It’s been a very busy couple of months, what with the May Design Series and Clerkenwell Design Week offering up plenty of food for thought for designers everywhere. We review both events in this issue so if you didn’t make

it along to one or other of them, then do check out some our highlights.

This month, we also speak with Doca designer Alex Prades about the thinking behind his designs for the Spanish kitchen manufacturer. There is also lots of inspiration to be had in our case studies this month, which include a beautiful luxury bathroom and an ingenious accessible kitchen design.

And if you have a project that you’re particularly proud of, please note that the deadline for entries for the Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Awards 2013 has been extended. Visit the awards website at www.designerkbawards.co.uk for all the details. Entries close at 5pm on Wednesday 10 July so there’s not long left to ensure you’re in with a chance of winning one of the the industry’s top honours.

I look forward to seeing your entry – good luck!

Architecture Now! Houses, Volume 3 By Philip Jodidio (Taschen)Price: £34.99 ISBN: 978 3 8365 35915

A Traditional Statement

designer | industry news

Books

The third instalment in the popular Architecture Now! Houses series includes 60 of the most dramatic new residences around the world.

Designed by some of the most talented and imaginative architects around, the houses are presented with photos and drawings, alongside the architects’ project lists and addresses – useful perhaps for those who may be tempted to ask Shigeru Ban to design an 800 sq m house on a cliff in Sri Lanka for them.

But even if the chances of working on projects as bold or outlandish as these are few and far between, it’s hard to imagine any designer failing to be inspired by this selection of incredible and truly unique homes.

The Tear Drop shower rose is made from English white china clay inspired by the shape of a single tear. The latest addition to Drummonds’ bathroom range, it is shown here with the Dalby thermostatic shower.

Simple ShoweringAqua-Screen Clear from Impey is a wetroom panel supported by a floor to ceiling pole that is secured in place by a twist and lock mechanism.

It has been designed with ease of installation in mind – there is no need to cut the pole to the required length as it has a 2027mm to 2700mm adjustment so it can be adjusted to the correct height and locked in place.

The base of the pole is anchored using Tigerfix, an alternative solution that secures the pole without using screws or drilling into tiled flooring which would damage the waterproofing membrane.

Q - What is the key to increasing footfall on Britain’s High Streets?Liz Sparkes, Designer and Owner, Glassification, Taunton: I personally feel that High Streets need a BIG helping hand, not least in making it affordable to lease premises, as well as solving parking issues. When I visit my local mall, there doesn’t seem to be any shortage of people wanting a real, rather than an online shopping experience!

But that I think is the key – shopping is more and more a leisure activity. We have to make High Streets more enjoyable, and one way to do that would be to encourage more small independent retailers, leaving the chains out of town.

Now granted, in our industry, it’s relatively unusual for someone to pop out for a browse round the shops and to come home with a new kitchen or bathroom, but if we are visible on that fun day out, and we set ourselves apart from the everyday, then we too could plant a seed, and become a destination not only when the time is right but actually being part of that process MAKING the right time.

Gary Milligan, CEO, Federation of Kitchen & Bathroom Designers: Given the competition from the Internet

today, we need to be making hands-on shopping more attractive, and although I can also enjoy basking in nostalgia and remembering the good old High Street, businesses need to be realistic and pragmatic. There is little point in locating somewhere just to maintain a tradition – truthfully there is little profit in that, and shops exist to make profit.

I think High Street shopping is finished. I believe it’s time to stop wasting resources on trying to rebuild something which cannot be sustained. I’m all for refurbishing our High Streets but it is time to think outside the box.

John Murray, Director, Alaris UK, Aberdeen: I am a retailer of kitchens and bathrooms and for us the High Street is hopeless as customers tend to spend several hours with us and so parking is the biggest problem. People fill up shopping mall car parks because that is the best place to park so why not shop there. People tend to go to the High Street for the occasional interesting shop but if it’s a bad weather day, it’s out of the question.

Unless we have easy access to High Streets – as well as pedestrian areas to make them a more relaxing place to be – then I don’t see what the future holds for High Street retail.

Kitchen retail franchise In-toto has reported a 16% year-on-year increase in retail sales for the first quarter of 2013, with overall sales also up by 13%.

With three new retail showrooms soon to open in Bath, Oxford and Clitheroe (Ribble Valley) bringing the total to 48, In-toto Managing Director Jonathon Wagstaff, said he is delighted with how the company is progressing.

He believes the success is down to the performances of the current franchisees across the country combined with the brand’s contemporary and traditional ranges and design expertise.

