Business Needs The Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO) is a development bank that invests in companies and financial institutions in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. FMO provides loans, guarantees, and other products and services with the goal of contributing to sustainable growth and alleviating poverty. The bank’s investment professionals need frequent access to updated data about its activities in those markets. “Employees need to investigate what FMO is doing in Africa, for example, when they’re researching that market and meeting with potential clients and investors,” says Rolf Daalder, Director of ICT at FMO. “It was complicated to compare finance information with marketing information. There was no integrated view.” Additionally, the FMO IT department wanted to improve the process of providing business intelligence data to the bank’s finance department. Daalder says, “All departments need updated reports every morning when they arrive in the office. But it was too time-consuming to extract the data from different systems.” FMO also had to address increasing requests for data from regulators. “Auditors require us to provide more and more financial information, faster than ever,” Daalder says. “We wanted to get data to them as quickly as possible. Here also we wanted to improve.” FMO decided it needed a new BI solution that offered better analytical capabilities and faster performance. Development bank FMO invests in more than 80 emerging markets. The bank wanted to speed the delivery of updated financial data to its employees and get reports to regulators faster. To do so, FMO implemented a Microsoft data warehouse and business intelligence (BI) solution. Employees now have a complete view of the bank’s business; reports can be delivered quickly; and the solution can scale to meet business growth.

Business NeedsThe Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO) is a development bank that invests in companies and financial institutions in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Daalder says, “All departments need updated reports every morning when they arrive in the office. But it was too time-consuming to extract the data from different systems.” FMO also had to address increasing requests for data from regulators. “Auditors require us to provide more and more financial information, faster than

ever,” Daalder says. “We wanted to get data to them as quickly as possible. Here also we wanted to improve.”

FMO decided it needed a new BI solution that offered better analytical capabilities and faster performance.

productivity, resulting in shorter time-to-market and lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Info Support also helped FMO deploy the BI Solution on the Microsoft SQL Server Fast Track Data Warehouse, a set of optimized data warehouse reference architectures that includes pretested hardware and data- warehousing best practices. “SQL Server Fast Track Data Warehouse is a preconfigured solution that is easy to implement, and we knew it would improve our warehouse performance,” says Daalder.

The new solution consolidates data from the bank’s five separate databases into a central SQL Server 2008 R2 data warehouse. FMO employees can now access updated data via Microsoft Excel 2010 spreadsheet software for analysis purposes, and they can also take advantage of Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 as a collaborative BI environment. And with Microsoft SQL Server PowerPivot for Microsoft SharePoint 2010, they can analyze data from multiple sources and share and collaborate on results in the SharePoint environment.

FMO employees can now access near-real-time financial data and can analyze that data and create reports with Microsoft SQL Server PowerPivot for Microsoft Excel 2010 and PowerPivot for SharePoint. By the end of 2012, many employees will use the solution every day.

BenefitsWith SQL Server Fast Track Data Warehouse and SQL Server 2008 R2, FMO can give employees a complete picture of its financial activity. FMO can also speed delivery report time and scale to meet future growth.

Gives Employees the Latest Data on Emerging MarketsWith the new consolidated BI solution, FMO employees can quickly view financial data and create analytical reports and publish them to SharePoint Server 2010. “SQL Server 2008 R2 Fast Track Data Warehouse gives us a high-performing solution that provides our employees with a complete picture of our business in other countries, while giving them new, powerful analytical tools,” says Daalder. “They need to see where FMO is investing and who the competitors are in their region. They can

now get visibility into those things by immediately receiving up-to-date data about the market they’re in.”

Speeds Report Delivery Time by Four MonthsFMO can also better meet the growing demands for reports from regulatory agencies. “The performance of our data warehouse has improved, which helps us produce data faster than before,” says Daalder. ”We’re well-prepared to handle the increasing demand for reporting on our financial activities.” In addition, FMO can ensure that its finance department receives reports promptly each morning.

Scales to Meet Future GrowthThe bank also expects to be able to handle business growth more easily because of the solution’s scalability. “With SQL Server Fast Track Data Warehouse, we have the capacity for up to 45 terabytes of data available to us, and that will give us more than enough to scale for at least the next five years,” Daalder says. “It’s a powerful, scalable solution that puts us ahead of our competitors. We can also make better, faster business decisions, and that will contribute to us growing our business.”
