This was my final shot. I called it Banana Bread a la Mode. I baked this treat on my own using a simple banana bread recipe that my mom gave me. I jazzed it up with pecans, a chocolate center, caramel drizzle, and of course whipped cream. To add some color to the shot I chose bright red strawberries and blueberries.

Food photography was the most enjoyable of the semester. Not because we got to eat all of the delicious desserts that were on set, but mostly because of the setup that goes into plating a dish. It takes a certain sense of trial and error, add this, take away that, gloss this, garnish that. By far the yummiest photo shoot of my entire study period. Credit: Hortencia Cruz for staging this shot.

On this particular day we were practicing a lighting technique that is commonly used in portrait photography. It is an ancient technique and the goal is to achieve a butterfly-like shadow directly under the nose. It is known as one of the most flattering lighting setups.

Rembrandt lighting is used mostly in Portrait Photography. This type of lighting creates dynamic photos that are visually intriguing. The goal is to use 2-3 lights setup in a way that will create a triangle under the subjects eye.

New OrleansI’ve had the pleasure of visiting New Orleans twice. There is something about this city that awakens your senses like no other place. Walking in the French Quarter at night is a world on it own. It’s the food, the music, the people, and the vibe of this city that makes it so unique. I took this shot to capture how the shops that sweep the city are endless.

Studio SessionsWe shot these photos in the studio on Campus. My model Freida was a pleasure to work with, and had such a comfortable presence on camera. With very few editing in Photoshop we were both happy with the end results.

Dreamlink LogoDreamlink Media is a company that I created that specializes in graphic design, digital design, and web design. I designed this logo to represent the vision that I have for this company in the future. I am a firm believer in dreams. People should always dream big, and put in the work to achieve these dreams. The crescent moon symbolizes growth, prosperity, and embracing chance. The link is the “link” to one’s dreams. Dreamlink: Your Vision. Your Dream. Our Art.

Retro VectorsOne of my favorite pieces in my Digital Design class. We were instructed to create a vector piece using Illustrator by tracing images and putting them together for one final product. I found an image of a girl standing in a music store with her guitar in hand. I then traced records, and the music wave/notes. For the background I created a gradient mesh using the colors from the records. It’s funky, and retro, reminds me of the 70’s.

Woman’s Head SpaceThis was a composition of various images and we were instructed to come up with a concept that was either funny, out of this world, or something culinary. I chose to go out of this world. I call this a “Woman’s Head space”. Shoes, jewelery, fashion, and make up. I used a space image as my background, masked out all the backgrounds of the other images, reduced the opacity on the woman, and blended the ring onto her finger.

Sketched to Digital Graphic

This piece started as just a doodle, and I kept building on it. Using illustrator I was able to convert this sketch into an elegant graphic.

Sketched to Festival PosterI created a festival poster, but made the decision to start with a sketch. I was going for an old school hip hop meets jazz feeling. I executed this with a classic boom box and piano keys. I did however leave the piano keys out of the final project. When it comes to design you just never know what can happen, or how your design will evolve.

Sketched to Logo

I created a logo that would represent myself as a designer. I like to create designs that have a lot of movement in them. It was essential that my logo embraced that same concept.

Sketched to Graphic

A graphic that I doodled by “accident”. With no real final idea in mind, this sketch was progressive. I was happy with the sketch and knew I needed to take it to the digital level

Web Design

Nude Bee HoneyThis was a one page web mock-up created using Photoshop. In this assignment we were instructed to use Photoshop as a base for designing out web pages. This makes it easier to show a client what his/her web site will look like before starting the coding.

Page 19: Designs by JSmith - Interactive PDF

Dreamlink MediaThis was the second step in the Web Designing process. From Photoshop to Dreamweaver, I was able to build the pages of my website. All of the above was done by coding in order to place objects in a particular location of the web page. Photoshop was used for styling.
