The American Watercolor Society has invited the Sacramento Fine Arts Center, one of seven museums and art centers across the country, to show their 151st Traveling
Exhibition. This is the 8th time we have had this honor. We all need to work to make it a BIG event. The New York Exhibition featured 150 paintings chosen from many entries. 40 of these paintings have been selected for the traveling show. We are modifying our usual schedule to be sure that as many people can see the show as possible. We have even included a third Saturday to the AWS show schedule. SFAC member, Sandy Delehanty, (Best of Show winner in Animal House) is in the AWS Exhibition and SFAC is pleased to feature her work on our postcard and all publicity. A $10 entry donation is requested from viewers to help defray the cost of bringing the exhibit to Carmichael.
Highlight of the exhibit is the AWS Gala on Friday, June 8th from 5:30 – 8:30. The Black & White Show will be in Gallery 3, the 5x7’s in the foyer. Entertainment includes a silent auction with many items to bid on, music (Daniel Root on guitar in the studio and harpist Joan Hall in Gallery 2). A wine bar and wine toss (toss a ring to win a bottle of wine) will also be part of the celebration. Everyone attending the Gala will have a ticket for a chance to win a prize in the Gift Shop raffle. Food is being provided by Carmichael’s favorite restaurants: Lido’s, Yianni’s, and Rey Azteca’s plus Marie Dixon’s mouth-watering mushrooms and other delicacies. GALA Ticket: $50
It is a Big Event and volunteers are needed. The Gift Shop will be open and needs cashiers. Call Margaret Pollan 971.3713 or cell 704.8611 to schedule 3 hour shifts.
Help in the kitchen is needed for the Gala Reception on Friday June 8th, the 2nd Saturday Reception, June 9th and the 3rd Saturday Reception, June16th. Sign up sheets for these and other positions are in the studio.
Check out the workshops: We are pleased to have Dale Laitenin, Linda Erfle, Telagio Baptista, and Jodie Mexas instructing as part of the AWS month. Check SacFineArts.org for more information on these workshops.
SHOW OFF SFAC! Be sure to see the prospectus and begin thinking about your best Black and White composition. Remember, sculpture needs to be on the wall. Show off to all the visitors who come to see the AWS show either in the 5x7 foyer show or the Black and White Show. Finished 5x7’s are being accepted now.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR: AWS DOCENT TRAINING with Joan McMurray is Monday, May 21 from 1–2:30 and an evening session on Wednesday, May 23 from 7–8:30.

What’s Going OnThe American Watercolor Society is a non-profit membership organization that began in 1866 to promote the art of watercolor painting in America.
Each year the Society holds a juried exhibition of watercolors from artists throughout the world.
The list of accepted artists for the 2018 Exhibition can be seen on the website americanwatercolorsociety.org. The Jury of
Awards met in New York on February 18th to select winners of $50,000 in awards and medals.
We are proud that 3 members of our Arts Center have been accepted to show in this prestigious exhibit, Cay Dracnik, Ken Potter and this year, Sandy Delehanty.

This is a big year for all of us who love the energy and creativity of the Fine Arts Center. We will be re-negotiating our lease for our current space—a space we love with all of its foibles. There are improvements that we would like to make and would move to another building if we could get a “free” space, but many complications will occur before the year is out. The SFAC Board, with its elected Club representatives will be dealing with this all year. Also, you have received
an invitation to three different all-member meetings where you will have an opportunity to hear about the Flanagan Report and give us your feedback about next steps in response to the recommendations. This is a report from consultant, David Flanagan, who was asked to help us develop a PR strategy for SFAC—but he gave us much more than that! Please come and make your ideas known.
Looking ahead, we have bravely scheduled our Annual Meeting on Friday the 13th of April. We should have developed a set of recommendations from our all-member meetings and will present them at this event. The Annual Meeting will be held in the afternoon, at a time to be announced later, and will feature wine and little nibbles.
Looking even further ahead, read all about the AWS show in this newsletter. And buy your GALA tickets, donate wine, or silent auction prizes. This is a Big Deal.
On a personal note, I cannot thank you enough for your support, love, cards and hugs during this time of my personal loss. My husband George was an NCA Master Painter and loved SFAC for the friends and inspiration he found with you. His last few years were difficult but he always loved seeing his friends at SFAC.

