Who Needs Detectamet Detectable Products?

Within many industries today there is an ever-present risk of product contamination from foreign objects. If these remain undetected, they can result in damage to equipment, costs incurred through product recalls, harm to the company’s reputation and, in the worst case, serious injury to somebody inadvertently coming into contact with the contaminant. These industries include the food industry (human and animal), beverage, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, textiles and many others.

Are You Protecting Your Customers?

Statistics show that the Food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries are most at risk from foreign body contamination issues - due to consumers who may inadvertently ingest foreign matter within a finished product. Consumer complaints are a constant problem for most food companies and so prevention and control should be high on the list of priorities for quality and technical managers with support from product development, purchasing, distribution etc.

The law states that “Food fails to comply with food safety requirements if it is unsafe for human consumption or it is so contaminated (whether by extraneous or otherwise) that is would not be reasonable to expect it to be used for human consumption in that state” Section 8 (2) (B & C) of the Food Safety Act 1990.

It is intended that the more risk-based and flexible procedures will better match the needs of individual businesses and enforcement agencies. This is facilitated by the introduction of food safety management procedures based on the application of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles. HACCP-based principles are widely regarded throughout the EU and in most developed countries as crucial to the management of food safety and, in turn, consumer protection. On 1 January 2006 it became a legal requirement for all food businesses (except primary producers) to put in place, implement and maintain a permanent procedure or procedures based on HACCP principles.

The law allows defences for all reasonable precautions and all due diligence when a company may be faced with a prosecution for a foreign body complaint.

Quality Assurance

Detectamet offer materials and products that have been developed to help industry comply with new global regulations to protect consumers and employees. Detectamet products give manufacturer’s the opportunity to use cost-effective, functional, ergonomic implements that are suitable for use in industrial environments, and approved for food contact use. A key feature of the products manufactured from these materials is that fragments are detected and rejected by standard in-process metal detection and X-Ray equipment. All our products are tested and meet current EU legislation along with other international requirements. Full data sheets, MSDS are available for all our products, and all come with Certificate of Conformity.

How detectable are we?

Detectable products are made from various non metallic materials, those that offer the best capabilities for food applications that cannot always use a metal alternative. These products are often specified by industry in alternative materials as they are most suited to the applications.However, standard non-detectable implements can present serious risk of foreign body product contamination.

Detectamet products are made with a proportion of a metallic magnetic trace element which is present through out the whole object, this is at a size and concentration that allows a homogeneous flow throughout, ensuring that all parts are potentially detectable by metal detection systems but without changing the physical properties of the object. Other products have a metallic strip etc bound to the product.X-Ray machines have an advantage over metal detectors in being able to detect a wider range of foreign bodies - this is because the foreign body must be significantly different from the food or other material in X-Ray density in order to be detected.In practice an X-Ray machine will be able to detect items such as glass, metal, stones, bone and some denser plastics, for example PVC.However, standard plastic films, paper, cardboard, wood, insects, string or fruit stones will not be picked up!Detectamet Super-X (X-Ray visible plastic) has been developed to work in conjunction with metal detection and x-ray detection systems, using an x-ray visible trace element which is present throughout the whole object and increases its density. Therefore allowing detection of foreign body contamination to the end of the production line. Detectamet products are all detectable - but there will be a cut off point. This will not be systematic for all customers and indeed for all machines/lines or sites. There is no 100% guarantee of zero risk with any detectable products.Even metal - have you ever considered why small pieces of metal are able to get into production lines? There will always be a limit as to at what point the Detectamet material (or any detectable material) will stop being detected! If using an X-ray machine, the density of the product you are manufacturing must be less than the foreign object matter.If you are using a metal detector, the cut off point will generally be when the metal content in the object is smaller than the settings you are using. At this point any metal foreign object will pass through your system. Metal detection systems are a safeguard to a point.

Calibration of the metal/x-ray detection system should always be done with care and according to the guidelines of the manufacturer. A test is always recommended before production to determine the detective sensitivity.

