To Our Dear Guests:

We want to send a big THANK YOU for taking the time and effort to attend this conference. We appreciate the time and effort you made to come here, especially at a time when our economy is going through a deep recession. This event is indeed special, because we set the example of “living within our means” in order to keep the cost of admission affordable for our attendees. We relied on our creativity to work with the resources we had. We are thankful for all the support we received from our sponsors, local businesses, and volunteers. Producing this event was truly a labor of love by the community. We hope that you find your time with us valuable, so that you will come away with a new perspective of hope, support, and empowerment.

In collaboration with the US Department of Labor, Women’s Bureau, Circle Com-munications is proud to produce this financial literacy event for women. We believe that when there is crisis, there is an opportunity to build a better future through knowledge, access to valuable resources, and courage. 7 months ago when the recession began, no one could predict the magnitude that the housing and financial crisis would have on our economy. The subsequent loss of jobs, property, savings, and investments has contributed to the overall lack of confidence about our future. However, we must understand that as painful this recession is, this too will pass, and the speed of our individual financial recover-ies will depend on the steps each of us take to secure our financial present and future.

Today, we are proud to present a day full of knowledge from our excellent choices of presenters. The goal is to provide you with resources and positive energy so that you can leave today ready to embrace what lies ahead for you in the future.

We ask you all to CONNECT with one another, COMMIT to changing your strug-gles into successes, and welcome a sense of CHANGE that will improve your lives.

Sincerely,

Leila PerrerasPresidentCircle Communications, LLC

Welcome!

Marilyn AbedinFor many years Marilyn Abedin and her husband, Vince Cirigliano, have been successful in steering Borel Financial, Inc., their “by referrals only” profes-sional and commercial mortgage brokerage com-pany, to new heights of service. Marilyn, however, is unlike other strategic mortgage planners everyone is familiar with. While the typical goal is to transact the contract, Marilyn’s focus is on how one gets there – i.e., the all important building of trust-based relationships. Because of this, she enjoys considerable repeat business.

Marilyn educates her clients. She knows that the right information allays anxiet-ies and promotes sound decisions. Over the years she discovered a surprising pattern of behavior: unhealthy habits in otherwise successful clients character-ized by financial disruptions and personal beliefs that limit success. Driven by a belief that everyone should live happy and fulfilling lives, Marilyn began to identify ways to foster her clients’ pursuit of life goals as well as their sometimes audacious dreams. In doing so, she has happily had what some describe as “uncanny” success.

Given that Marilyn’s most powerful motivator is watching her clients flourish, it comes as no surprise that she has now taken her experience in finance, com-munication, technology, and problem solving gained from her many years in the mortgage world, coupled it with a 35 year healthcare career in Radiology, and became an advisor for the creation of financial health and wealth. In this capacity she is now able to focus her energies daily towards maximizing poten-tials in both her own and her clients’ lives.

A native San Franciscan, Marilyn holds a BS, Biological Science, San Francisco State University. She has also completed two years study in a Health Science Masters Program.

eas on sustainable growth and green living, as well

design, and exhibition development. She is currently

pursuing an MBA in Sustainable Management at

How Being Green Gives You More Green!

How can you save money and the planet without super hero powers? Valéria

Miranda will help you add a few smart tools to your utility belt so you can proud-

ly save the planet one purchase (or savings) at a time.

How Being Green Gives You More Green! $$$

In tough economic times, simple living has become a fad even the rich are fol-lowing. Research shows a direct correlation between living simply, being green and how those two concepts can save you money. The ten tips below, taken from the Dumb Little Man: Tips for Life website explains the efficiency in saving money by living simply and being green.

. Cook at home often: If both the husband and wife work, this is likely to be very difficult. Start out with the habit of cooking at home once a week and slowly increase the frequency until you find a balance between saving money and getting stressed out.

Circle’s note: By supporting local grocery stores and farmer’s markets you contribute to the green movement by saving oil and emitted CO2 on items being sent to you.

2. Make your own coffee: Everyone seems to have heard of the latte factor. Even though the author may have overestimated the savings from skipping a latte at Starbucks, don’t underestimate the ding it puts in your pocket in the long run. You don’t have to entirely ban drinking coffee, but skip it as often as possible unless you make it at home.

Circle’s note: The tops on coffee cups cannot be recycled.

3. Brown bag lunch at least a few days a week: Lunch times are great oppor-tunities to network and make connections that could improve your career growth. So unless there is a common eating area for brown baggers, you may choose to limit brown bagging lunch to three days each week. Find a balance between saving some money and making the connection.

Circle’s note: If you often eat out, put into consideration how much time it takes to travel from one restaurant to another the next day and calculate how much gas you have used.

