The DPS Office of Energy and Sustainability is now accepting applications for the DPS Go Green Challenge. The
program challenges schools to compete and win financial and other incentives while making their school greener
and more sustainable!
Mission
Through hands-on, project based learning, the DPS Go Green Challenge will educate the next generation to
practice sustainability in their homes and communities and become leaders in the green economy. Students
and teachers are encouraged to use school facilities as a basis for innovative programming and serve as a tool
for hands-on lessons that improve student achievement, positively impact the community, and reduce
operating costs.
Overview
The DPS Go Green Challenge (GGC) was launched in Fall 2012 as a voluntary opportunity for schools to reduce
their energy costs and share in the savings. Last year 47 schools completed over 800 greening projects – saving DPS $500,000 in
utility costs and earning $30,000 in awards and prizes for schools. Over 3 years the program has saved over $1,200,000 and
awarded $95,000 back to schools. Recognizing that going green is more than just energy conservation, this year the DPS Go
Green Challenge continues to include projects on water conservation, recycling, and gardening.
Benefits
In addition to providing a great framework for engaging students in green and sustainable projects, benefits of participation this
year include:
Cash Awards for saving energy and water
Eligibility for $500 teacher grants from the Bosch Community Fund

DPS Go Green Challenge Structure Details
Challenge Structure The DPS Go Green Challenge (GGC) is comprised of 4 Stages and an Innovation category for a total of 30 possible
points. All schools may earn up to 30 points and all schools are in friendly competition in one category.
Submissions for Points Challenge projects are issued prior to the start of each Stage to allow green teams time to plan and prepare. You
must submit projects for points within each Stage – late submissions will not be accepted. At least one week
after the end of each Stage is available to submit projects. Due dates are below; please submit projects
electronically to [email protected] or give them to your AmeriCorps Green School Coordinators.
A word on Sustainability Patrols and the Energy, Water, and Recycling Awards Teams earn monetary awards from DPS Go Green for energy savings, water savings, and can earn additional prizes in the
national Recycle Bowl competition. Sustainability Patrols (detailed on page 15) are on-going green team activities that
identify wasted energy and water, evaluate recycling efforts, and identify potential sustainability improvements for the
school. Sustainability patrols earn points AND are the most effective way to reduce energy and water use and win cash
awards for those competitions. They are a part of all 4 Stages and worth a total of 8 possible points.
Adaptation Sustainability Coordinators advising green teams of students with disabilities may adapt projects as they see fit to best
serve the needs of their students. In addition, project materials should be seen as a starting point – if a form or project can
be modified to better impact your school or deepen your students’ experience, please let us know!
Good Luck! Please visit www.dpsgogreen.wordpress.com for more information or contact us with any questions or
feedback at [email protected].

DPS Go Green Partners and Sponsors The DPS Go Green Challenge is supported by numerous partners who help design and support the
DPS Go Green Challenge.
Non Profit Partners:
Green Living Science, originally an off-shoot of Recycle Here!, Detroit’s drop-off
recycling center, began environmental education in the Detroit Public Schools in
2007 and became a separate nonprofit organization in 2011. GLS has taught the
importance of waste reduction, reuse and recycling to 40,000 Detroit students,
giving them the tools to improve their neighborhoods and transform Detroit.
EcoWorks began in 1981 as a nonprofit organization training people in
weatherization, construction, and energy conservation. Over the years our roots
in energy conservation grew to encompass all aspects of sustainable
development. EcoWorks partners with AmeriCorps, a national service program,
to bring passionate people to help support DPS in going green.

AmeriCorps Support
Supporting your work on the GGC is a team of
AmeriCorps Green School Coordinators who
help teachers, administrators, and other staff
integrate green activities into their work and
serve as role models and mentors for youth.
AmeriCorps coordinators commit to a year of
service and range in age from 23 to 70. All are college graduates.
Coordinators have been engineers, architects, teachers, artists,
community organizers, social workers, and more. They share a
passion for teaching and mentoring students and bring a wealth of
experience and expertise in sustainability. Coordinators participate
in an intensive two-week training and receive continuing training that prepares them for serving
in school environments, working with youth at different grade levels, and for helping schools
succeed in saving energy and reducing their environmental footprint.
Working With Your AmeriCorps Coordinators Each Go Green School will be assigned two AmeriCorps coordinators; they will contact you in the
middle of September to set up a meeting.
AmeriCorps roles:
Explain the DPS Go Green Challenge structure and projects Communicate about DPS Go Green resources, events, and due dates Promote the Go Green Challenge among students, staff, and parents Help facilitate Go Green projects and lead activities with students Train student green team members to conduct sustainability patrols Help coordinate activities such as parent energy-saving workshops Support delivery of in-class Go Green lessons Lead a high school afterschool program (if applicable) Provide additional support and resources for implementing the Go Green Challenge
School Roles:

Stage 1 - GGC Project - Form Your Green Team – 1 Point
The core of the DPS Go Green Challenge is supporting and empowering
Green Teams of teachers, students, and staff who work at each school.
Beyond DPS, Green Teams are in place in contexts ranging from
successful corporations like IBM and GM to many of the universities that
our students may choose to attend.
Getting the whole school involved in going green starts with
forming a Green Team. If you are a teacher, it might be easiest to start
with your interested students. Green teams tend to work best when they
draw more people into them. Even if your green team starts with just a
teacher and a few students, approach other staff, administrators, and the Facility Manager
(engineer). Schools that save the most energy and water – and win the most awards – work
closely with their Facility Manager and custodial staff.
Please fill out the information below, identify members of your Green Team, and select a
name for your team (e.g. Bennett Bioneers, Davison Green Dragons).