Metal detection and X-Ray detection is not a precise science. Machines may be very accurate, high tech and high specification instruments but there are many variable’s to consider:• Type of food or product• Size• Density• Packaging• Type of metal in the contaminant• Speed and orientation of the metal• Detector settings• Sensitivity and age, to name the most common ones! Contrary to the rule - many Detectamet products will be detected in general better within a wet environment rather than dry - but will achieve good results to implement into HACCP for all areas.

Manual inspection should not be forgotten - All detectable products come in bright blue as standard, but are available in a range of high visibility colours not commonly found in food products or our colour coding can be used to identify areas of high risk or shift patterns.

Lost or found?

Ask yourself this important question : By what percentage am I now safeguarding my customers? - If you have a non metal detectable pen you have 100% chance of facing an issue caused by the potential of a lost pen. If you have a Detectamet pen which can detect to a piece as small as 5mm then you have a 95% chance that lost pen will be found. Remember that Detectamet products show that you are using all due diligence, and you have taken the best precautions available.

This report has been compiled as a summary to the samples supplied for testing and to establish the spherical equivalent for the samples in both WET and DRY modes of operation on the detector. Tests carried out: Tests were carried out on a Phantom 350mm x 200mm operating at 150Khz with the Dry Phase set at 90.83 (typical dry set up) and Wet Phase set at 2.19 (typical wet set up) and in both cases the sensitivity has been set to 100.

Explanation

It is probably best to give an example to explain the results above.

Example 1Your customer is running OATS as a product and as a result the detector would run DRY. If your customer is currently working to a sensitivity of 2.0mm Fe he would be able to detect the following:• Small plaster• Big plaster• Large O ring

Example 2Your customer is running CHILLED MEAT as a product and as a result the detector would run WET. If your customer is currently working to a sensitivity of 2.0mm Fe he would be able to detect the following:• Small plaster• Small O Ring• Large O ring

NoteThere is a slight anomaly related to the plasters as we would expect the larger plaster to exhibit larger effects but the reverse is being demonstrated. This we believe is down to the small plaster having two types of additive to make it both X-Ray and metal detectable.

X-Ray Detection Results (Showing Variables)

Here are some of the images of plastic that I tested in our glass line x-ray. The results were very exciting, and quite clear images from the machine. We were able to reliably detect down to a 3mm piece. I have sent this & the presentation you sent through on to the head of quality.

These images were taken at 550 jars per minute on a Quad beam x-ray. I firstly tried the plastic in water, then on the smallest piece I actually had it in the product (Seafood sauce) to really test out the plastic’s limits. Jars are 250 gram of 1.5mm wall thickness.

Product Tests were carried out on our range of Detectable Products. Using our X-Ray equipment at MT Safeline Ltd, we can now advise you of our test results as follows:

The tests were carried out using a Safeline AdvanChek X-Ray System, & the sample X-Ray Visible Plasters were presented on the conveyor belt in their ‘worst case’ orientation which means they would give the least signal level to equate them to a spherical metal test standard.If the plasters are presented differently, or in a way as if they became detached from the wearers hand, then the signal levels can become greater & they may become more easily detected.

3 Flange EarplugThese products gave a detection level equivalent to that of a 1.5mm S/S spherical ball when presented to the X-Ray System in their worst case orientation.This is a good result & these products should be detected in most applications if a detection spec of 1.5mm S/S or smaller is achievable for the customer’s products.

Disposable EarplugThese products gave a detection level equivalent to that of a 2.0mm S/S spherical ball when presented to the X-Ray System in their worst case orientation.This is a good result & these products should be detected in most applications if a detection spec of 2.0mm S/S or smaller is achievable for the customer’s products.

The Detectamet stationery range has been developed for food processing and similar applications. Made from metal detectable X-Ray visible polypropylene materials which are high impact resistant. Test to assess compliance with the current EC food legislation (EN) 1935/2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food and repealing directives. All products come with a certificate of conformity. Migration test reports available on request.All our inks are non toxic, meeting the requirements of ISO12757-2 (The International Organization for Standardization published standards for ball point and roller ball pens). Declarations of conformity can be issued for all products.

Detectable Professional Knife Handles

On the vast majority of the knives included in the Detectamet range, three handle types are available. The Regular Handle - standard, polypropylene metal detectable handle, originally designed for holding the knife safely and comfortably for long periods.

