Amer 2 ABSTRACT: This paper details the design p rocess of developing new c onstruction materials based on lessens learned from the technology of d esigning Very High Strength Concrete (VHSC). Th e paper shows f irst the design process of developing the VHSC and secondly highlighting the design process of the new construction materials. This leads to devel oping cult ural stones that have extende d proper ties inc luding dampi ng soun d, resisti bility to imp act, as well as  being light weight and energy efficient. The research also factors in cost effectiveness as a vital part in creating an ideal product. The new design shows considerable challenges in the material development such as void elimination, strength requirements, color stability, natural textures, high durability and resistance to impact loads. The research focuses on developing the mix design b y caref ul material selection. In the development of the VHSC, attention was focused on the compressive strength while fibers added to improve the tensile strength. Therefore, this paper addresses the development of VHST and its response to addition of fibers to improve the tension. Void elimination was the major factor in the design mix in VHSC. The least void was obtainable with the most appropriate proportion, size and type of the ingredient forming the new construction materials. The insulation feature of the new material uses a two-layered system, which is made of recycled waste materials in its back layer. The stone was tested to evaluate the essential properties such as heat conduction, impact resistance, water absorption and durability. 1 Professor and Chair, Civil and Architectural Engineering Department, North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro NC 27411, USA 2 Graduate Student, Civil and Architectural Engineering Department