“The focus has been on the activities, event and local communications

from within the In-toto stores,” said Wagstaff. “Lots more of our franchises are doing activities and demonstrations and letting customers know what is going on and we’ve also put more into the presentation of the showrooms.”He added that the investment in a new concept store in Oadby, Leicester, has also proved hugely beneficial to support the franchise network through training, product and range testing and by monitoring consumer trends.

“Our great start to 2013 shows we are going in the right direction and will continue to push forward to make sure the rest of the year follows suit.”

A Castello bath provided the centrepiece for the scheme

As part of the brief for the interior design of an expansive modern home, the client requested that the existing master suite be transformed into something truly exceptional. Interior design studio Cabellero, based in London’s Knightsbridge, designed a complete suite that spanned four rooms comprising of the main bedroom, dressing room, private lounge and a glorious bathroom.

Stone basins with Keuco mirror cabinets above are located on each side of the bath

The client’s brief for the bathroom was that it should be luxurious yet contemporary, and whilst ultimately a calming space, it should be far from bland. A Castello freestanding bath was selected to be the focal point for the room and its curves were then traced by a striking elliptical wall tiled with a pearlescent Bisazza mosaic. Whilst not only providing a dramatic feature, when a relaxed light setting is chosen, the overhead fittings dim down while other concealed fittings illuminate causing the glass mosaic wall to glimmer and provide the perfect ambience for a relaxing bathing experience.

For its dual qualities of soft white undertones along with dark prominent veining, Arabescata marble was specified to line the remaining surfaces. Obtaining the perfect finish from a marble with such pronounced

veining is extremely difficult because standard sized tiles will leave the veining cut short and mismatched along the grout lines. For total control of the finish quality, individual marble slabs were selected from Italy and then laid in a bookmatched pattern, providing an unbroken tapestry of elegant veining.

His and hers stone basins with Keuco mirror cabinets above are symmetrically positioned to each side of the bath, whilst to the reverse of the mosaic feature wall is a steam shower with a cantilevered marble seat. Within the enclosure there are also dual rain showerheads operated by chrome Dornbracht Mem controls.

Hot TopicHobs occupy a prominent position in any kitchen. We asked appliance manufacturers for an insight on the factors that they believe are turning up the heat in this market…

Flavia MedeirosProduct Training Manager Euroline Sales & Marketing

Induction’s main selling points are its flat and easy-to-clean design and its performance, energy efficiency and excellent safety record. All of these qualities go towards making it a real viable alternative to gas, especially in terms of its functionality, which makes it a must in every appliance manufacturer’s portfolio.

Consumers are mainly looking for power, controllability and energy efficiency in their hobs; induction meets all of these demands.

Induction does actually have very similar cooking qualities to gas but with the added attraction of the flush and clean aesthetics. These clean aesthetics are further enhanced by the fantastic safety

and energy saving benefits; induction is cool to the touch, and incredibly energy efficient.

Offering an unrivalled level of precision and control at one’s finger tips, gas remains the nation’s favourite fuel type for hobs.

No longer dated and old-fashioned, the look of the traditional gas hob has been entirely revolutionized, giving rise to a whole new generation of models that can enhance

the style of any contemporary kitchen setting. As well as offering touch control operation and/or easy-to-clean gas-on-glass finishes for a sleeker look, the new models comes in a range of sizes, including extra wide 112cm designs that can provide a side-by-side 4 burner configuration to ensure easy and simultaneous access to all the hob zones. The latest models also come

equipped with cutting-edge hob technology, such as individual electronic timers for each of the zones, residual heat indicators to warn if any of the burners remain too hot to touch in the immediate post-heating period and slow-cook functions to infuse flavour into a dish and safeguard its tenderness.

Even at entry level, there are copious technological advantages to induction hobs over other surface cooking models. They are double the speed of gas, highly controllable and energy efficient whilst being safe and easy to clean.

As the market for domestic induction hobs continues to expand, it has also diversified and the latest generation of products feature zoneless cooking options. Since the launch of the De Dietrich Continuum models, a number of

manufacturers have followed suit and include hobs with zoneless capability in their ranges.

The latest trend for induction hobs is for those that perfectly colour co-ordinate with the entire family of

cooking appliances, as exemplified by the Continuum models in the De Dietrich Premium Collection, which are featured in Grey Pearl, White Pearl and Black Pearl colourways.

Consumers are demanding flexibility in the kitchen so hobs with multi-purpose functions that make a design statement without compromising on performance tick all the boxes.