4. Make a list before going shopping: They call it impulse buying for a reason. Humans simply have a very tough time resisting the temptation to pur-chase extras while shopping. Without a list you will buy items that you sim-ply do not need. Even worse is when your forget to purchase the actual item you came to the store for in the first place. If you plan on cooking at home, pre-plan a rough menu and make a list before you go grocery shopping. Getting all that you need in one trip can help avoid another un-necessary trip and temptation.

Circle’s note: People tend to spend on items they don’t necessarily need. When making your list put into consideration what kind of items you can get that are environmentally safe like eco friendly light bulbs.

5. Use grocery store bags to line trash cans: This may not work if you use a massive trash can but we use a small sized one for which the grocery bags are a perfect fit. This not only helps us save some money, but reduces our environmental foot print and avoids the kitchen from stinking from a huge overflowing trash can.

Circle’s note: Nowadays people bring their own shopping bags to the grocery stores. Just remember not all plastic bags can be recycled!

. Instead of buying books, borrow books from the library: Whenever pos-sible, borrow your books instead of buying them. The card to your public library is free and the libraries are generally well stocked.

7. If you have to buy books, check if you can buy it used: Used books do not quite give the same feeling as leafing through the crisp pages of a brand new book. But considering that you can get used books for almost as much as half the price of a new book, it is a small price to pay. For text books, look online on bulletin boards, mailing lists etc, and price compare on websites like www.addall.com.

Green Tips

8. Bottle your own water: Drinking water is good for your health. I always make it a habit to keep some at my desk at all times. Bottled water is the most convenient since it can provide protection against accidental spills. That said, buy bottled water only once in a while, and then reuse that bottle to fill your own water. If you are not happy with tap water, invest in a Brita Filter – in the long run it can save a lot of money.

9. Ride your bike or carpool whenever possible: In many of the cities in the US it is hard to get by without a car. That said, just because you have a car does not mean you have to use it every day. Whenever possible, ride your bike or share a ride with a colleague or spouse and save both on gas and reduce the environmental footprint.

0. Regulate your electric use: When not in use, unplug electric appliances. Apparently, unplugging the TV instead of just switching it off can save a lot of electricity! When not in a room, switch off the lights and the fan. Use a programmable thermostat to control your A/C and heater usage. If that’s too much, at least know what each appliance uses and unplug a few of them.

Things you cannot recycle:

• Styrofoam and packaging supplies• Gift wrapping paper• Pizza boxes and take-out food boxes or frozen food boxes• Plastic credit cards• Plastic hangers• Plastic bags• Plastic bottle caps• Soy milk cartons• Mirrors• Shredded paper• Shower curtains and liners• Deodorant sticks• Plastic lids• Wipes and sponges• Broken glass• Mobile phones• Ink cartridges

Dollars Sense

It’s time we came to our senses about our personal finances. I say this with deep conviction; both from personal experience as well as the many conversations I’ve had over the past few years, with women who simply refuse to face facts when it comes to matters of money. I admit there is something very daunting about getting up close and personal with one’s bank statements - whether online or on paper. Have you ever “snuck up” on your computer screen, or closed one eye in order to delay or soften the impact of today’s balance? There’s that word again; balance. Oh my, it certainly weaves it’s way through our spiritual, intellec-tual, physical AND financial lives, doesn’t it? Women are from Venus and Men from Mars, and I’ve noticed that for the most part, our ideas about money are worlds apart. Disclaimer: Please note that I’ve said “for the most part.” Financial literacy is not gender specific. Some women are incredible money manag-ers and I tip my hat to them - my empty hat that is, hoping that they’ll drop in a donation. And some men are definitely over-spenders. This writing is dedicated to my “cents-less” sisters who engage their emotions in every trans-action - large and small. We can justify just about anything, using creativity and tears. Some of us have left our safe corporate jobs in search of ourselves and have mustered up all the faith we can in our ability to be entrepreneurs. We know we have the talent, passion and business plan, but some of us lack the financial know-how to deliver us to the land of profit-able returns. Especially in this year of economic challenge, I’ve expanded my horizons about money and have made the following six intentions for 2009 and beyond: ) I will be honest with myself, and my partner about money. I’ll listen to his advice instead of avoiding it for fear he won’t agree with my strategy du jour. 2) I will live within my means and LOVE what I already have. 3) Instead of enlisting only the help of Lakshmi (the Hindu goddess of abundance), I will also seek the counsel and advise of actual human beings whom I know “get it” about money. 4) I will ask myself several times each day, “Cassie, is what you’re doing right now contribut-ing to the growth of your business?” If not, I’ll reassess and re-engage. 5) I will JOYFULLY pay back the institutions that have helped me live beyond my means over the past few years - on my merry way to the land of financial freedom. ) I will not engage in conversations that dwell on lack. I will continue to keep my head in the sand in this regard - peeking out ever so often to balance my checkbook and budget. I wish you balance, abundance, success and above all WISDOM in all your financial en-deavors. And remember, money doesn’t necessarily attract happiness, but happiness actu-ally does attract money. And, you can take that to the bank!
