Chris Harford is on leave and Michelle Parker will take on the role of Deputy Principal for the first 5 weeks of the term. Melanie Arnold will be Wellbeing leader during this time. We are certainly fortunate to have strong leaders who support the leadership of our school and congratulations to them both. We thank Jacqui Knipe who has completed her tenure as ICT coordinator at the end of term 2 and we know she has made a significant difference in managing a complex area in our school. Improvements in communication include Facebook for our school community, developing the ICT committee, supporting the collection of learning data and the management of systems that support this collection. Jacqui will continue to support a variety of projects this term. The year 3 and 4 camp is fast approaching and I know the preparation of teachers in this area has been outstanding. Michelle and I will be attending the camp at various times and we look forward to hearing great stories from our students about this wonderful opportunity and the learning that it has enabled. Congratulations to our choirs and music students who performed in week 9 last term for their families in the Gym! It was such a positive way for students to be involved in an end of term performance and showcase their skills. We are also excited by our Marimba group being chosen to perform at the Festival of music in term 3! These students have worked hard to achieve their goal. We applaud our specialist music teacher Nichole Runge as well as teachers who supported on music night and our choir programs. Second term has ended with written reports to families going home on the last day of term. If you would like to follow up these reports, please make an appointment next term to discuss with your child’s teacher. Students and families have an opportunity to take on feedback and work towards achieving the goal of one year’s growth in learning by the end of the year. We celebrate the work of our amazing School Service Officers on Wednesday this week. Hoanh, Mary, Tracey S, Amy, Peter, Christian, Tracey W, Fiona, Karen, Sara, Christine, Laura, Fiona, Lisa, Louise, Victoria, Bec, Rohan, Emily and Allanah are a dedicated team who support student learning and management of our school. I know you join with me in saying thank you and appreciate the excellent work of this team in our school. TERRIFIC KIDS AWARDS HOPE R (M17)

In many ways Hope fits the “terrific” description as she possesses

many personal qualities that endear her to her classmates and

teachers as well as set the standard when it comes to treating

people in ways that show she genuinely values them.

She focuses on the person and not what they do, demonstrating

an understanding of the fact we have room for improvement and

deserve to be respected and acknowledged for the fact we are all

on a life-long journey of improvement.

Her peers identified these standout qualities in particular:

Her thoughtfulness, especially showing concern for

others and a sensitivity towards their needs that belies

her age

A demonstrably responsible outlook, one based on

honesty and trustworthiness. Hope is always organized

and is truly representative of our “honesty of effort” class

motto

A non-judgmental attitude in genuinely befriending all,

both in and out of the classroom

An attitude of service and caring for others.

As recognized and nominated by the great majority of her peers,

Hope displays all these qualities and as such is most definitely a

deserving winner of the Award.

PHOEBE Z (M17)

Phoebe exudes the qualities that fit the criteria required to be a

Terrific Kids Award winner.

She is an energetic, opinionated and forward-thinking member of

M17, but above all she demonstrates a wonderful sensitivity to

and acceptance of others that serves as an appropriate example

for us all to emulate.

Her peers identified a number of standout qualities in nominating

her for the Award, including:

A genuinely thoughtful approach to helping others in need

as well as an appreciation of the need to stand up for the

rights of others

An enthusiastic approach to dealing with all schooling

demands as well as personal relationship-based

challenges

Respectful behaviours with all, including the modelling of

the need for self-respect, although her teacher may not

fully agree with this criteria considering the ribbing he

sometimes receives from Phoebe for being “follicly

challenged”

Demonstrating true friendship by being an open and

understanding person. Phoebe interacts meaningfully

with all members of the school community, from

mentoring young buddies to leadership.

A student with many positive and personally constructive qualities,

Phoebe is a most deserving recipient of the Kiwanis Terrific Kids

Award.

