theatre company. In

geographic communities how power is distributed has a significant impact on how the

    community develops.

    2. Communities of interest are sometimes referred

to as "communities within communities". Members

of these communities choose to associate with

each on the basis of a common interest or shared

concerns. Sometimes communities are formed by

self-identified members of a reference group based

on characteristics outside of their control, e.g. a

disability, ethnic group, or low income, which give

them a sense of common identity and shared

    concerns.

    3. Virtual Communities are groups

    of people that primarily interact

    via communication media rather

than face to face. If themechanism is a computer

network, it is called an online

    community . Online communities

    are "social aggregations that

emerge from the Net when people

carry on those public discussionslong enough, with sufficient

human feeling, to form webs of

    personal relationships".

    Communities can be healthy or

    unhealthy, with most being

somewhere in the middle. In an

    unhealthy community there may

    be an environmental disaster, such

as the contamination of the water

supply, a high level of poverty due

to a major industry closing, or

    entrenched conflict over a divisive

    community issue.

    The path to becoming a

    healthy community starts

    with broad community

    engagement, leadership,

    the development of a

    shared vision and

    community goals,

    effective planning, local

    government commitment

    and collaborative use of

Today online communities as we know it has

became a huge way of communicating with

others. In the 1970s when the Internet was

created by ARPAnet E-Mail was created.Although, basic E-Mail allowed for user

interaction as one could send and recieve

messages. “Message Boards” were soon built

into email or websites allowing for others to

create a string of content that others can

respond to. Message boards are quite common

even today allowing for a user to interact with

others on one topic. Interactions are in the form

of message strings that other users are also able

    to see.

Internet Relay Chat (IRC)developed in 1988 by Jarkko Okarinen

was one of the early Instant

Messengers. Popular in the 90’s InstantMessaging started to occur. Both users

had to be online; and could send each

other short messages instantly. This later

    emerged into AOL Instant Messenger,

    and Windows Live Messenger.

    Today online communities are built

off of the innovations that we had in

the past. Users that are participatingin communities have increased

steadily in recent years. Back in a

2001 Pew Internet & American Life

    Project report, 84% of all

    Internet users indicated that they

contacted an online community and79% identified at least one

    group with which they maintained

regular online contact. Due to user

    increases many communities have

sprung up in recent years that may

    relate to user interest, health,

    shopping and even travel.

Sites like TripAdvisor are an example of an online community where users are able to post

photos, comments, and links about a particular place. People who do post about their

experiences get responses from a manager or other appointed user. There are also interest

communities such as WebMD a community relating to health and wellness. Users are able

to get health advice, and learn about news and other resources available to them.

Facebook and Twitter today are two types of platforms that allow users to customize a profile

and communicate with others. Facebook has incorporated many great features that were

popular in the past into its site. Users can instant message; email and make their Facebook

unique with a profile picture (avatar).Twitter allows for an avatar and almost encompasses a

forum feature but instead lets users write a post on a news feed of 120 characters.

Online communities today would be drastically different if it were not for many of the

previous developments on the web with features such as email, forums, and instant

    messaging.

    ‘online community & Social Media

’ are that it refers to a wide range of online activities. In this class we use the term ‘online community & Social Media’ broadly to refer to all

communities that exist predominantly online, but we acknowledge online communities
