Take your child’s education“Outside the Box” with Hewitt . . .

Balance Character, Academics, Work, and ServiceAcademics are only one important aspect of your children’s education.Strong moral character, self-discipline, and good manners will producea person others enjoy being with. A strong work ethic and a servant’sheart help provide balance.

Personalize Your Home EducationJust because your child is eight, it doesn’t mean he or she will fitinto a third-grade box. Consider your student’s skills, not chrono-logical age. Challenge his/her mind, but enable your child to suc-ceed. What are your student’s interests? A packaged “grade-three”curriculum doesn’t take any of these into consideration.

Encourage Home School, Not School at HomeFirsthand experiences will excite your student’s desire for learning.

Great literature will help mature reasoning and understanding. Manyparents switch to Hewitt because they have been burned out by an

overly-structured academic curriculum. If you and your children arenot enjoying your homeschooling, you need to make some changes.

Develop a Mind for a Lifetime of UseStudents achieve excellence through a combination of

enthusiasm, hard work, and the use of superior resources. Youcan create enthusiastic students by praising specific skills and

encouraging them to do their best even at a young age. Hewittoffers a balanced, flexible, and complete approach to home-

schooling. A lifelong, whole-hearted learner will be your result.

Multi-Grade TeachingAs a busy home-schooling mom and dad, you don’t want to hinder your children’s education by buryingthem under a pile of workbooks. At the same time, especially if you have several children, you do not havethe time to teach every subject on each grade level. What can you do?

Some subjects will require teaching on an individual level. Phonics and beginning reading cannot beignored. Mathematical concepts need to be learned when a child is able to understand the concepts and already knows the facts needed for that operation. Obviously, you cannot teach your seven-year-old beginning algebra along with your ninth-grader. But you can let older children help teach skills they havealready mastered. What better way of reviewing? Not only will you have more time, less stress, and morefun, but the children will learn to work together and appreciate each other’s uniqueness.

In the book, Home School: Taking the First Step, Borg Henderickson lists five keys to successful home-schooling teaching.

NATURALNESS: Let interactions come naturally. PATIENCE: Learning takes time. FLEXIBILITY: Be willing to make changes. PARTICIPATION: You must become involved in the learning activities of your child. FAITH: Have faith in yourself. When needed, seek help, support, and counsel from your spouse, a fellow

home-schooling parent, a support group, a friend, and from God.

As a home-schooling parent you are free to use strategies for teaching your children that public schoolteachers cannot use. “Train up a child in the way he should go. . .” involves getting to know yourchildren so you know their ways. Adapt ideas to your children and your situation. As youchoose the teaching style best for you and your children, consider:

1. Teach things in context. Relate lessons learned to the big picture as much aspossible. For example, “What good are fractions?” You can use them tomeasure a board you are cutting, a cake you are baking, cutting a pie, orsewing a shirt.

2. Base curriculum on each student’s ability, not on his or her “grade” level orage.

3. Have a schedule, but don’t feel locked into it. Don’t stop in the middle of adiscussion or project because it’s “time to move on.”

4. Work toward developing intrinsic motivation as soon as possible in yourstudents.

5. Encourage students to be independent learners, able to initiate learningwithout you. If you get called away to another task, they should be ableto continue learning on their own (rather than waiting for you to return).

6. Teach them how to evaluate their own work, taking pleasure in a job well done, rather than looking for that “A.”

7. Avoid being a watch dog. Trust your children to use their time wisely, untilproven wrong. Allow them unscheduled time for their own pursuits.

**You will need to provide your own math program at appropriate grade level.

Hewitt’s Early-Grade Unit ProgramsWe designed supplements to our elementary programs so they could be adapted to multi-grade teaching. Starting with our Preschool Plus program you simply read aloud to your student(s), asking questions, and doing fun projects. For Kindergarten inTell Me A Story, we emphasize Bible. First Grade is covered by studying animals (Science)—a favorite for all children—in A BeeSees. For second grade we go Across America (History/Geography). Your child gets a firm foundation in Bible, Science, and His-tory/Geography—all using simple programs with daily schedules that build the relationship between parent and child. You’llnever regret the bonds that are formed in these early years—as one of our teachers says, “Now is the time for your child.”

