COAL: Epitomizes Energy in India

Coal is the main source of energy in India and meets about 53% of its energy requirement. With reserve of over 299 BT coal is expected to provide energy security in future.

India is the 3rd largest producer of coal in the world. Methane emissions from Indian Coal Mining sector is about 1 Billion Cubic Meter (United States Environmental Protection Agency-USEPA).

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas. Its mitigation and gainful utilization will be beneficial for mine safety, environment protection and additional source of clean energy.

Ministry of Coal, Govt of India has taken steps for clean coal initiative and development of coal based non conventional energy resources is being pursued at national and international level.

India is one of the founder member countries of Global Methane Initiative (GMI, erstwhile Methane to Markets), an international initiative taken by USEPA aiming on advancing cost effective methane capture and its use as a clean energy source.

Development of coal based non conventional energy resources: CMPDI’s foray

CMPDI, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL-largest coal producing company in the world), is a multidisciplinary consultancy organization in the field of coal and related natural resources management.

CMPDI is providing services for over three decades in the field of integrated exploration, master planning of coalfields, mine planning & design, engineering, coal preparation, environmental management, laboratory analysis, remote sensing and pursuing Research & Development activities.

Development of clean coal technology in CIL is a priority area. CMPDI, on behalf of CIL, is playing an important role to ensure low carbon path by way of:

► Pursuing development of coal based non-conventional energy resource viz; CBM/CMM/VAM/AMM and UCG etc.

» Commercial development of CBM on behalf of CIL

» Commercial development of CMM in CIL mining areas

» Development of other resources like UCG, Shale gas etc.

► Being Nodal agency on behalf of Ministry of Coal for CMM development in India

► Implementing several national/international research projects in the field of development of CBM/CMM/Shale Gas etc.

India CMM/CBM Clearinghouse: Promoting development of CMM in India

The CMM/CBM Clearinghouse was established at CMPDI, Ranchi in November, 2008 under the aegis of Ministry of Coal, Govt. of India and USEPA initially for a period of 3 years, which has been further extended for another 3 years with an aim to contribute to the development of CMM/CBM. The clearinghouse is functioning with the following objectives:

► Promote CBM/CMM industry in India.

► To be public face of CBM/CMM industry in India through its communication and outreach efforts.

► Initial point of contact for foreign & domestic investors.

About the Workshop:To disseminate information on the development of CBM/CMM resources in India and to showcase the opportunities existing in the field of development of CBM, CMM, VAM, etc., an International Workshop on “Development of coal based non conventional energy resources in India” is being organized by CMPDI and India CMM/CBM Clearinghouse on 12th -13th November 2013 at Ranchi (Jharkhand) India.

The Workshop will be attended by top government officials, technical experts, CBM project operators, scholars and academicians, research organizations in the related field and will feature deliberations on policy issues, emerging technologies, operational situation, research trends, opportunities and challenges.

The workshop will

• Focusontheemergingenergytrendsatdomesticandglobal front.

• PromotedevelopmentofCBM/CMMasacleanenergyfuel.

• Provideaplatformfor interactionbetweennational/internationalexperts,policymakers,projectoperators inthefield of coal based unconventional energy resources.

Host City : Ranchi

Ranchi, a vibrant city bestowed with natural waterfalls and lakes amid lush green vegetation is the capital of tribal dominated mineral rich Jharkhand state of India. It has a pleasant climate round the year with the best time to visit during September to November. It is situated at an altitude of 630 m above sea level and experiences an annual rainfall of around 1100 mm.

Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) at Ranchi is well connected by daily flights from India’s metropolitan cities: Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. Ranchi is also well-connected with major Indian cities through a network of road and railways.
