    TheMaldivesconsistsapproximately1,190coralislandsclusteredinachainof26atollsinthe

    IndianOcean.Theatollsarescatteredalongthenorth-southdirectionwithanareacoveringroughly

    90,000km.However,only1%ofthissurfaceareaconsistsofland.Thenationliesbetweenlatitudes

    LandwildlifeandvegetationintheMaldivesare

    limitedintermsofbio-diversity.However,this

    aspectisovershadowedbytheabundantmarine

    floraandfaunatobefoundintheMaldives.

    ThemonthofJune2011evensawBaaAtollof

    theMaldivesbeingdeclaredaUNESCOWorld

    BiosphereReserve.TheMaldivesishometo

    over2,000speciesoffishrangingfromreeffish

    toMantarays,MorayEels,reefsharksandtothe

    majesticwhaleshark.Thesemarineeco-systems

    arebothextremelyvibrantandextremely

    fragileatthesametime.Theirvulnerabilitywas

    TheMaldivesenjoysatropicalclimateand

    seasonorHulhanguMonsoon(Southwest

    Monsoon)-MaytoNovember.Thedryseason,

    asthenamesuggests,isaperiodofregular

    sunshinewithlittleornorainshowers.This

    isalsothebestseasonforscubadiving.The

    wetseasonisaperiodinwhichthewholeof

    Maldivesexperiencestorrentialrainshowers

    whichincludesthunderstorms.Thisisthebest

    seasonforsurfingduetogoodswellsandwave

    generation.Thewetseasondoesofferperiods

    ofsunshinesimilartobalmydaysyouwould

    experienceduringthedryseason,asMaldives

    enjoysyearlongsunshine.Thetemperature

    womannormallystayedathomeandtook

    careofthechildrenandotherhousehold

    duties.Shewasalsoresponsiblefor

    Howeverafterthe1970swhichushered

    urbanisation,industrialisationandthe

    growthoftourismhadbroughtabout

    significantchangestothelifestyleand

    professionsofthelocals.MostMaldivian

    peoplenowpursuemodernprofessionsin

    boththeprivatesectorandpublicsector.

    Employmentintheconstructionindustry,

    tourismindustryandtheservicesector

    hasboomedwithhigherconcentrationsin

    Male(capital),commercialandbusiness

    centreofthenation.

    CULTURAL MUSIC & DANCETheMaldivianpeopleareafriendlyfolkthat

    Maldiviancultureisheavilyinfluencedby

    SriLankan,IndianandAfricanelements.For

    inIndiaandisperformedexclusivelyby

    women.Thedancerskeeptimetothe

    rhythmofametalpotwiththemetal

    ringsontheirfingers.Nowadays,drums,

    harmonicasandotherinstrumentsare

    utilised.

    ThaaraistheDhivehiwordforTambourine.

    Thisisadanceexclusivelyperformedby

    men.Itisperformedbyabout22people

    seatedintwoparallelrowsfacingeach

    other.TheearlysongsoftheThaarawere

    inArabic.Thaarawasintroducedtothe

    MaldivesbytheArabstravellingfromthe

    Gulf,mid17thCentury.

    3-4drummersandaleadsinger.

    sounds).Thisisthemostpopularformof

    traditionalMaldivianmusicwithrecent

    annualnationalcompetitionsalsobeing

    heldinthemonthofRamazan.Many