A Unit-Study Resource from Hewitt

The Joy of DiscoveryHow to Teach with Unit StudiesBarbara Wagner’s innovative approach sets you free from thelimitations of someone else's idea of what you should study. At

the same time, you are tethered to a scope and sequence sothat you don't miss important concepts

along the way. Includessamples of unit studies

launched from a child's ques-tions, the hierarchy of Blooms'thinking skills, ways to under-

stand and utilize your child's learningstyle, reproducibleforms for recordingand evaluating your

student's learning, and a Dial-A-Unit wheel whichhelps assure that all levels of learning skills are used.

Use as a complete curriculum or as a supplement. In a3-ring binder, 92 pages. (Gr. K–8)

Learning Objectives for Grades K–8We’ve separated the Learning Objectives from our Home Education Guide

and designed them to track up to three students’ mastery of eachconcept. Skills are divided into language arts, math, his-tory and geography (including map skills), and science;

also includes art, music, and character development. Alllists have been compared with recognized standards to

ensure that students will not be surprised on standardizedachievement tests, including Hewitt’s PASS Test (see p. 20).

Three-ring binder, 71 pages.

We've also packaged these two Hewitt publications, which work hand-in-hand, into one binder for your convenience and savings.

The unit study gives you and your students an opportunity to explore more advanced and compli-cated subjects than are available in traditional grade-level studies. It provides the climate for thestudent to advance at an individual pace using his or her preferred learning style. While providingan atmosphere for meeting all school objectives, the unit method is flexible and provides a way foryou to integrate grade levels. You can provide a balanced education for the whole person: mental, physical, spiritual, and social.

Children can acquire an abundant wealth of knowledge while exploring their areas of interest.Research, exploration, creativity, and freedom from bookwork has the potential of

impacting the student so much more than filling in the blanks of someone else’s ideas.Besides, it is more fun to write meaningful reports and letters.

In a unit study most subjects are integrated around a main topic from a contentsubject such as Bible, science, or history. Language arts, handwriting skills, spelling skills, math skills are all integrated into the pursuit of the main topic. (Fora child with immature skills, however, drill is not omitted. Rather, the unit method

presents the practical use of skills and motivates the student to greater mastery.)

Choose a science or social studies topic from your student’s objectives or follow a topicthat has piqued interest. List the areas to cover, an introductory activity, skills to learn,

and a culminating activity. A book, field trip, or resource visit are effective “kick-off” learning experiences.

Plan early for your culminating activity. Serve a dinner based on amenu from the land you study, perform a skit, or visit a related

historical site. Thanksgiving or Christmas programs, or a display/presentation to a home-school support group pro-

vide exciting endings to a study. If the objectives cannotbe met from the unit study itself, fill in with textbookstudies, emphasizing they are reference materials.

The activities in the following unit study on plants couldtake a week to ten days or longer. Remain flexible, adjusting

as you go, as long as goals are being met and interest remainshigh.

Sample Unit Study on PlantsBIBLE: Read about when plants were created in relation to the rest of creation. Look up texts in theBible that mention plants. Apply spiritual lessons.

HISTORY/SOCIAL STUDIES: On a map, draw or paste pictures of plants showing where they grow. Studyhow weather affects plants.

SCIENCE: Learn about the parts of a plant. Take a nature walk to recognize parts of real, living plants.Discuss the function of each part. Look for different types of flowers or make a leaf collection. Watchbees pollinating flowers. Study photosynthesis and about how plants make their food. Do germina-tion experiments. Collect different types of seeds. Try to find seeds which travel in different ways.

READING: Use resource information and materials for reading experience; add outside reading.

SPELLING: Learn to spell words relating to plants.

LANGUAGE AND HANDWRITING: Write out a favorite text dealing with plants. Write or dictatea description of a bee in a flower. Make a booklet with pictures or samples telling abouthow seeds travel. Make a day-by-day report of the germination experiment.

HEALTH: Draw a diagram of a typical plant on a large piece of paper. Place pictures offoods we eat near where they grow on the plant and connect them to it with a line or yarn. For example, cauliflower (flowers); spinach (leaves); celery (stem); apples (fruit); peas (seeds);carrots (roots).

MATH: Count petals on flowers. Compare different kinds of plants. Measuredaily plant growth; graph it. Find out how many gallons of water a treeuses in a day or how many years it takes to grow a good shade tree.Look in a nursery catalog and plan a garden with a set amount ofmoney to spend. Count seeds in a seed pod and number of podson the plant.

