DEVELOPING NORTHERN AUSTRALIA

The growth of Northern Australia will depend on the nation’s success in addressing growing global priorities such as food security, energy security, tropical research, health and bio security.

With the largest population base in Northern Australia, a diverse economy and established commercial viability, Townsville North Queensland is fundamental to making this a reality.

Townsville North Queensland has the capacity to double current population levels without a significant increase in land or services.

Knowledge, education and innovation are intrinsically linked. As one of few developed tropical economies, the region’s tropical expertise and research capabilities uniquely position it to deliver targeted and field-tested products and services to tropical economies around the world.

Investment into the region through new policy initiatives and financial support, in partnership with the community and private enterprise, will build a stronger, fairer and more resilient Australia.

As a Nation, Australia has not just an opportunity but a responsibility to leverage the North’s competitive advantages to satisfy a growing proportion of these strategic requirements.

VISION: “Tropical Commercial and Lifestyle Hub of Northern Australia

Connecting to the World”

EDUCATIONTo position the Townsville North Queensland region as a centre of

excellence for education in the Tropics. From educational institutions, research

and development organisations to educational tourism, support is required to further commercialise this sector for

export domestically and globally.

POPULATIONAll decisions must facilitate an

increased rate of population growth within the region with Local Governments supported

to facilitate basic planning and infrastructure for growth. Liveability of Townsville North Queensland must be enhanced

to support this.

TROPICAL KNOWLEDGE

Endorse the MBD Energy Project through the National Stronger

Regions Fund. The MBD Project is ready to be upscaled and

commercialised following six years of research and investment.

INFRASTRUCTUREProductive infrastructure is the

key fundamental to development of Townsville North Queensland and Northern Australia - roads,

rail, ports, water, energy, telecommunications. Federal

funding allocations must reflect the Northern Australia

development agenda.

ENABLERS FORGROWTH

ENERGYEnergy must become a

comparative advantage for Townsville North Queensland

and more broadly Northern Australia. Cost effective energy supply must be prioritised as a key fundamental of economic

development of Northern Australia.

VISITORSThe introduction by the Federal Government of a short-term waiving (e.g. 4 years) on the additional customs/immigration/quarantine

(CIQ) fee. This will provide Townsville Airport with an improved position

to immediately attract and establish direct Asia-Pacific air services. Federal

Government commitment to growing its Customs and Border Protection services in Townsville in support of international air and sea port services in the medium

to long term is required.

DEFENCETownsville North Queensland

is a key Defence hub and strongly advocates for additional personnel, services, exercises and

infrastructure in the near term. High Range provides immediate

opportunity for better usage.

INVESTMENTThe Federal Government’s 15% infrastructure recycling incentive must be delivered to the regions

in which assets are privatised. Support for dedicated investment officers via Townsville Enterprise

to support Townsville North Queensland is essential.

AGRICULTUREImprovement in the management and usage of Northern Australia’s

world class water assets to support agriculture.

CENTRALTRADE DESK

Townsville North Queensland requires reinstatement of

dedicated Austrade staff and personnel to support industries which sustain Australia’s largest

military presence.