Hotpoint’s new Luce Multiplo hob is part of a range of 45cm hobs that also includes teppanyaki, induction, gas and BBQ variations.

The unique Multiplo cooking vessel offers five types of cooking – steaming, roasting, deep frying, slow cooking and boiling – along with dual induction zones. All its dishwasher-safe cooking accessories are supplied and can be neatly stored away within the wipe clean unit.

Induction hobs are increasing their market share, and are certainly beginning to threaten the ever-popular gas hob. The sleekness of style and beautiful looks of induction are an attraction for the consumer seeking to make their kitchen a desirable home. Induction hobs offer rapid, very efficient and economical cooking and we believe their popularity will increase year on year.

Consumers are looking for versatile and flexible hobs that not only offer the very best in design,

but also deliver professional results at home and are simple to use. The smooth surface and extremely low profile of an induction hob makes it ideal for modern kitchen designs, so that protrusions on the work surface are kept to a minimum. The clean lines and touch controls of induction hobs complement the clutter free fascias of the latest built-in ovens and contemporary kitchen furniture, and they come in an array of shapes and sizes.

Induction hobs are proving more popular in line with the kitchen becoming the heart of the home where open-plan schemes are leading the way. Team this with a wok hob for the best of both worlds with one sleek platform on which to cook in front of family and friends.

A combined of induction and wok hob will not take up much cabinet space and the user can experience exceptional cooking control, making this first choice for those who enjoy

experimenting with new dishes in the kitchen using a variety of cooking methods.

Wok hobs are also great for dinner parties for stir-frying in front of guests and will produce consistently speedy cooking results. Induction hobs will deliver fast healthy cooked meals at very high temperatures without much fat or oil.

Manufacturers are expanding the number of induction hobs in their ranges due to their growing popularity and consumer demand. However, induction sales are still smaller than the other fuel types but are growing steadily.

Consumers have some understanding of the benefits but there is some way to go until they are fully accepted. They are looking for powerful zones with the flexibility of a number of settings to allow bespoke selection according to the type of food being cooked. With escalating energy prices, we

can expect to see more brands introducing induction models with low energy settings for when time is not critical.

600mm wide is likely to remain the most popular size with interest in 90cm and modular 30cm wide units growing. Black glass will remain the expectation of the consumer and is obviously the most practical. Colour accents, such as the graphic controls on the Smeg Marc Newson designed range offer a real point of difference and make a strong design statement.

Smeg | www.smeguk.com

Gas hobs still make up a large share of our hob sales. Generally, they remain the most purchased hob style, as many consumers still prefer the visible flame, especially those who love to cook. Furthermore, with the increased interest in Asian-style cooking, there has been a growing need for models with a powerful gas burner, in larger configurations than previously desired.

While every consumer is different, there are some key demands that are applicable to most. Many consumers desire a hob that blends in with the other appliances in their kitchen, perhaps through a matching design or finish, yet still looks eye-catching on its own.

As a necessary cooking appliance, consumers want to ensure they get the most out of their hob. Smart functions like pot detection on full surface induction hobs provide the consumer with flexible all over cooking areas, eliminating the restriction of traditional specific zones.

Large TFT (thin transistor film) touch displays lets consumers

interact with the appliance more smoothly, for precise and advanced control of the cooking zones. Consumers are more energy conscious than ever, and are looking for a hob that does not waste heat or energy, plus helping to save them money.

Gas hobs have largely retained their popularity as we have seen new technologies in the market, such as induction hobs, grow at the expense of electric hobs rather than gas. Indeed induction is an area of the home appliance market that has seen considerable innovation and growth in recent years, driven by the introduction of alternative hob layouts and flexible cooking zones.

Consumers are increasingly looking for flexibility when buying; there is a real demand for hobs that can keep up with the busy nature of modern life. Additionally consumer knowledge of this product area has grown and we really believe that this market is one which will continue to grow.

With induction technology becoming more popular in the UK, we are constantly looking for ways to enhance its induction cooking range. Flexibility is definitely key in consumer’s minds when they are searching for a hob. Consumers are looking for products that really make a difference to their lifestyle.

The new style Neff Induction hobs allow the user to place pans anywhere they choose on the surface, whether that’s using several small pans or one large one they have the

ultimate flexibility and the hob can fit their needs.Consumers have a variety of control options, one being the precise Point & Twist control which is a sleek bevelled dial which uses a magnet to attach to the hob. To use, simply ‘point’ at the area you require by dipping the dial, and ‘twist’ to rotate through the selection of power settings. When not in use, the dial can be simply removed, leaving a smooth surface for cleaning and a stunning finish.

