OCCUPATION: Fashion show director and producer.

Having staged productions in 22 countries, across fourcontinents, Jan Malan’s gained worldwide recognition.“In the early 80’s, I fell into fashion and show productionwhilst doing part-timemodelling to supplement my in-come,” he says. Conceptualising and producing M-Net’sFace of Africa model search catapulted his careersuccess and opened the door to producing at New YorkFashion Week in 2000, the event’s first on-schedulefashion show featuring designers from Africa.

While he’s now constantly on the move, working oneverything from Kinshasa Fashion week in the DRCto Mercedes Fashion Week in Cape Town, Malan’sdedicated to giving back. “Seeing the sufferingaround me motivates me to find ways to make mywork meaningful.” For Malan it’s full steam aheadwith plans to produce shows in America with a USproduction company and United Colors of Fashion,as well as continuing to stage shows throughout Africa.

Hegraduated top in his Master’sclass and among the top eightarchitecture students in SA.He competed against thesestudents in an annual Corobrikcompetition with his project,Shaft No 2. “It all starts withbeating the other students inyour class. Just to be part of itwas amazing.”Further recognition could

soon be in store forWatkins. “Iwas recently asked to presentmy work at a competitioncalled Archiprix. Like theCorobrik competition, itfeatures the best graduateprojects in the world, so I amhonoured to take part. Thereare 1 000 entrants, but only200 make the shortlist. Ifyou do, you go to Madrid torepresent your country.”

Watkins is also trying hishand at entrepreneurship withhis own business, Visual ArtsStudio. He does presentationwork, such as the 3D renderingof buildings undergoingdevelopment, for otherindustry professionals.In the future,Watkins

wants to grow his businessand further his education.He is considering requestingmentorship from forward-thinking architects, both locallyand abroad.When he getsa break, he loves travellingaround southern Africa in hisLand Rover. – SG

because of the political unrest atthe time. His career veered towardspublic relations instead.Working in that field, however,

NATIONAL SPOKESPERSON: ECONOMICFREEDOMFIGHTERS (EFF)TWITTER: @MbuyiseniNdloziNo doubt about it, 2014 has seen JuliusMalemaand the EFFmake a loud and impossible-to-ignoreimpression on the South African political stage.National spokesperson Ndlozi has been pivotal ingetting the party’s message across through traditionaland, increasingly, social media.

A self-declared revolutionary and activist, he has along list of causes to his name, including theWorkers’Solidarity Committee, the Palestinian SolidarityCampaign and the NoBama campaign.

“I have a burning concern for social justice. I leftuniversity andwent straight to Parliament, one chapteraway from completingmy PhD. I have had an active life

politically nonetheless, bothwithin student politics andoutside. But the birth of EFF is really the first ofmy realresponsibilities to society. It is one I hope to do to thebest ofmy ability,”he says.

Amid all themedia hype and sensationalismaround the EFF, Ndlozi, who is also anMP and sitson the communications and telecommunicationscommittees, is very clear about what hewould liketo achieve as spokesperson.“My objective is to winthe core arguments in the public imagination aboutthe economics that constitute EFF’s politics.We needtowin the argument with the poor, the skilled, theunemployed – all South Africans.”

ELITETRIATHLETETWITTER:@RD_murrayThe highest-ranked triathlete on thecontinent, Murray is living proof thatyou don’t have to begin trainingfor a particular sport while still innappies to join the elite.

An avid runner and cyclistas a child, but never morethan average in the pool, theendurance juggernaut won twoconsecutive World Junior DuathlonChampionships in 2006 and 2007to go with his national junior titlesin cross-country and mountainbiking. He then decided to put hisreservations about swimming asideand have a crack at the triathlon.

After a few growing pains, theman from Durbanville in Cape Town

settled into his new multisport codeand capped a fine season in 2012by coming in 17th at the LondonOlympics. He is currently the worldnumber eight, with two podiumfinishes in the ITU World TriathlonSeries in 2014 to show for his efforts.

On the rare occasion that he isn’ttravelling the world competing, thislaid-back Capetonian craves a bitof routine.“Being in one place andgetting into a rhythm is what I loveto do when I get time off, as I don’toften stay in one place!”he laughs.

He isn’t content to merelymaintain his standards andis targeting three worldchampionships in the next six yearsand gold at the Rio Olympics in2016. You may want to put your

ARTISTTWITTER:@GeraldMachonaIt’s hard to believe that thexenophobic riots which shockedSA happened six years ago.Zimbabwean-born artist, GeraldMachona, was studying at theMichaelis School of Fine Arts in CapeTown during this period. The attackshad a profound effect on his work.

The recipient of the AndrewMellon Foundation Scholarshipin 2011, while working towardshis Master’s of Fine Art at RhodesUniversity, Machona created aspace suit constructed out ofdecommissioned Zimbabweandollars as a metaphor for thedifficulties he faced in adapting tolife in a foreign land. He not onlygraduated with distinction, but also

exhibited at the Goodman Gallery inCape Town and was named one ofthe Top 10 Young African Artists byBusinessDay and the Joburg Art Fair.

Machona’s current worktouches on the same subject,including issues of migration

and social interaction, while thedecommissioned currency remains akey medium for pushing visual art’screative limits. He exhibited at theStandard Bank Art Gallery in Jo’burglast year and recently had hiscritically acclaimed work displayedat the Goodman Gallery, also in Jozi.

“I’ve just completed constructinga 1m functional Rubik’s cube, whichwas showcased at the GoodmanGallery booth at the Joburg Art Fair,”says Machona.“And I have a fewprojects I’m working on with theperformance ensemble The BrotherMoves On.”

When Makwarela joinedMuvhango as atrainee scriptwriter in 2007, little did heknow how illustrious he would become.Armed with a Motion Picture Production

qualification, he was soon offered apermanent job, before joining Zone 14 in2009 and working on TheWild in 2010.

Rhinos walk fromMusina to CapePoint to educate people aboutenvironmental conservation and thethreats facing rhinos. Together, theywalked 1 700km, visited 25 schoolsand gave talks to 16 000 children.

“I began to view the environmentdifferently and came to understandhow interconnected the actions ofhumans are,”says Phakathi.

Soon after, he formed GreenKidz Initiative, an NGO that fostersenvironmental consciousness andeducation in under-resourcedschools. He’s currently based inLimpopo, where he spearheads

an environmental services projectthat educates 300 young peoplein environmental awareness andmonitoring. Another project assistshigh school graduates interested inenvironmental education.

“Environmental education is asimportant as the subjects we’retaught at school.We depend on theenvironment for our existence.”
