The new Oslo Opera House, situated on the Bjrvika peninsula in Norways capital, rises like a snow-white iceberg from the depths of Oslo Fjord. In this location, it serves not only as an aesthetic setting for theatre, ballet and opera but also as an outstanding symbol of modern Norwegian architecture. The inviting lines of the impressive building designed by Snhetta A/S symbolically link land with sea, people with art, and Norway with the rest of the world.

The Oslo Opera House, which opened in 2008, is Norways largest cultural building project ever.

    The 38,500 m2 Opera House houses a theatre auditorium/concert hall seating 1,360.

nland A large illuminated wave has been realised in glass and steel along Finlands Kotka waterfront: the new Vellamo Maritime Centre, a building of international architectural stature. Finnish architect Ilmari Lahdelma has left his mark on this striking edi ce, inspired by Kotkas beautiful seaside location. At the same time, the expressive design refers to the maritime exhibition inside where soft colours, staggered levels and organic materials in the form of light wood are in becom-ing contrast to the stringent, dynamic and insistent exterior.

Like a large black cube monumental and minimal-ist at the same time the new art museum in Kalmar rises up from the towns beautiful park. The black-glazed wooden facades distinguish the building and at the same time allow it to blend in with the natural surroundings. The dominant features of the exhibition rooms situated with views of the treetops, the sea and the towns old castle are rustic concrete walls and oors and large window sections. The new mu-seum is connected to the parks restaurant, designed by renowned Swedish architect Sven-Ivar Lind in 1939.

The Lundgaard + Tranberg architectural fi rm designed

this groundbreaking edifi ce and based it on a new

sustainable-energy concept that enables the playhouse

to reduce energy consumption by 7585% just on

oped together with Cowi and comprises a wide range of

trail-blazing solutions, such as thermo-active structures

with energy storage, seawater cooling and demand-

driven and mechanical ventilation. Architecturally, the

building comprises three conspicuous primary features:

an oak-plank promenade supported by oblique Venetian

columns encircles the building; a stage tower cladded

    with copper is beautifully mirrored in the water surface;

and a three-storey glass faade conceals cloakrooms

Kannustalos Touch is a prefabricated wooden house

suited for urban areas and sparsely populated rural

environments alike, but it serves equally well as a

modern leisure home, either Finnish-style by the water

or in more exotic landscapes. When designing the

house, renowned Finnish architects Mikko Heikkinen

and Markku Komonen wanted to create a modern

version of the living room of a traditional Finnish farm-

house, a central space that sets the tone of all other

rooms. The house comes in three mutually compatible

downstairs and upstairs versions, offering a total of nine

options with fl oor space between 146 and 186 m.

When interior designer Kirsi Valanti was commissioned

to create furnishings for Touch, she decided to go for a

modern Scandinavian atmosphere by using high-quality

natural materials like wood, linen and paper yarn in a

    light colour scheme.

Outstanding and sustainable new building projects are taking shape throughout Scandinavia. They include museums, hotels, concert halls and cultural centres with new artistic and lyrical dimensions designed by lead-ing architects who thus assist in giving Nordic cities a sustainable new pro le. Based on these many interesting projects, we have chosen to focus this edition on the potential of Scandinavian architecture and to introduce each Nordic country with an example of a striking new edi ce from the country concerned.

A piece of work, for instance, is regard-

ed as sustainable if it leaves our world in more or less the same

condition as it was before the work was car-ried out. Wood is recreated by nature and is an effi cient way to store solar energy, using photosynthesis. Wood sequesters about 1 tonne of CO

2 and releases 0.7 tonnes of

oxygen (O2) for each 1 m of growth.

Wood is a sustainable material: when it is harvested, thus preserving the forests original qualities and values; when it is processed without using need-less energy or chemicals and when taking occupational health and safety into con-

sideration; and whenever it is used

in other products after its original use or for generating energy.

The Danish forestry and wood industries use sustainable manufacturing methods and products. Diligent efforts are also being made in Denmark to discover new ways of using wood as a material. Interdisciplinary collaboration and close relations between knowledge institutions and the business community, facilitated by the Development Centre for Furniture and Wood, ensure innovative approaches to and new projects involving wood. One example of this is the design competition Wood Is Good.

THERE ARE TWO WAYS OF REDUCING CO2 IN OUR ATMOSPHERE: EITHER BY REDUCING EMISSIONS OR BY SEQUESTERING CO2 I.E. REDUCING THE SOURCES OF THE EMISSIONS OR SEQUESTERING THE CARBON TO PREVENT ITS RELEASE INTO THE ATMOSPHERE. WOOD CAN DO BOTH AND IS PROBABLY THE MOST ECO-FRIENDLY RAW MATERIAL AVAILABLE.