We are excited to begin preparations for this year’s In the Style of the Old Masters show! Now’s the time to consult your favorite art works of 13th–18th century Europe—let them be your muse as you create your original masterpiece!
Unsure where to start? Explore a wide variety of styles and find what speaks to you! Perhaps you admire Leonardo Da Vinci’s polymathic expertise spanning art and mechanical science in the High Renaissance, or enjoy the vibrant frivolities of the Rococo era as painted by Jean-Honore Fragonard. There is so much inspiration to be drawn from this foundational era—
don’t be afraid to explore the depths of history!
And speaking of history, if there are any would-be art historians among us who might be interested in co-chairing this show, please get in contact ASAP! Committee meetings will begin shortly; your time and expertise would be greatly appreciated.
In the Style of the Old Masters will be on display in the SFAC main galleries this summer, August 14th–September 2nd, 2018! Please stay tuned for more info, and contact Show Chair Cheri Awalt ([email protected]) with any questions.
Our Arts Center is excited to be the host for Magnum Opus XXIX, Sacramento Fine Arts Center’s Annual International Open Show, February 20–March 18, 2018. We received 240 entries from 2 countries and 8 states. Our judge, Sacramento City College professor Frank Zamora, chose over 90 art works for the exhibit. A selection of “great works” of art including watercolor, pastel, oil, acrylic, collage, mixed media, photography, sculpture and ceramic. Celebrate the art with us at the 2nd Saturday Reception, March 10, 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Awards, Refreshments, Live Music!

Come and see a great collection of small art works by these two awesome artists.
“Although past the age of retirement, I am still considered an “emerging artist”. I have played on the fringes of various art techniques all my life but only as a respite from a career in business. A few years ago, I discovered my passion: fusing glass. I started in glass as a jewelry artist and have progressed to fused glass mosaics. Since my retirement at the end of 2016, I spend all my available time experimenting with glass and other materials to develop my own style in the world of serious art. My largest work to date is over four feet wide and, as many of my pieces, took several months to complete.
I have a great interest in recycling and I enjoy testing the compatibility of various castoff materials, incorporating them in my work whenever possible. Something recycled appears in just about every piece I produce, may it be wine or beer bottles, pantry jars, old beads, wood, wire, metal, or old sheet glass. I am often attracted to odd junk with the expectation of transforming it into something wonderful.”

GALLERY RENTAL FOR MEMBERSThere are some great benefits to being a member of the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. One particularly special benefit is the ability to rent Gallery 3 or the Foyer. The rental period for these spaces spans an entire month. We still have spaces available in 2018 and this could be great exposure for an artist.
Plan now to rent our galleries in 2019! The Foyer is available for $150 per month. Gallery 3 is available for $250 per month. A $50 nonrefundable deposit is required to hold the space. If you are interested or have any additional questions, please call or email our office: (916) 971-3713.

I have found a new place to display art for our Sacramento Fine Arts Center artists. The fabulous Milagro Centre has agreed to give us a wall! It is not much, but it is a wall on a busy thoughway by The Patriot, Fish Face Poke Bar and the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce offices. We can hang 3 art works and some information about us. The art needs to be no bigger than 30 inches wide, framed. The pieces and framing need to go with each other. Sales will be made by the Arts Center. A replacement piece will be brought over and the sold one brought here to be sold. Your commission is 70%. I am planning to replace the art and artist every 3 months. I am seeking a volunteer to help me curate this opportunity. I expect more wall space soon as the Milagro is going to love us. Thank you to Linda Melody of the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce for helping make this possible!

FROM OUR PRESIDENTS....EXPANDING OUR HORIZONS
This year marks the 40th Anniversary of WASH.
WASH, whatʼs in a name. We know what it means, but does it give others the true picture of who we are. David Flanagan was hired by the Board of the Sacramento Fine Arts Center to do a marketing and brand analysis and suggests that a name should be thought provoking and give an indication of the mission of the organization.
We believe our name does indicate who we are and what we strive for. Anyone with some familiarization of watercolor knows the term. We know it stands for a flood of color across the paper that will give the painting a luminance that no other media can give.
The group who founded our society decided to use this familiar and basic watercolor technique as the name of our organization. It was easy to get Watercolor Artists of Sacramento but what to do with the H? Jan Miskulinʼs mother, Olive I. Schmid, suggested “Horizons” and thus the name was born. While Gail Jones met with Jan and Skip Batchelder on our new Graphic and Website Committee, they had a thought provoking discussion of “Horizons.” Horizons can be taken in many ways from the physical horizons to our internal view of our own horizons. Have you created your own limitations in how you approach your life and art or are you always expanding your horizons?
So itʼs time for our organization to expand our horizons, to look forward, and to put our mark on the Sacramento area art scene.
Many times, the first impression new people get of our organization is through the media. The new Graphic and Website Committee will be working to expand our impact with graphics that provide color and compatibility with current web and print technology.
We can also reach new horizons by entering and promoting our Member Show—Awash with Color April 3-22. Receiving is March 23, 1-5, and March 24, 11-3. The collection of paintings by our talented members will show that our organization is indeed expanding its horizons. Be sure to get people to come to our anniversary celebration at the Reception on April 14, 5:30-8 pm.
Another way the organization is expanding its horizons is through its workshops and demonstrations. We have succeeded in bringing world class people from Sacramento and to Sacramento to broaden the horizons of our members. Frank Eber gave an excellent workshop in January. Be sure to
read the article about the rest of our workshop and program schedule.
Our board suggested that we add a goal to increase our membership. We are looking for ways that encourage and attract new members. If you have ideas on how to increase our membership, please email or talk to us.
Looking forward....From your Co Presidents, Gail Jones and Jo Kopp

