WELCOMEDear Colleagues and Speakers

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you on behalf of the Scientific Committee to the 64th Annual and Scientific Meeting of the Irish Gerontological Society in Killarney.

This is a fantastic opportunity for all of us to partake in a stimulating, challenging and ultimately rewarding conference where many issues pertinent to the lives of older people in our communities will be discussed and debated.

It is wonderful that such significant academic endeavour is taking place in Ireland on issues relating to older people in health, social policy, and economic arenas.

We hope that you find the wide-ranging programme of nearly 300 oral presentations and posters stimulating, and that you have an opportunity to share the knowledge that will contribute to the advancement of social and health policy, as well as improving interaction with our older citizens.

What you learn and experience over these few days may give you new ideas about how we promote healthy lives, consider the environments of care, address issues of autonomy, treat physical and mental ill-health and consider particular issues for marginalised groups.

In addition, we hope that you will find ample opportunities for networking and meeting new and familiar colleagues during the coffee and lunch breaks, social activity and while viewing the posters.

We would be very appreciative if you could visit the sponsors’ stands, both as an acknowledgment of industry support, but also because many aspects on display relate to improving life for older people.

I would like to thank the members of the scientific committee, the IGS Executive Committee, the IGS team, Miriam Ahern and Lucette Murray as well as our industry partners, for their contribution in making this event happen, a not inconsiderable task.

WELCOMECuirim fáilte romhaibh go dtí Cill Áirne agus go dtí An Ríocht.

I am delighted to welcome you all to this year’s Irish Gerontological Society Annual and Scientific Meeting. I would like to thank our event associates: University Hospital Limerick Group, University Hospital Kerry, University of Limerick and Institute of Technology Tralee.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome our keynote speakers: Professor Bruce Guthrie, Professor Anne MacFarlane, Professor David Oliver and Patricia Rickard-Clarke.

My sincere thanks also to Professor Peter Kelly and Professor Joseph Harbison for taking time to update us on Stroke and Rehabilitation in Ireland as well as to Dr. Diarmuid O’Shea and Dr. Siobhan Kennelly for their Update on National Clinical Programmes for Older People.

Fantastic research and initiatives are being undertaken in care of the older person in Ireland. This is evident in our broad range of research topics including: dementia, frailty, care-giving, cognition, driving, bone health, falls, capacity, medications and delirium.

I hope that during our conference you take the opportunity to network with the platform and poster presenters, especially if there are opportunities to implement some of the research and initiatives in your own workplace.

The IGS is delighted to welcome the ISPGM annual meeting once again. For the first time, we will host special-interest group symposia, see page 29. I hope that the laying of the foundations of these groups here in Killarney will lead to many constructive and rewarding meetings in the years ahead.

We in the IGS are endorsing the “#hello my name is…” campaign. We have designed special lanyards for our delegates which I hope will be worn with pride. The late Dr. Kate Granger, founder of this campaign, recognised that staff did not introduce themselves to her during her admissions and felt that a very basic step in patient communication was missing. This campaign has been endorsed by a number of healthcare organisations throughout the world. On behalf of the IGS, I strongly encourage you to continue the legacy of Dr. Granger to be compassionate, caring individuals despite the challenges we face in healthcare today and to remember to always say “Hello my name is…...”.

Whether you are a newcomer to the IGS Annual and Scientific Meeting, or a regular delegate, I hope that you thoroughly enjoy this year’s event.

Sincere thanks to members of the local organising committee, the IGS executive committee and specifically to Miriam Ahern and Lucette Murray for making this meeting happen.

Elaine O ConnorHon. SecretaryIrish Gerontological Society
