M E S SAG E FROM OUR
DIR ECTOR Welcome to the 8th Dukhan English School Model United Nations
conference. Model United Nations is the perfect platform for the youth of
the world to unite together and discuss issues that on paper would seem
to surpass them. However, this is not the case. These students apply
themselves with vitality and strength that you forget that these students
are only students, and not working, responsible adults. During every MUN
conference, MUN students become adults - they dress like adults, they
think like adults and even talk like adults. They are role models for society,
a society that is changing daily, for better or for worse. MUN has no
prejudice. MUN has no fear. MUN has no conflict. MUN is a simple means
for students to be united in their belief that the world needs to be
saved, to be improved. If the world was run
by MUN students, could you imagine
what it would be like? MUN is an
inspiration. It makes you see the world
through the eyes of the future. A future
that is bright, a future that is exposed
to the philosophies and concepts
of others.

DETHRONING DYSTOPIA
A dystopia is conventionally defined as an imagined state or
society in which there is great suffering or injustice. In our
current era of over consumption of resources and abuse of
power, we risk transforming our near future into a world of
havoc. Current human activities around the globe are
jeopardizing our planet, as well as our society.
The scale of our damage is almost unfathomable, primarily in
the context of our environment humans represent a mere
0.01% of all life on earth, yet we have caused the
disproportionate extermination of 83% of all wild mammals
and around 50% of plants. Essentially we have already created
a dystopian era for these creatures wherein they no longer
exist. However, we must still reverse the on-going damage to
our environment that sees 150-200 species of plant, insect,
bird and mammal becoming extinct every 24 hours. This is
greater than anything the world has experienced since the
vanishing of the dinosaurs nearly 65 million years ago.
Aside from the explicit issues such as global warming, there
are further multi-faceted and implicit obstacles that bear the
risk of contributing to the creation of a dystopian future.
Aspects of this issue include political and economic
problems: prolonged corruption, countries such as Venezuela
may find their economic development retarding that can
render the country and its society extremely behind most
nations in the future which introduce a multitude of issues for
citizens; the demise of economic trade through
undermining globalization, which is already being
made a reality through Brexit, Trump and
growing protectionist policies, and intensified political divides,
which can result in erupting civil wars and secessions within
the divided nations.
From the environmental and social aspect of this problem,
many other issues continue to endanger us: overpopulation,
which threatens food security; the takeover by artificial
intelligence, which although seems fictional, is already being
used for discreet illegal practices such as fishing through AI
controlled boats and online manipulation of consumers; the
rise of obesity and obesity related diseases, which will render
the human race as physically weaker through passing
generations, a Harvard study shows that 57% of American
children will be obese by age 35.
These listed examples barely scratch the surface of the myriad
of issues that can escalate through negligence in the future.
Efforts such as the UN sustainable development goals,
established in 2015 by the UN, aim
to tackle much of the principal issues.
However, this endeavor alone is only
effective to an extent and does
not completely erase the possibility
of a dystopian future. Only
through the collective efforts of
our populations can we, as a
human race, dethrone the
looming threat of a dystopia.

THE
BIG FOURBIG FOUR
The world today is the product of the past. Actions we chose to make yesterday formed the environment we are living in today. The choices we make today will form the world tomorrow. However, it isn’t that simple. The world today is the product of generations and generations of actions all l inking to today. We are the product of how the people before us chose to live and what action they chose to take. But now it’s our turn. We will be the ones to change the cycle. This MUN conference has been organized by our team but it will be brought to life by you, the delegates. Just like the solutions presented to us by generations before us will be brought to life by us, the youth. Your decision to partake in this experience will impact how you choose to tackle problems tomorrow, what you choose to accept as impossible and what you choose to change to “possible”. We will be the ones to mold the environment of tomorrow by taking action today. We will be the ones to dethrone the dystopia.
Much like anything in life, Model United Nations is what you make out of it. With the right preparation and willingness to learn, it can be an extremely enhancing experience. Collaboration, leadership, communication and critical thinking are few of the many skills that it will help you develop. Whether you decide to attend our conference to enhance these skills or to meet new people, we at DES want to provide you with the best opportunity to pursue your interests. Three years ago when I first joined DESMUN as a nervous delegate intimidated by the formality of it all, I instantly decided that it was too late to make any significant progress. I regretted not having arrived at the scene earlier. However, I would like to remind all new delegates and chairs kick starting their MUN journeys at DES that this is certainly not the case. Our Big Four would like to especially welcome you warmly and wish you the very best of luck at DESMUN 2019. And to everyone else, we hope you enjoy your visit and will leave only having learned something.