HAYLEY R (M18) Hayley has been nominated by her peers as a worthy recipient of the Terrific Kids Award for Term 2. She has achieved this by being:

THOUGHTFUL – appreciating her class mates and

helping others at school

ENTHUSIASTIC – enjoys being at school and is

interested in learning

RESPECTFUL – always using good manners and is a

good person

RESPONSIBLE – caring PALS Leader and very

dependable doing school jobs

INCLUSIVE – makes sure she includes others when

working or just hanging out

FRIENDLY – there’s always a smile on her face and

she’s genuinely a happy person

IMPECCABLE – well organized, on time and has neat

bookwork

CARING – shows consideration and concern for

others, and not afraid to ask R U OK?

Hayley has shown resilience this year, overcoming personal challenges and her Terrific Kid qualities have shone brightly this term. Congratulations to Hayley R.

ICAS ASSESSMENTS ICAS Assessments have moved to an online platform in 2019. Tests begin in September week 7, this term. The assessments are based on curricula for the relevant year. Students are asked to demonstrate a deeper, integrated, and thorough level of learning and apply classroom learning in new contexts, using higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills. Assessments for years 2- 7 in Science, English and Mathematics and Digital Technologies, years 3-7, will be offered at Modbury West in 2019. The cost for each test is $14.50. ICAS now has an online direct payment facility for parents; the Parent Payment System. The Parent Payment System is a simple and secure online payment service specifically for parents to purchase ICAS Assessments and make a direct payment to UNSW Global. Parents can access this service by typing unsw.global/parentpay into a browser. Our school's unique access code is 5b87fea090 Online payments are the only payment mode in 2019 and close Wednesday 14 August, week 4.

LOST PROPERTY Lost property is on display near the back door, it will be removed at the end of

Health @ Modbury West with Isaac Radan

Term 2 Recap

Throughout term 2 we continued our work on Nutrition and Healthy Eating

before starting our “Resilience” unit of work. This included looking at famous

people who had not succeeded at first but did not give up on their dreams. We

also looked at how we have all “failed” and learnt something throughout our

lives due to being resilient. This also tied into our mental health and mindfulness

work completed during term 2.

Term 3 We have already started our “Health Benefits of Sport and Physical Activity”

where we are looking into the history of sports but this is where we will start off

again for the new term. Following this is our unit on the human body where we

will look at our bones and body, the heart and the cardiovascular system,

cardiovascular disease, the digestive system, and the immune system. We have

another big term upon us but I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing

holiday!

Just a reminder When Students come to health lessons, please make sure to bring your pens,

pencils, utensils etc. as we may be moving to different rooms throughout the

week. I will have the workbooks for all students and will bring them along with

me to each lesson. We will continue to have a fantastic year together!

Last but not least Please do not hesitate

to contact me if you

have any questions,

concerns or ideas

throughout the year.

Thank you,

Isaac Radan

Please ensure your child is

dressed appropriately for

PE lessons. Slip on shoes

etc make it challenging for

students to fully

participate. Thank you for your support.

Turn over for the

2019 Whole School

PE Program. Please

note – subject to

change throughout

the year.

Mrs Andrea Panozzo! For Weeks 1-5 this Term, Mrs Panozzo will be teaching PE as Miss

Arnold supports our school as the Wellbeing Leader. Please

make her feel welcome!

Lost & Found

Although students are

reminded to collect their

belongings, at the end of

every week there is often

a collection of hats,

jumpers and drink bottles

in the Gym.

If these items have names,

they will be returned;

otherwise they will be put

in the lost property bin

near the front office.

Thank you

Play at Lunchtimes (PALs) is a

buddy initiative aimed at

engaging our students in play

and activities during

Lunchtimes. Our successful

Year 7 PALs Leaders went

through an application

process to be selected. They

were then involved in a

Mentoring Day where they

learnt the importance of

mentoring, leadership and

how to be role models of our

school. Our leaders named

the days ‘Monday Funday’

and

Fabulous Friday’.

They have been a huge hit

during Term 1 and Term 2 and

we are predicting an even

bigger Term 3!