British manufacturers are good at taking generic European trends and translating them into designs desirable for the British market – a concept that German and Italian producers can find difficult. Consumers are more aware of British-made products and recognise signs of quality, for example, colour coordinated cabinetry like ours, a hallmark of quality British kitchens.

Local manufacturers are skilled at creating ‘signature looks’ and creating classical designs, something consumers are looking for. We’re outstanding in our design presentation to the UK mass market,

even down to the handles we offer which outshine European options. Traditional joinery and carpentry techniques are what the British do well, appealing to the native audience. German manufacturers factory produce in volume, bringing restrictions for creating some of the unique iconic pieces that the British make so well. The UK consumer is certainly more savvy in their search for a unique, individual statement kitchen that isn’t mass produced, but built here on home ground and with real heart and soul.

At Samuel Heath, everything is done in-house from design and tooling, to machining and electro-plating; we even reprocess our waste water. This gives us flexibility and total control over the quality and availability of our products. It’s a process that consumers can trust and it’s encouraging to see that Birmingham is still able to produce some of the best bathroom fittings and ironmongery in the world. As British manufacturers, we have strong sense of responsibility for the environment. We’re under the strictest controls in regards to our emissions and effluent control, we’ve worked hard to minimize our environmental impact by recycling our waste and we’re proud to source our brass from a supplier just eight miles away. British consumers are increasingly concerned about the provenance of the products they are buying, which is why we are seeing more consumers backing British brands.

Silverdale Bathrooms is one of the few remaining bathroom ceramic manufacturers producing in the UK today. We design and produce all the ceramic we sell in the UK and, wherever possible, source our materials, components and accessories from premium quality suppliers and manufacturers across the UK.

Our ceramic and sanitaryware ranges are all manufactured using only the finest china clay from Cornwall and premium Silica from Cheshire to ensure the ultimate quality and finish and to promote our product as genuinely made in Britain.

We champion the ‘Made in Britain’ campaign as it ensures that the potters skill set continues as a trade in the UK. We know that the quality we produce cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world as each piece continues to be individually handmade, critical to achieve the detailing required, especially on our BC Sanitan designs, our traditional brand.

The BC Sanitan product is appreciated across the world by customers looking to buy traditional British design that is actually made in Britain in quality vitrified china. As a British designer and manufacturer, one of the key changes we have seen around enclosures is design flexibility – that one size certainly doesn’t fit all. Specifiers, designers and consumers want to be able to create a design finish which is tailored to their needs. Buying a product which has been manufactured in this country allows that flexibility.

Our new range, which is launching this month, presents a high specification ‘off-the-shelf’ solution, but with a variety of design options, where you can choose different hinges, handles or bracing and install either to tray or floor, to suit your needs. They are elegant hardware options with a distinctively British twist.

It was the late Seventies when a British designer began the revolution in kitchen styling, guiding us away from the geometric shapes of the ‘Frankfurt Kitchen’ created by Austrian architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky in the late 1920s and focused on efficiency of manufacture and use.

Mark Wilkinson started the move into bespoke furniture at the top of the market, with his English Country Kitchen. He featured previously freestanding, dresser style pieces in Pine and included what have become classic British furniture features such as the Fishtail Frieze, Multi-Panel door and Clover motif.

The kitchen became the heart of the British home, it was much more than a work area and instead of being made in highly mechanised factories, a growing number of small joinery manufacturers in the UK joined the revolution to supply the English Country kitchen originated by Wilkinson.

The latest style of furniture by Mark Wilkinson, is the Newlyn kitchen, inspired by the work of the Newlyn artists and the culture of the Cornish fishing community. The example shown is in randomly selected walnut.

“Light materials were used throughout to create a continuity of colour and style”

infoDenise Hepburn | www.denisehepburn.comC.P. Hart | www.cphart.co.uk

This new build project is the home of interior design Denise Hepburn. The master ensuite measures 3m x 4.10m and, while the room is not extremely small in size, it isn’t as large as many master ensuites would tend to be. As a result, the brief that Hepburn set – and worked on with Lynne Wainwright of C.P. Hart Contracts – was to create a very clean and neutral scheme to provide as much space as possible.

In order to achieve this, the specified products for the bathroom were very streamlined, such as the Raindance showerhead and the contemporary wall-hung Puravida WC. Light materials were used, such as the stone used throughout the bathroom on the floor, the walls, as well as on the cabinetry drawer surfaces, to create a continuity of colour and style.