Bosch Community Fund Bosch Energy Science and Technology (BEST)
Grant Program Application
The Bosch Community Fund is a 501(c)3 corporate foundation that provides additional support to our company and its site communities’ charitable and community efforts. We create inventors for life through the provision of grants that provide young people with hands-on learning experiences through STEM and the environment. For the third year, Bosch is supporting the DPS Go Green Challenge by providing twenty (20) $500 grants to teachers that will support projects that align with the activities of their school Green Teams. Submissions related to all aspects of STEM and the environment, not just the Go Green Challenge themes, are encouraged. Applications proposing projects which are already supported by existing GGC partners, such as recycling assemblies or school raised garden beds, may be instead referred to those programs. Applications are due Oct. 16th. Teachers will be awarded GIFT CARDS at the Awards Dinner on November 4th and will be able to immediately begin their projects.

Stage 1 Innovation Opportunity: Green Apple Day of Service
The Green Apple Day of Service, a project of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Center for Green Schools, is a global movement to engage schools and surrounding neighborhoods in sustainability initiatives. This year, Days of Service will be held on (or around) Saturday, Sept. 26th, 2015. Events can be around the 26th and do not have to be exactly on that day. “Green Apple” gives parents, teachers, students, companies and local organizations the opportunity to transform all schools into healthy, safe and productive learning environments through local service projects. To learn more about existing projects you can participate in or create your own, visit the website below. In the past, DPS has participated by restoring greenhouses, planting fruit trees, and more. If you can participate in the Green Apple Day of Service, you can use this event to earn an innovation point by submitting an Innovation Project. Instructions for submitting Innovation Projects can be found at the end of this guide.

Stages 1-4 - GGC Project – Sustainability Patrols
8 possible points
Green Teams that patrol their school are effective at conserving resources and lowering utility costs by reducing or eliminating wasteful practices and promoting environmental stewardship behaviors among the whole school community. There are a number of simple, no-cost actions that green teams can take to reduce the school’s utility costs and save natural resources:
Turning off all unused or unnecessary lights and appliances Using energy-saving power settings on computers, printers, and other electronics Turning off running faucets and reporting leaks to the facility manager Reporting observations about how more energy could be saved – e.g. reducing
hallway lighting when there is adequate daylight, consolidating appliances, etc. Making posters and announcements to promote recycling and conservation Creating and posting reminders to turn off lights and computers Checking to see that recycling is done correctly and educating students and staff
about best-practices
In addition to the resource savings, sustainability patrols are also vehicles for other student
benefits:
Instill a sense of responsibility and ownership Enhance problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills Fostering leadership
Eliminating waste and changing behavior requires on-going efforts from a committed group of people, especially students.
Getting Started
1. RECRUIT a group of students to conduct sustainability patrols. An entire class can be
selected for this responsibility or students may be asked to complete a simple application. Group size could range from about 4 at the lower end to 10-12 as an upper limit.
2. SCHEDULE A FIRST MEETING with your students and your AmeriCorps coordinators, who will present the project to students, provide materials such as student badges and report forms, and train your students in their first sustainability patrol.
3. CONDUCTING PATROLS. Students should patrol as many rooms in the school as
possible (classrooms, offices, gym, cafeteria, etc.). This takes some time, and it is essential that students are respectful of others while patrolling.
16
4. REPORT: Each Patrol should complete a report. It can be the sample provided or a one
created tailored to your school. Turn in four reports to earn a point. You can conduct both Energy and Water Patrols and/or a Recycling Patrols. Schools without a
single-stream recycling program can still conduct recycling patrols as long as they have a
program in place to at least recycle one type of material, such as paper, water bottles, or
electronics. There is a section in both patrols to report other observations and suggestions to
improve your school’s sustainability.
FOR ALL SUSTAINABILITY PATROLS
1. DPS Go Green Challenge Badges should be worn on patrol to give credibility to
students’ work.
2. INFORM teachers and staff that students will be on patrol. An announcement and
possibly a quarter sheet in their mailbox would be a nice courtesy.
3. TURN OFF any sources of energy or water waste – lights, computers, other
appliances, running faucets, etc. If there is the potential that turning something off
will cause harm (e.g. a teacher’s computer), please leave a note that you noticed an
opportunity to save energy, but do not turn off computer or appliance.
4. RECORD the items that are provided on the Patrol Reports – clipboards can be very
useful.
5. COMPLETE four Patrols reports to earn one GGC point.
6. SUSTAIN YOUR PATROLS. Set a regular time each week or day to do patrols. As an incentive, you might require students to complete a few patrols before earning their DPS Go Green badge. Report your patrol results to the school or create a poster to track the number of teachers that are practicing environmental stewardship. Your AmeriCorps Green School Coordinators have door hangers, certificates, and suggestions for numerous activities like creating a PSA that can make your patrols fun, interesting, and effective throughout the whole school year.
Earning Points and Awards Every time you send your Patrol out, they should complete a report. Turn in four reports to earn a point. Sample reports are below but can be adapted to best fit your school. During each stage you can submit Sustainability Patrol Reports to earn GGC points (submit four report forms to earn one point). You can earn 2 points during the Recycling Challenge, 4 during the Energy and Water Challenge, and 2 points in the Gardens/Earth Day Challenges. These points will help you be competitive in the overall Go Green Challenge competition and be successful in the Recycling, Energy, and Water competitions, which also have monetary awards associated with them. If you want to win, we suggest getting started with your Sustainability Patrols right away!
