2019 marks 100 years ofbusiness for Desser and weare as passionate todayabout quality, service andstyle as our ancestors werealmost 100 years ago. For our Centenary, we’ve created a collectionthat captures the natural beauty of rattancombined with modern fabrics and shapes thatallow our suites to fit into any area of thehome.

To our designers, creators, machinists,delivery drivers, warehouse team and officestaff – thank you. Thank you for yourcontribution to the success of the business forthe last 100 years. We’re grateful to have youas part of the Desser family and know thatyour contribution is what ensures our successyear on year.

100 Years TimelineAfter serving in WW1, Isaac saw the basket trendtaking off in Belgium so decided to bring the baskettrend to the UK and started selling to market stalls.Isaac`s brother, Simon soon joined afterwards and theyworked together sourcing and selling basketware atmarkets close to their home in Manchester.

30’s With the business`s success, the Desser teamcontinued to grow larger and larger. Travellingsalesman Morris Desser, son of Isaac joined andtravelled all over the UK & Europe to source the bestwicker products to sell in the UK.

40’sShopping Baskets and Cookery Baskets became one ofour best sellers during the 40’s.

50’s Ronnie Stewart, the Son-In-law of Simon Desser joinedthe Desser team and incorporated the Stewart familyinto the Desser business.

60’s Gordon Desser joined the company at 18 and duringthis time became a travelling salesman. Each year, hewould attend the Canton fair in China, sourcing evenmore quality products to bring to the UK.

70’s This decade saw Desser move to its new home inManchester – a purpose-built warehouse, office andmanufacturing space. It also saw the 3rd generation ofthe family to join the business, with Michael Stewart in1970 and Barry Stewart in 1978 - both of whom startedworking in the warehouse then in sales before travellingto source from the Far East which Barry still does tothis day.

80’sJulian Desser joined the team and introduced theDesco Digest - keeping all staff up to date with thelatest news at the company. Gordon’s son Simon alsojoined the company, starting the 4th generation of thefamily involved in the business.

90’s In the 90’s we began to look like the Desser you knowand love today – importing indoor rattan and canefurniture from Indonesia. Mark joined in 1997,developing the sales team and ideas to further promoteDesser and its quality products.

00’s We opened our Manchester showroom to the public,giving local customers the chance to check out thequality craftsmanship of our Indoor and Outdoor rattanfurniture for themselves. Our Manchester showroom isstill open today, showing off our wide range of rattanfurniture.

David joined in 2017, being the latest member of the4th generation of the family to be part of the Desserteam.

Future for DesserAs you can see from our brief history overview, we’vealways stayed ahead of the trend importing the latest inrattan homewares and furniture. Looking forward,we’re continuing to work with our skilled suppliers tocreate on trend pieces fit for any room in the home.

Step 2We have 3 grades of fabric this year, B gradesbeing our entry level fabrics, which aremachine washable and made from 100%polyester. C grades fabrics which are aslightly better quality of material and fabriccomposition. D grade fabrics are oursuperior grade which are all Aqua Cleanfabrics - this material gives you a little bit ofassurance and allows you to clean stains usingwater. In all we have 38 fabrics to select fromacross the 3 grades - see our websitewww.desser.co.uk for further information onthese fabrics

Desser CareWhile cane is an especially resilient material, itis incredibly important to look after yourfurniture correctly.

Frames can be cleaned by wiping down with asoft, damp cloth. You can also use a toothbrushor a dry paint brush between the grooves toremove any dust or grime - a vacuum with asmall brush will work too.

Avoid using chemical products like benzene,thinners and abrasive cremes. An occasionalspray of furniture polish will keep your canefurniture looking its best.

Its recommended that you regularly turn yourcushions and draw your blinds, so that anyfading caused by direct sunlight is evenlyspread. Your furniture should also be kept in adry environment.

Following these simple steps will allow you toenjoy your furniture for a lifetime.

Qualofil TechnologyOur Qualofil cushions on our Seville andSwivel Rocker’s use fibre fusion technology,meaning your cushions spring back to theiroriginal shape year after year.

While the fibre fusion ensures plumpness,they also give our cushions a softer look andfeel compared to other fillings, making for amore comfortable sit. Plus, Qualofil cushionsare made with low C02 emissions too!

Pirelli Webbing To ensure our furniture offers the ultimatecomfort, we use only the best materials whenbuilding our suites. Pirelli webbing ensuresthat your suite frames remain strong and firmand support the rest of the upholstery. Withsuch a strong foundation, you know you willbe sitting comfortably for years to come!

Dacron WrapDacron Wrap is another high quality materialwe use when hand making your suite. It isused on our upholstery fillings and foams toprevent loose, worn areas forming on yourcushions and reduces the wear on yourfabrics by reducing friction.

Quality Built InWe only use the highest quality materialswhen creating our handmade suites andconduct regular, rigorous quality checksat each stage of assembly. Our frames areassembled, cushions hand made, and yoursuite is packed for delivery all at ourManchester warehouse and offices,meaning we’re always monitoring what’sbeing sent out to our customers.

Our Environment & Us We take great care in designing and creating ourfurniture with sustainability and our environmentalimpact at the forefront of production. Our quality rattan issourced in Indonesia and we work closely with localfactories and growers to protect Indonesia’s stunningnatural landscape. Rattan is ecologically important,growing up to six meters a year in areas that cannotsupport other land products – such as those remainingunder flood waters for long periods of time. Rattan is aclimbing palm and can only grow amongst existing treessuch as fruit orchards and rubber estates, so farming of

rattan encourages the preservation of forests in its natureas a companion crop. It’s one of the most sustainablematerials in furniture manufacturing, compared to hardwood alternatives which take up to 30 years to grow.

Rattan farming provides sustainable income to some ofthe poorest people living on the fringes of the forests,helping generate employment and build communities inthese farming areas.
