Destiny, Bungie’s  first  game  since passing  the Halo brand  to 343  Industries  is one of  the most 

anticipated games for 2014. With their first game poised to truly show what the next generation 

of games can offer gamers and their first effort outside of the Halo universe there is huge amount 

of anticipation for Destiny. Will the game be just another Halo clone? How will the game look and 

play on the PS4/Xbox One? These and many other questions have been raised constantly since the 

game’s  announcement  back  in  2013. Thankfully,  like most  developers  seem  to  do  these  days, 

gamers could dive into a portion of the game themselves through a public beta test which featured 

several missions  from  the  game’s  campaign  and  one mode  and  two maps  from  the  game’s 

competitive multiplayer component. Gamers who were  lucky enough  to have a  stable  internet 

connection to experience the public beta test will now feel like there is an eternal wait until the 

game’s launch on September 9th this year. If the wait is absolutely killing you, then allow this article 

to highlight five things to get stupidly excited about for what is anticipated to be one of the hottest 

games for 2014.   

5. A Fully Detailed, Gorgeous Universe

The first thing that struck us and probably many other players was simply just how gorgeous the 

game  looked, even on  the  last generation of  consoles. The draw distance went  for miles with 

absolutely breathtaking scenery, character models looked crisp and menacing (both the guardians 

and the various foes you face on the beta) and a real acknowledgement must be given to Bungie 

for developing such a phenomenal  lighting engine; we can only  imagine how beautiful the final 

game will look on the PS4 and Xbox One…. Graphical power aside, Bungie have developed a fully 

detailed universe for Destiny. The various weapons and vehicles shown in the game feel futuristic, 

voice  acting  is  absolutely  solid  and  all  the  sounds  and  effects  you would  expect  to  hear  in  a 

Blockbuster sci‐fi movie are present in the game. Unfortunately, as with every Beta, there was only 

so much of this breathtaking universe players could experience with the game only allowing access 

to one section of a ravaged, barren Earth landscape. Hopefully the final product will have a huge 

array of diverse and beautiful landscapes for players to explore.   

4. It Feels Like Halo, But It Isn’t Halo…

One  concern  that  probably  has  troubled many  players  in  the  build  up  to Destiny’s release  is 

whether  the game will  just be yet another Halo clone.  In a  saturated market whereby FPS’ are 

either clones of Call of Duty or Halo  it  is often difficult  for a game  to be truly  independent and 

unique. The beta has shown a glimpse into Destiny’s universe and if you have ever played a Halo 

game before then the similarities are blatantly obvious. Character models look surprisingly similar 

to  the  SPARTAN  design  from Halo  and  at  times  enemy  characters  are  reminiscent  of  certain 

covenant  races. Also  the button  layout on  the Xbox  controller  is near enough  identical  to  the 

control layout from Halo Reach, but hey if it isn’t broke don’t fix it, right? For fans of Halo this will 

come as a blessing but if you hate Halo or have never played the series before then fear not! Whilst 

there  are  similarities,  Bungie  have  ensured  that Destiny  is  completely  absent of  any  link  to 

the Halo universe; the mood the game sets is so much darker and more sinister. The threat of the 

growing darkness and extinction of humanity is ever present on the small portion the Beta allowed 

players  to access.  It  felt  like a truly unique gaming experience. Halo’s story sometimes wavered 

slightly, hopefully Destiny is completely devoid of any parasitic life‐form…   

3. A New Multiplayer Experience

Whilst the competitive multiplayer aspect of the Beta allowed gamers to experience what felt like 

something we’ve all played countless times since 2007, Destiny promises to deliver a truly unique 

and entertaining multiplayer experience to players. The story elements the Beta teased allowed 

small fireteams to team up together and tackle campaign missions but the truly incredible aspect 

of Destiny is the ‘public events’. Bungie emphasised that the universe of Destiny will feel ‘alive’ and 

if anything is to be taken from the Beta it is that they have accomplished that. Public events opened 

the game  for multiple  fireteams to tackle waves of enemies and bosses that the game’s engine 

randomly generates and  it certainly  showcased  the MMO elements  the game has promised  to 

deliver. The few public events that were featured  in the Beta were easily the most entertaining 

aspects  to be experienced,  let’s  face  it,  there  is nothing more  rewarding  than a  large group of 

players all teaming up together to take down some of the game’s tougher enemy classes. Hopefully 

the final version will have many different types of public events so players don’t feel the trap of 

repetition.   

2. An Intelligent And Menacing Threat

A common problem FPS’ experience is having enemies that are basically just cannon fodder to the 

player. Enemies that  just absorb bullets till they die and are more or  less stationary meat bags. 

Bungie games have always had a dynamic enemy AI system; enemies that interact with the game 

world and the player’s decision and try to present a real challenge; just try playing any Halo game 

on  legendary  difficulty  setting,  you’ll  know  what  we’re  talking  about.  Destiny continues  this 

tradition as  the game  features a  truly  impressive enemy AI  system  that evolves and  reads  the 

decision the player makes in a firefight. For example, we died on a fireteam mission and following 

the respawn, the enemy was intelligent enough to not repeat the same tactics. This component of 

the game allows each individual battle to feel unique and destructive, and with enemy character 

models looking absolutely fearsome it truly creates a tense and controller gripping experience.   

1. Peter Dinklage

It  seems  the Game  of  Thrones actor  is  going  from  strength  to  strength.  Following  a  great 

performance in X Men: Days of Future Past that was released earlier this year fans can look forward 

to Peter Dinklage’s performance in Destiny as Ghost, your artificial companion. The beta version of 

the game introduced you to Ghost from the offset and the robotic filter added over Dinklage’s voice 

work creates an AI that is truly believable and feels like your companion, not an irritating add‐on. 

Whilst most AI that are featured in games often feel flat and uninspired, Dinklage and Bungie have 

created a companion that reacts to events in the game just as the player would. It feels believable 

which  is  the most  important  thing  for a game  like Destiny,  it adds  to  the phenomenal universe 

Bungie have created.