6 years and 16 conferences later, it all boils down to this. Model United Nations is a platform which every individual must experience at least once in their school lives. Hello, my name is Zayan Mohamed Salil, and it brings me great honour to be serving as President for DESMUN 2019. Our world as we have it is a deceitful dystopia where there is a severe discrepancy in power which in one way or the other, every one of us is responsible for. Every decision counts. Having trust in your intuition, believing that there will be better days is the motive to dethroning our global dystopia. The actuality that Model United Nations provides is the first step into the world of adulthood. It acts as foundation which i l luminates the most critical issues of all time, allowing tomorrows future to view such issues from a multitude of perspectives, whilst engaging in the flow of debate, all while making l ifelong relations. On behalf of the entire DESMUN 2019 team, we hope to provide a valuable conference for each and every individual.
I was involved with MUN since I was 12, I began as an admin at DESMUN II alongside the current DESMUN president, Zayan Salil. From playing Macklemore’s “Thrift shop” on loop (it was new back then) with my friends and messing about as an admin in 2013, to now becoming the Deputy President, I’ve come a very long way in the past 6 years of pursuing this remarkable activity.
Working together as a big four on the preparation for the conference has been extremely gratifying. Together we decided on the theme; Dethroning the Dystopia. This theme serves as a blanket term that refers to any devastating issue that threaten our future, this includes climate change; a looming issue that threatens our future survival. Furthermore, the escalating consumption of finite resources also threatens the availability of resources for future generations. These, along with countless other issues pose a real risk to our survivability as a human race. As global citizens, we must work together to solve these issues that constitute the threat of a dystopia. Hence, by solving them we would be dethroning a possible dystopia.

EXE CUT IVE TEAMEXE CUT IVE TEAM PRE S SPRE S S I have been an admin, a press, a delegate you name it! But I was
never Tech though. I’ve always been intrigued of how the Press
team works; the visuals, the writings, the videos, the website,
the stress, and the thrill of it all. As a member of the Press team,
you not only document a conference but you also learn about
various global issues. Our goal is to make sure that any visuals
you see are not only aesthetically pleasing but also evokes a
sense of urgency towards the current issues we are facing today.
It’s a privilege to be given the opportunity to be a part of
DESMUN’19 and we hope you enjoy this year’s conference.

Hello bros! My name is Razal Rafeeque, Deputy Head of Press for
this year’s DESMUN. I'm really looking forward to working with
the greatest press team of all time; trust me the world’s agreed
on this. We know your Instagrams waiting for that killer picture
and don't worry we got you! On the serious side, I hope our
conference is a really fun and memorable part of your school life.
I wish for you all to really grow a sense of responsibility for our
dying earth and collectively overcome this dilemma. Spiderman
once said, "There is no friendly neighborhood Spiderman, if there
is no neighborhood". We really are in the "endgame" now; sorry, I
had to. Hopefully we'll be able to deliver amazing things. Have a
good time bros!!

My name is Taqi Rahim and I will be your Deputy Head
Of Press for Desmun’19. For me, a camera and a video is an
extension of who I am. Thus, my 3 years of experience within the
Press team for various MUN conferences has enabled me to
develop my identity and perspective of global issues. My passion
for art and my academic talent has enabled me to advance my
knowledge on the current affairs of the world. This allows me to
extend my knowledge and artistic expression to all delegates,
directors and fellow executive members. Therefore, to conclude I
hope that my hard work and dedication can contribute to
DESMUN being a successful conference for you.

cannot deny the fact that it has been an equally worthwhile
experience that has brought me so much joy.