The Ergo handle - polypropylene metal detectable handle, developed for the professional user who uses knives all day, our research and development team worked with various food processing companies to develop this innovative handle, the resulting design provides the following benefits-• Double tapered design, ergonomically designed to reduce stress to hand and wrist• Contoured thumb platform and rounded blade back for added comfort

The Ergo Safety Handle - polypropylene metal detectable handle, this is a hybrid version of the Ergo described above, but it has a much longer finger guard to protect the fingers and reduce the chance of injury.

All handles are insert moulded from metal detectable polypropylene co-polymer.Test to assess compliance with the current EC food legislation (EN) 1935/2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food and repealing directives. All products come with a certificate of conformity. Migration test reports available on request. We recommend that a coding system is used for all Professional Knives in the range to prevent cross-contamination, tainting of food and to seperate production lines in the food industry.

To complement the traditional range of Plain Edge knives, we have introduced the Wavy or Scalloped Cutting Edge. This provides 40% more cutting edge in contact with the product than with a traditional plain edge knife.

Made to the same exacting standards, the Wavy Edge provides the perfect cutting edge profile for cutting items such as bread, gateaux and pastry products. The edge requires no sharpening, so is ideal for fast food outlets, busy canteens and restaurants.

The series of small scallops that make up the blade Edge are ground alternately on each side of the blade by hand with great precision. This ensures that each knife performs perfectly for the longest possible time by retaining a fine, razor sharp cutting edge for far longer than a traditional plain edge knife. The scallops also provide an additional benefit in that air is allowed to enter between the blade and the cut product, enabling the cut slice to fall away from the knife and not stick to it.

The blade Edge is available on any knife, but most popular on the Ham, Beef and Salmon slicer knives.

It should bend from the middle of the blade, not near the handle. Keep pushing the blade so it is at 90 degrees to the handle. Detectamet can manufacture a complete range of precision metal detector test pieces. Each calibrated test piece is colour coded for simple visual verification and fitted with a calibrated and certified bearing to ISO9002 and AFBMA Calibration.

We have developed a range of test products for X-Ray Machines which includes low, medium and high density materials acting as the medium and combining these with test contaminants of varying densities.

With our experience of producing high quality test pieces for metal and X-ray detection in the food and pharmaceutical industries we’ve found it increasingly beneficial to our clients to make information easily available for quality assurance purposes. All Test Pieces are supplied with a full certificate of conformity which we will keep a record of for you for 3 years.

Each Test Piece has a number etched onto its side which relates back to the Certificate of Conformity supplied by the bearing manufacturer. When our Testpieces are purchased from Detectamet our name will also be etched onto the Test Piece - allowing you or any member of staff to trace it back to us. Alternitavley we can add your company name upon request.

From food processing and brewing, through distribution and storage to serving food, installing Detectamet stainless steel equipment brings unique benefits to the food and pharmaceutical industry.

One of the great advantages of the Detectamet stainless steel range is that it imparts no taste to the food/products that is prepared on it. Typical uses include kitchens, dairies, ham curing and fish storage. The grades used by Detectamet are 304, for ambient temperatures and low acid concentrations, and 316 for harsher environments. For example 304 is used in cheese and dairy production, but where salted (ham) products is being prepared 316 is used. In ice cream production /processing 316 is specified because strong anti-bacteriological cleaning and rinsing systems are used. A further advantage is that stainless steel is resistant to damage caused by condensation cycles in high humidity areas such as kitchens etc. The Detectamet range also incorporates the use of other suitable metals for food applications such as aluminium and brass. Declarations of conformity are available on request.

Fit Testing KitRPE Fit Testing is required for all tight-fitting facepieces including all filtering facepieces (disposable face masks), half masks and full-face masks. This includes negative pressure full-face masks as well as power-assisted full masks, and both self-contained and air-fed breathing apparatus. Information Document HSE 282/28, recommends that RPE Fit Testing should only be conducted by a trained competent person. The COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations include a requirement that the initial selection process for all tight-fitting facepieces should include face-fit testing to ensure the wearer has a correctly fitting device.
