Why LCA work in EFEMA?
Food product represents 30% of human induced GHGs
Pressure from customers, retail and consumers
(e.g. concern about impacts associated with palm oil)
Need to establish leveled playing field
Compared to other - more focus on methodology (less
on results)
Collaboration instead of possible ‘unfair’ competition
Technical Committee, Brussels, 14 November 2011
Scope of work
Develop LCA and CF methodology
Inspiration from IDFs Carbon Footprint
Guideline but with focus on ‘all’ impact
categories (hence LCA & CF)
First version to be ‘simple’ and in ‘alignment
with the PEF (European Product
Environmental Footprint Guideline)

Challanges: The four phases of LCA
Technical Committee, Brussels, 14 November 2011
Phase 1 and 2 (questions)
Phase 1: Goal and Scope
How should the functional unit be defined?
Scope, boundaries and level of detail?
Requirements data quality and database?
Phase 2: Inventory
How to handle co-product allocation?
What data to use for key raw materials (vegetable oils)
How to model emission from electricity use?
Technical Committee, Brussels, 14 November 2011
Why data matters
Carbon footprint of palm oil
Ecoinvent (database): 1.6 kg CO2e per kg palm oil
Ecoinvent (database): 2.8 kg CO2e per kg palm kernel oil
Schmidt (2011): 3.6 kg CO2e per kg palm oil
Schmidt (2011): 7.0 kg CO2e per kg palm oil (incl ILUC)
Pick a number..
Technical Committee, Brussels, 14 November 2011
Data for vegetable oils
Data for Palm-, Rapeseed-, Sunflower and Soy oil will be
based on the best available data
Intention is to use a RSPO funded LCA project of the
major vegetable oils, carried out by 2.-0 LCA
Consultants. The study is not completed yet, but will
most likely be available medio 2013.
Technical Committee, Brussels, 14 November 2011
Phase 3 and 4
Phase 3: Life Cycle Impact Assessment
What LCIA model to use for Carbon Footprinting?
What LCIA model to use for multiple issue assessment (LCA)?
Phase 4: Interpretation
How to communicate results?
How to address uncertainty?
How to address limitations of the study?
External verification?
