In accordance with the guidance of the Head of State to fosterhuman resources and to upgrade the fields related to maritimetechnology, Myanmar Maritime University was temporarilyopened in the compound of Myanmar Mercantile Marine College(Institute of Marine Technology), Bayinnaung Road, Sinmalike,Yangon on 1st August 2002On the 1st of December 2003,Myanmar Maritime Universitywas moved to Thilawa,Thanlyin Township,Yangon Division andthe main building wasinaugurated on29th March 2004.

Maritime education and training:Research development programs• Since 2010, research and development programs have been
set up with other international institutions, with increasedparticipation from the industry.
• Delft University of Technology(Netherland) and MMU alreadywork together for the 4 year project of Capacity Developmentfor Integrated Water Resource Management. It covers capacitybuilding, syllabus review and revisions, training equipmentsupport. Technology support started in August 2015.

Maritime Technology Co-operationCenter ( Asia)
• The MTCC-Asia branch office in Myanmar wassuccessfully and impressively launched on November5 2018 in Myanmar Maritime University (MMU),Yangon, which was the latest effort of MTCC-Asia tohave 2nd reach-out on the map of GMN (GlobalMTCC Network), adding another important sub-regional center to the established network in ASEANas MTCC-Asia pushed forward the promotion of GHGemission control and green shipping awareness.
Myanmar Mercantile Marine College
Under the auspices of Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Educationand Ministry of Transport and Communication, Nautical andEngineering courses were conducted initially in 1963 at NavalTraining School, Seikyee. A pilot project for the training ofMerchant Navy personnel was drawn up and the Mercantile MarineTraining School was established on 1st, October,1971. TheInstitute of Marine Technology (IMT) was then solely put underMinistry of Transport and Communication on 15th, March, 1972.On 13th January 2005, IMT obtained new organizational strengthapproved by State Peace and Development Council (S.P.D.C.) onthe resolution of Cabinet meeting 2/2005. Furthermore, ourInstitute has been accredited with ISO 9001:2000 Certification byLloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) and United KingdomAccreditation Service UKAS on 6th July, 2007. With steadycontinual improvements in teaching and training methodologycoupled with advance up to date Deck and Engine RoomSimulators, the Government Cabinet made a decision on 25thMarch, 2009 to upgrade IMT to Myanmar Mercantile MarineCollege (MMMC).

Hons.(Nautical Science) degree from (MMU) or the Diploma inNautical Studies from (MMMC) prior to this Notificationor the candidates who have successfully completed theMercantile Marine Nautical Cadet Training Course from(IMT) and the candidates who haven’t successfullycompleted Written Examination prior to 30th June 2013shall:(A) have following approved seagoing service:• (1) for the candidates from (MMU) have approved
seagoing service of not less than 12 months (haveperformed for Bridge Watch-keeping duty under thesupervision of master or qualified officer not less than6 months) with the approved Training Record Book(TRB).
• (2) for the candidates from (MMMC) have approvedseagoing service of not less than 18 months (haveperformed for Bridge Watch-keeping duty under thesupervision of master or qualified officer not less than6 months) with the approved Training Record Book(TRB).