Hi! I am Hafsa Jabeen, Deputy Head of Admin for this year’s
conference. As someone who was very shy and hated the idea of
speaking in front of the class, MUN has definitely helped me by
building up my confidence, public speaking and communication
skills and it has also educated me on serious issues, which is why I
strongly recommend young people to take part in MUN at least
once. From starting my secondary school years as an admin and
ending them as Deputy Head of Admin, I’m really excited and
honoured to be part of the executive team this year and I hope
this year’s conference will be the best one yet.

Do MUN they said, it’ll be fun they said, turns out it was really
fun, even though it required pulling a couple of all nighters. For
me, MUN is about meeting new people, making new friends,
opening yourself up to opinions and questions, and developing
views on issues around the world. I am your Deputy Head of
Admin and I can’t wait to see and meet you guys at the
conference and, I hope DESMUN becomes a highlight of your
2019.

Good looks and technology. My name is Afras Cassim and I am
your Head of Tech this year. I’d describe myself as a Samsung in a
world of iPhone’s meaning both talent and appearance not just a
scam. I’ve been a part of MUN for the past 5 years and the one
thing I’ve noticed is that technologically not much has changed,
much like the iPhone. Therefore, this year DESMUN 2019 will be
different, a reimagining of the way tech incorporates itself into
debate; bringing you a seamless experience between both real
life interactions and digital interactions, that’s a promise the
Tech Team intends on keeping. HEAD OF TECHHEAD OF TECH AFRAS CASSIM

AGASIR PADILLA Hello. I am Andrew Joji and I am one of the Senior Committee Chairs for
DESMUN '19. Being a member of the MUN club over the past four years
has opened my eyes as an individual to global issues and has helped me
build confidence and take part in more constructive debates. Some of
my most fond memories in MUN have been due to the chairs in my
committee being entertaining and friendly. And as your Senior
Committee Chair this year, I hope our team has helped train the Chairs
in creating many memorable memories, which you can look back upon
in the future. Remember, don't forget to enjoy the food and Smile
More™.
My name’s Agasir Padil la and I am one of your Senior Committee Chairs.
Being to a minimum of 10 conferences over the past 2 years or so, MUN
has taught me to look into matters at a more profound level and has
provided a platform where I can learn and discourse about issues that
broaden my perspective of the ever -so changing world. My role in this
conference is to aid the student officers in establishing an objective
research report for the delegates of this conference to have enough
knowledge when advocating for their nations’ ideals. Hopefully, this will
be as memorable for you as it is for me, enjoy the conference.

Hello! My name is Zamian Maré (a.k.a. Tech/Sound guy), your
Deputy Head of Tech for DESMUN 2019. Being part of DESMUN
for four years, has taught me alot about myself. I learnt what it
means to be a 'team player', and discovered hidden talents! My
hope is that each and every one that is apart of DESMUN this year
finds their hidden talents and develop skills that will go with them
for the rest of their lives... Last but not least, don't forget to have
FUN!!!

It has been said that the 21st Century is an era of peace,
if we were to compare to the 20th century or other such
times of complete chaos, war and tyranny. Epidemics
such as the Black Death and Malaria are not as daunting
as they used to, and the most threatening wars only
affect a select few of nations and peoples. Yet, we have
regions such as Kashmir, amidst the struggle for the
land’s sovereignty be it Indian, Pakistani or Kashmiri
sovereignty, testify how far we are to this prosperity and
justice that each Nation swore by during the universal
declaration of Human Rights, the Atlantic charter and
other such relevant international framework that
advocates for equity and the well -being of the world’s
citizens.
2019 marks the 71st year of Kashmir being a disputed
land between India and Pakistan. In just the last decade
of this dispute there has been at least 100,000 civilian
casualties. India and Pakistan continue to dispute over
Kashmir because land is a country’s pride, if one cannot
possess it or defend it where does the country’s pride lie,
on this topic, I would like to argue that a country’s pride
is its people. However, as the former Secretary General
once said “In the end, it comes down to values... defined
by the UN Charter: peace, justice, respect, human rights,
tolerance, and solidarity. All major religions embrace
these principles, and we strive to reflect them in our
daily lives.” This is how to secure economic conditions
that people can live through, not through war,
negotiations or diplomacy but by the values in which a
nation can hold on to when enacting policies.
