Designing & Developing Virtual Classroom Training

The On-Line Learning Mastery Series

Welcome

"Through many years of active public life and through observing many kinds of people, I have found that the strongest, most competent and reliable man is the one who is first to admit his own inadequacy."

J. Edgar Hoover

Icebreakers

An activity used as a warm up. It’s useful to create a risk-free atmosphere and to gain the learner’s’ confidence.

– What are some of your favorite Icebreakers?

– How can they be used in virtual classroom training?

This is the type of “thinking” we will use throughout today’s session.

Introduction

Course Objectives

At the end of this session you will be able to:

– Identify the anatomy of a Virtual Classroom

– Describe the tools in most Virtual Classrooms to design robust interactivity

– Transfer ILT design skills to Virtual Classroom Training (VCT)

– Create Facilitator Guides and materials clearly and easily for VCT

– Share Best-practices and experiences

The duration of this course is approximately 2.5 hours

This course focuses on the design and development of Virtual Classroom Training (VCT) to all agencies who create VCT courses. We will demonstrate this capability through Elluminate Live, however the content is system agnostic.

Introduction

Agenda

1. Why use virtual classrooms?2. The anatomy of a virtual class3. Transferring Instructor-led Training (ILT) design skills to VCT4. Designing robust interactivity5. Developing VCT Materials6. Look at best Practices

Have you ever designed a course for a Virtual Classroom before?

Why Use VCT?

Why bother changing from ILT?

– Makes training more accessible– Delivers engaging, interactive presentations– Organizes breakout sessions– Receives instant feedback– Testing– Cost savings: VCT is 80% less– Impact: Learners interact with experts– Global Accessibility– Location, location, location– Learning JIT– Automated Administration

Expectations

What this session is and isn’t:

– Not a technical Elluminate Live session– Not a functional Elluminate Live session– Is focused on Virtual Classroom capabilities– Is focused on Designing in the virtual classroom environment– Is focused on Developing materials to be used in any VC tool.

A Question of Timing

• How long should a VCT experience last?– 1 to 3 hours max– Build in Breaks for classes over 90 minutes– Spread large classes over several days– Blend your solutions appropriately

• How often should interactivity occur?– 3-5 minutes

ILT to VCT

The difference between a class and a course is:

Polling Question

Length of the event

They are synonymous

A class has a specific time to attend

A course is designed to be taught

Both C & D are correct

Summary

– ILT Design Skills will transfer to VCT– It’s about Design not Technology– Additional skills are required, but easy to attain– ADDIE Model applies– It will take practice– Engagement is key– A bad design is a bad design– Classes should be no longer than 2.5 hours– Add breaks

Practical Application

Exercise #1

1. Select one of the 4 objectives

2. How you would construct an exercise for instructor-led training.

3. Now what you would do to make this exercise interactive in VCT?

4. You have 7.5 minutes to complete

5. Begin now

Bhavna is designing several different courses. She needs to write exercises for each of the following objectives.

1. To define 10 legal terms2. To Identify 4 roles (people) in a project team3. To list fears when speaking in public4. To choose what not to do when dealing with difficult customers

Robust Interactivity

What do people remember?

People Remember

Summary

– Get to know your VCT tool’s capabilities well

– Stretch your imagination– Make sure all interaction has value– Do nothing gratuitous– Ask yourself, “How would I do it in ILT?”

Translate it to VCT– Remember “A bad design is a bad design.”

Recommendations

PowerPoint

– Create a template

– Use light background colors

– Test your presentation in your VCT tool

– Use full screen when necessary

– Different PPT for each session

– Use graphics appropriately

– Use animation

– Embed Leader’s guide into notes section

Exercise #2

1. Work through the exercise

2. Raise your hand when completed

3. Then, use the chat function to give us a 2-word description of your experience

4. Be prepared to volunteer, to speak

5. You have 3 minutes to complete

6. Begin now

Think of Virtual Classes you either attended, read about, designed or conducted. Write down:

1. What worked? Why?2. What didn’t work, Why?3. What tips would you suggest?

What have I learned?

Best Practices

– Position Learner as ally– Don’t be afraid of pre-work - Lecture ahead of time if

possible. Use online time for collaboration– Certify trainers through X# hours as student– Avoid: Death by PowerPoint– Build in collaboration & interactivity– Use experts wherever you can– Interaction every 3-5 minutes– Don’t forget what you already know:

• You need ice-breakers• You need variety• Backup’s for PowerPoint (in case of lost connection)• Call on people

24 Hours in the Life of a Synchronous Learner

Assignment

Practical Application

Exercise #3, Homework

1. Take my presentation, Writing Objectives and write a 15 minute lesson

2. Make it interactive by involving the learner

3. Create at least 1 exercise and 2 polling questions

4. Insert the Leader’s Guide in the notes section of PowerPoint

5. Email me ([email protected]) within 2 weeks from today

You will write a training lesson called, Writing Objectives within the next two weeks. After which you send to me for review:
