Once all the standards bearers are in the rear of the lists, the Patron says a few words, and introduces his King of Arms (Frank). Frank proceeds to introduce the tournament officials by name, and points out the defendants collectively wearing white, and the appellants collectively wearing the purple.

Start of the bout…appellants’ actions:
9. At the signal from the King of Arms to begin the bout, the appellant’s squire carrying the appellant’s banner leads the appellant into the lists
10. The appellant’s Herald announces to the spectators, the name and bio (bio at first appearance only) of the appellant
11. The same squire then inserts the appellant’s banner on the appropriate side of the Patron’s banner in the tournament banner rack and positions him/herself on the appropriate side of the tournament rack
12. Then the squire proceeds to the tree of arms and strikes the shield denoting the defendant to be challenged in this bout along with striking the shields depicting the weapons to be employed in the bout
13. The appellant’s Herald announces to the spectators that a defendant has been selected and announces the weapons of choice

Start of the bout…defendants’ actions:
14. The defendant’s squire (herald) carrying the banner of the defendant, leads the defendant into the lists
15. The defendant’s Herald announces to the spectators, the name and bio (bio at first appearance only) of the defendant
16. The same squire then proceeds to the tournament rack and inserts the defendant’s banner on the other side of the Patron’s banner and positions him/herself on the other side of the tournament rack
bout preparations:17. An arming squire for the defendant and an arming squire
for the appellant retrieves the weapons to be employed during the bout and gives the weapons to the combatants
18. They ensure that the harness, helm is ready for combat for their respective combatant and then exit the lists
19. The King of Arms enquire the combatants as to their readiness to begin and if so, commands the start of the bout