MARCH - APRIL, 2018
MARCH MEETING DEMONSTRATION WASH welcomes Sonja Hamilton, an award winning San Francisco born artist to our March 12 meeting. We look forward to her demonstration. The meeting starts at 1:30 p.m.
Ms. Hamilton is well known for her fluid, concise watercolors, whether landscapes, seascapes or floral paintings. Sonja is affiliated with Auburn Old Town Gallery, Auburn, CA, Yosemite Art & Education Center, and is listed in “Who's Who of Business & Professional Women, 1999”. She was the recipient of the Grumbacher Gold Medallion Award in 1996, cover artist for Sure West 2008 telephone book and in 2007 & 2008, two of her paintings were selected for corporate holiday cards to be sent around the world. Sonja's reference book, "Watercolor - It's only a piece of paper" was published in 2015. She says of her work, "Although I draw and paint in many mediums, I find watercolor exciting, spontaneous, and challenging. When I paint, my cares leave and I become totally immersed in what I'm doing. Watercolor is a joy - exhilarating, yet most relaxing for me. It is who I am.”
ANNOUNCING THE 2018 WASH MEMBERS SHOWAPRIL 3-22, 2018The WASH Show Committee is excited to announce the return of Awash With Color! This yearʼs member show will run from April 3 - April 22, 2018 and coincides with WASHʼs 40th anniversary. We are delighted to announce that Jeannie Vodden will judge. Please deliver your artwork on Friday, March 23 from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. or Saturday, March 24 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and mark your calendar, Saturday, April 14 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., for the reception and awards ceremony.
Members may submit up to 3 recently created (within 2 years) original artwork. All works, except 3D watercolor installations, must be framed. TwoD work should be in standard frames with neutral matting and wired for hanging with flat or D-ring brackets. Sawtooth hangers, screw eyes, and clamps will not be accepted. Read the prospectus online at http://www.sacfinearts.org/pdf/2018_WASH_MemberShow.pdf. or pick up a paper copy at SFAC, Blick, or University Art. Nowʼs the time to work on your favorite subject or select your best watercolor for the
show. We hope all WASH members will submit art and make this show a great and memorable event!
APRIL MEETING DEMONSTRATION AND WORKSHOPThe April WASH meeting will feature Jeanne Vodden. “I love painting the complex textures, forms and patterns found in nature,” says Jeannie Vodden. She is a master at combining a deep reservoir of techniques with a relaxed, gentle teaching style. She is known for the magic she creates with a limited palette of transparent staining colors. Playing with light and textures hold great interest for her. See more of her art at: JeannieVodden.com.
Ms. Vodden will conduct a workshop on April 9, then provide a demonstration at the WASH meeting, starting at 7 p.m. If you are interested in this workshop, contact either Kari Bauer, [email protected], telephone: 916-483-2315 or Sue Davis at [email protected], telephone: 916-359-7691.
OCTOBER WORKSHOPMichael Holter - His subject will be Creating Watercolor Portraits from Photos. "I think of my work as impressionistic. I like to represent people or places and allow the painting to evolve from the structure of what is recognizable,” says Michael.
The workshop is scheduled for October 6-8, 2018Members $325, Nonmembers $375.
If you are interested, contact one of the co-chairs, either Kari Bauer or Sue Davis. Their respective contact information is above, under April Meeting Demonstration and Workshop.
All workshops are held at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center, 5530-B Gibbons Drive, Carmichael.

A Message from Your Editor:
A major issue running through this issue is volunteerism. We need more volunteers and what group doesn’t? I thought I’d mention why I volunteer. I decided I was seeing to much hate and negativity in the world and I decided that I should do some-thing to create a world more like the one I want to see. I think art and creativity fos-ters joy in those who make it, see it and buy it. So I volunteer to increase the amount of joy in the world. How about you?

The 2018 Aspiring Artists De-

imaginative and original. The
annual Aspiring Artists De-

artists who have never shown

their art and experience the
juried art show entry process.
The show judge is always
judged by a Master Artist from

“FRENCH IMPRESSIONISTS FREED US”The French Impressionists allowed us to be free with our on-location oil paintings. In this workshop, with a seascape as our subject matter, Juan Peña will demonstrate and teach oil painting effects. By using his limited palette ideas, he will explore and explain the mixing possibilities for on location paintings. The second day we will use the same ideas and effects for a landscape painting of rocks and trees. He will bring two completed oil paintings to demonstrate his painting ideas.