Julien De Smedt and Bjarke Ingels two of the biggest talents on the Danish and international architectural scene won the Danish Wood Award in 2008 (Trprisen). They are lauded for their trail-blazing work starting with their fi rm Plot Architects where they crafted their fi rst innovative projects in wood. The duo, each of whom now has his own design studio JDS Architects and BIG respectively are renowned for throwing off the shackles of classic architecture to give free reign to playful and, at times provoca-tive, concepts.

  • Bjarke Ingels modus operandi is driven by ideas, yet he sees no inherent contradic-tion between reason and imagination in his pragmatic, utopian approach to architecture. The young architect, who dares to think big and who manages to communicate his ideas far beyond Denmarks borders, is currently in the process of transforming Copenhagen. At the same time, he is distin-guishing himself through major international assignments that demonstrate his unique ability to work on a large scale.

• Peter Karpf is the fi rst furniture designer to win the Wood Award (Trprisen), which he received for his harrowingly honest furniture in moulded veneer, including the

beautifully moulded chairs Voxia ex Inane, which are folded in several directions out of one piece of veneer. He creates soft, seamless transitions between the surfaces to produce simple pieces of furniture that create spaces within themselves.

the wood award / furniture engaging with the space

Furniture designer Peter Karpf (b. 1940) regards his

moulded wooden chairs as part of the space where

they are placed. The underlying philosophy of the

chairs goes back to humankinds fi rst living space:

    the stone cave.

    a refi ned style

Peter Karpf, one of the most distin-guished representatives of Danish furniture design, has refi ned his style to the utmost through his convincing utilisation of woods potential. As a cabinetmaker, he knows the essence of wood more than anyone, enabling him to work on woods own terms in creating stringently styled pieces of furniture.

Peter Karpf designed the PAN chair for the DJOB

Montana Group. As one of the most distinguished

representatives of Danish furniture design, he has

refi ned his style to the utmost through his convincing

utilisation of woods potential. The chairs name, PAN,

refers to the chairs fl ute-shaped bars forming

    seat and back.

    12

  • Peter Karpf created the Agitari chair for Fredericia Furniture. Paper is an important part of the creative process when Karpf explores the potential of a new shape. Wood and paper are analogous, the designer asserts, as he folds and crumples his way to new forms of expression. Perhaps this is the very secret behind his many innovative yet timeless chairs whose primary purpose is to accentuate the architecture in which they are included.

• New technology developed at the Technological Institute of Denmark makes it possible to build a house accord-ing to the same principle as printing a text. Form is no longer limited by the skill of the tradesman or the poten-tial of the material. Now anything that can be conceived and drawn on a computer can also be built in principle. The technology lets the user be inspired by nature, copy historic architecture or create ones very own sculptural universe. Once the design is created on the computer, the user clicks Build, and the house is built automatically by industrial robots. The new building process is based on the stricter insulation requirements of the future. To avoid thermal bridges and leaky structures, the house is built as an igloo made from insulation material 40 cm thick. A computer-op-erated machine cuts out the house according to the digital model. Electricity, heating, water, ventilation, etc., are integrated. After this, a robot sprays a layer of bre-reinforced concrete over the interior and exterior surfaces.

The house as we know it will soon be a thing of the past. New tech-nology connecting the computer to a number of robots will give free reign to form and imag-ination. The rst house will soon be a reality.

Building a square house requires lots of materials, compared to those

used in double-arched elements. At the same time, the arched shape

has a smaller surface, and thus loses less heat.

The project was implemented as a joint project involving the Technologi-

  • combating global warming

All the while policymakers from all over the world are gathering in Copenhagen from 7 to 18 December to discuss climate change and set new ambitious targets for reducing carbon emissions, Denmark will be the setting for a presentation of new green technology. To optimise Denmarks environmental effort, the Danish State and a number of business organisations have joined forces in a new Climate Consortium Denmark. The aim is to ensure a coordi-nated dissemination of information internationally and nationally about the available knowledge, concepts and technologies offered by Denmarks companies and institutions targeting the reduction of greenhouse gases. To reach a wide audience, Climate Consortium Denmark is collaborating with VisitDenmark to develop Energy Tours offering foreign visitors a number of visits to companies before and during the conference. The idea is to show visitors ef cient technological energy solutions. Another venue for disseminating the stimulating message is a new Internet portal, called EnergyMap.dk which presents an overall view of Danish solutions and research efforts within climate change and energy. At a grassroots level, Climate Consortium Denmark will host National Championships in climate change solu-tions. Everyone may participate in the event by submitting good ideas that tackle the climatic challenges.

Climate change and global warming will be the order of the day when Copenhagen hosts COP15, the UN conference on global warming to be held in December 2009. Ministers and public of cials from 192 countries will convene here to de ne an ambitious, world-wide climate agreement.