ART: Make a seed picture by gluing different colored seeds in apattern on heavy paper. Paint a picture of a bouquet of flowers.Make crayon rubbings by placing leaves bottom side up under apaper and rubbing the side of a crayon over the paper. Start aflower collection.

jar of dry sand. Add water and weigh again.r Experiment with air: Blow up a balloon, blow

bubbles, blow air into cheeks, blow through astraw into water.

r Experiment to test the lifting strength of air pressure: Secure three or four books with rubberbands and place them on top of a balloon. Placethe balloon so that the mouthpiece overhangsthe edge of the table. Take a deep breath andblow steadily into the balloon. See if you can lift more books than your friend.

Chickens Aren’tthe Only Ones

by Ruth Heller

Week 5 Page 55

Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones is a nonfiction book. That means it’s not aninvented story, but tells you information. Nonfiction bookshave a main idea then give examples to show you that mainidea is true. For example, Ms. Heller tells us that all otherbirds lay eggs too. List three more examples Ms. Hellergives to show us not only chickens lay eggs.

Grammar and MechanicsToday, have your child choose five to ten words toput in their dictionary pages. They can be wordsfrom their reading, from daily life, etc. For extrachallenge, aim for ten words and require that oneor more be from their reading, preferably wordsthey weren’t familiar with before the book.

Turn to the Alphabet Page. This week you will doan alphabet of birds. Work with your child tocome up with your own first, without any help.Once you’ve filled in what letters you can, feelfree to go online (together), etc. Some will beunfamiliar to your child, but one purpose of theseexercises is to expand vocabulary. Here is a list ifyou get stuck on any letters:

What’s your favorite bird?

Before you read this book, did you know all these

animals laid eggs? If not, which ones didn’t you

know about before?

Is a spider an insect? (no) What does this book

tell you that lets you know that? (Insects have six

legs, but spiders have eight legs.)

If almost every mammal does not lay eggs, why do

you think the spiny anteater and duckbill platypus

are called mammals even though they do lay eggs?(Don’t expect your child to get this right—it’s more topromote thinking. The short answer is that they meet allthe other criteria for mammals.)

CompositionYour child will write the rough draft of their paper on scratch paper or on a computerrather than in the composition book. Focus on the content. Talk together about how thesentences should sound. Be sure your child says them aloud and you are both happy withthem before writing any down (but don’t do too much correction—you want these to beyour child’s sentences, not yours). Strive for clarity, and worry less about perfect sentencestructure or word choice which will come later. If your child is writing the sentences, rather than dictating them to you, don’t worry about any spelling mistakes made.

Grammar and MechanicsThis week I introduce two topics: alphabetical order and sentence structure. Most childrenpick up the idea of alphabetical order fairly quickly (though it’s common for children at thisage—and older—to mentally run through the alphabet to find out if M is before or after L,etc.—so don’t let that worry you). The important thing about alphabetical order here is notto automatically know where each letter falls in the alphabet, but to understand you start withthe first letter of the word, then if they’re the same you look at the second letter, etc.

Sentence structure, on the other hand, is a complex subject that the dedicated grammar studentcould still be working on in college. Here I’m only concerned with a gentle introduction, free of technical terms. (The idea of subject and predicate was introduced in Grade 1, and Iteach on it again in this guide.) But for this lesson, I’m simply imparting the idea that wordorder in English matters. (This can be especially challenging for students who have adifferent language as their first language, because many languages have much looser rules forword order, having other ways to impart the necessary meanings.)

MondayLiteratureRead Max’s Words with your child, ask the following questions, and record the responsesin the space to the right:

What does Max’s brother Benjamin collect?(stamps)

What does Max’s brother Karl collect? (coins)

Can you name at least three types of words that

Max collects? (Any three or more of the following:small words, bigger words, words that make him feelgood, things he likes to eat, words spoken to him, favoritecolors, and words he did not know.)

Max puts his words together and gets what?(There are two correct answers: a thought (sentence) and astory.)

What is Max’s story about? (It is about a worm whowishes he were a snake.)

Choose one noun from yesterday. Write a sentence using the noun

and two adjectives that describe it.

1. They sat by the large, warm fire.2. Anna thought Caleb was homely

and plain when he was born.

3. The old housekeeper was round and slow.4. Sarah loved the blue, grey, and green sea.

5. The gentle, loving dog nuzzled her hand.

Grammar and MechanicsToday I introduce adjectives.

