DEVELOPMENT AND HEALTH REVISION
There are several parts to a D+H question, but the
main section is always about the disease you havestudied- Malaria.
The past paper questions give the slight variations inthe wording of this part of the topic, and you areadvised to read them carefully to see how thewording can make a difference to how you shouldtackle it.

The questions are often about the conditions thatallow the disease to be present in an area.
These are of two kinds- human factors and physicalfactors.
Although one or two factors can be classified underboth types, most come under ONE heading only.
BE SURE TO CHECK whether you have been asked
for one, other or both to be discussed in the answer!

You will be asked about the methods of controllingthe spread of Malaria.
Remember that Malaria is a disease with threepartsto its cycle, and to break one part of the cycle is tostop the disease.
So divide your answer into suitable sections to makethe structure easier to see, for both you and themarker! Describe tactics for-
Stopping the mosquito from breeding.
Stopping the parasite surviving in people.
Avoiding the mosquito biting so many people.

You might be asked about the efficiency of thesemethods.
If so, be careful about the methods you have putdown in the earlier part of the answer, as you willneed to have a differentefficiency comment to
make for each point!
So take each point you made in the last slide and tryto say something different about its results.
Those that you cannot say something sensible about, remove from the list altogether!

There are other parts to a D+H question.
They can be about development-
Naming social or economic indicators- which arewhich?
Remember to give the full details of each indicator
that you name; saying FOOD or MEDICAL CAREis not good enough.
Try to name three of each type now.
Describe the indicators used and explain thebenefits of the two complex/ combined indexes-
PQLI and HDI.

You can be asked about why two LEDC countriescan have different levels of development.
It is not asking about things that any country canvary in, like birth control or literacy rates.
It is asking what basic differences some countrieshave that make them able -or less able- to developfaster. They are usually things that cannot beeasily changed.
Try to give five differences now.