What are the children worried about at the end of this

chapter? (They are worried that Sarah will miss the sea toomuch and won’t want to stay with them.)

Chapter 3

1. They sat by the large, warm fire.

2. Anna thought Caleb was homely and plain when he was born.

3. The old housekeeper was round and slow.

4. Sarah loved the blue, grey, and green sea.

5. The gentle, loving dog nuzzled her hand.

CompositionToday, the student needs to go to whatever place they plan to describe. Today’s note-taking focus isnouns. What does the child see, hear, feel, or smell in the location? (Taste is not likely to come intoplay, but if it does that’s fine.) They should list as many nouns as they possibly can from the place. This is similar to brainstorming. There should be no editing, no holding back. Later the student willchoose which of these nouns to include in the final paper and which to discard. The student shouldwrite each noun on its own line (whether on paper or on computer); this will help with tomorrow’sactivity.

Once the student thinks they are done, look at the list. If you feel the list is thin and notice manythings missing, try to give hints rather than simply adding to the list yourself. Is the student doingwell at what they can see, but less well paying attention to the other senses? Or maybe they’re goodat focusing on what’s near them but not looking into the distance. Maybe they notice the beautifulthings around them but not the plain or ugly ones.

The focus of today’s work is observation, creative flow (as opposed to making judgments andediting—important parts of writing we will explore later), and reinforcing the concept of a noun.

Answers to Workbook Pages

Reinforce the concept by looking through the first three chapters together for more

adjectives.

Students must also choose one

noun from their Day One

worksheet and write a sentence

with that noun and two adjectives

that describe it.

The Winston

GrammarProgram

by Paul Erwin

Using these materials in a multisensory approach, studentscan understand the structure of language and comprehendthe principles of traditional grammar. They are suitable forelementary students through high school, including stu-dents with learning disorders.

Central to this program is the use of manipulatives—cluecards printed in different colors, each representing a part ofspeech. Side One of each card names the part of speech, gives the symbol or abbreviation for it, and in some casesshows its function. Side Two provides clues for identifyingthe part of speech within a sentence. Students see and heara sentence, examine clue cards, and consider oral prompts inorder to create a horizontal pattern of color-coded clue cardsthat identify each part of speech in the sentence. They trans-fer this to a worksheet using symbols and abbreviations.

BASIC LEVEL—Covers the parts of speech, noun functions, prepositional phrases, and principles of modification. Theteacher’s manual is completely scripted to help parents ex-plain the principles of each new skill learned, as well as con-taining answers to each worksheet. The Set includesTeacher’s Manual, Student Workbook, and Basic Card Set.(Grades 3+)

BASIC WINSTON GRAMMAR WORKBOOK II—If after fin-ishing the Basic Level your student needs additional practicebefore beginning the Advanced Program (for Grades 9+),this new set will work well. The workbook contains 30 pagesof additional practice using sentences centered around U.S.geography. Use the cards from your basic set. The set in-cludes the Teacher’s Manual (answers) and Student Work-book. (Grades 5+)

PASS® Testing for Grades 3–8

The PASS® was designed for parents to administer at home, greatlyreducing the stress level of testing. The PASS® is untimed, which helps students to relax.

Students can test within the range of their abilities in each subject. On most achievement tests, where the difficulty of the items variesgreatly, students are frequently presented with items that are ei-ther too easy or too hard, creating problems in assessing academicachievement.Testing results show overall achievement as well as performance in

reading, math, and language. Home-schooling parents will appre-ciate the suggestions given for reaching the goals in each of theseareas. The test is standardized and children’s scores are compared with

both national and home-schooling populations, meaning thescores are equated to those of public-school studentstaking one of the nationally-normed tests.

WHAT IS IT?The PASS® Test was de-veloped specifically forhome schoolers. Likeother achievementtests, the PASS® esti-mates student achieve-ment in reading, math, and language. NewYork, North Carolina,Georgia, Washington, and Alaska have ap-proved the PASS® forpurposes of state re-porting. In other statesrequiring test-ing, checkwith yourlocalschooldistrict.

TESTING

SCHEDULEWhile many parentstest only once eachschool year, testingtwice yearly is the mostaccurate measure ofstudent learning. PASS®Tests can be ordered atany time during the

year, but must be at leastsix months apart. Youhave four weeks after re-ceiving the testing mate-rials in which toadminister the test.Once testing materialsare returned to Hewitt, expect to receive the de-tailed analysis withinthree to four weeks.