Wainwright says: “Given that the brief was for a clutter-free, streamlined space using design-led products on a tight

budget, the Axor Starck shower valve and Raindance Rainmaker were ideal.

“The Puravida wall mounted pan and Grohe Cosmopolitan skate plate were chosen for ease of maintenance as no additional access panels were required.”

Hepburn’s favourite aspect of the project is the bath as she says it is incredibly comfortable and creates a real focal point in the room. The LED lights underneath the bath add an extra sense of space and drama to the room.

The building process was straightforward and the design of the bathroom wasfully concluded before the building workstarted in order to avoid any complications further down the line. Hepburn was keen to show style, function and value for money with this master ensuite, proving that a modern bathroom with clean and simple lines can be achieved on a limited budget.

The Future’s Green…A new report calls for action on energy labelling and selling the ‘energy efficiency message’ to consumers…

Global Action Plan | www.globalactionplan.org.uk

Plotting the Course for a Lower Energy FutureGlobal Action Plan’s ‘Watts in the Kitchen’ report makes a number of key recommendations that it believes could help drive the sale of energy efficient appliances:

• Retailers should come together to create consistent information displayed on home appliances that show running costs and energy efficiency as a feature. This would sit independently from the EU label to be UK-specific.

• Evidence shows that subsidies at point of sale increase the market share of more efficient white goods. The government should explore the cost effectiveness of this option, potentially using the Green Deal, ECO or as part of the Energy Bill.

• Retailers, manufacturers and government should join forces prior to the next review of the EU label to reach agreement on any proposed change to the grading system. The aim is to ensure that energy labels are simple and easy to understand so that consumers can compare the energy efficiency of different models and make an informed choice of which to buy.

Understanding consumer purchasing decisions is one of the key obstacles to ensuring increased sales of energy efficient household appliances, according to BSH Home Appliances CEO Michael Steinle.

BSH brands Bosch and Siemens has worked with campaign group Global Action Plan to publish a report to highlight the impact that more efficient domestic appliances could have on energy usage, as well as to explore what is stopping consumers from buying these products.

Steinle said: “Working with Global Action Plan has given us some very valuable insight into the barriers to the uptake of super-efficient appliances in the UK. The report highlights many points, in particular the impact we, as a consumer base could have on carbon emissions whilst benefiting the environment and reducing our energy costs.”

In the UK, domestic use accounts for nearly a third of all electricity consumption – with 42% of that being used to power white goods. If all UK consumers who bought an A rated fridge-freezer in 2011 had instead bought an A+++ appliance instead, households would have saved £24million and 100,000 tonnes of carbon in one year.

Steinle added: “The independent approach that GAP have taken has allowed us to look at the industry and consumer behaviour in a factual and impartial way which will benefit the way we speak to our customers and

information we pass on to our partners.”

The number of domestic appliances in UK households is increasing – with an average of 41 electrical products now in each home. Yet super-efficient white goods only account for 30% of sales because of a lack of consumer information. The report suggests that many people do not realise that rapid technological improvements mean that the most energy efficient goods are no longer rated as A+, and have in fact been replaced with A +++ under the EU’s current labelling system.

Global Action Plan CEO Trewin Restorick said: “Domestic appliances currently account for 42% of household energy use – but insufficient labelling and a lack of consumer information means customers and the environment are paying the price. We need to make it as easy as possible for consumers to make informed choices when buying new appliances.”

designer | clerkenwell design week

Despite still being in its infancy, Clerkenwell Design Week is starting to feel like a well-established event that is gaining in importance on the annual design calendar

40pg

With flashes of pink signage dotted around the streets of Clerkenwell, visitors were led on a trail of some of the most interesting design-related showrooms in the country during the recent Clerkenwell Design Week.

Back for its 4th year, the event stretches across a wide area around Farringdon and Clerkenwell on the outskirts of the City. One of the hubs of the action is the Farmiloe Building, a Victorian former glassworks that provides a superb backdrop for cutting-edge design ideas.

Lighting, seating and other furniture was on show throughout the four floors of the building in an environment that creates quite a buzz. It’s a feeling that was replicated out on the streets too, with a trail of visitors wandering from one showroom to another. It has that exciting sense of exploration that visitors to Milan’s Zona Tortona would be familiar with – but without the uncomfortably crowded streets!

Also worth a visit was the House of Detention, an old Victorian prison tucked away in Clerkenwell’s back streets. It is a rare chance to visit an intriguing building which featured different various exhibitors in each of the individual prison cells.

Out on the main streets, there was a wide choice of destinations out of the many showrooms in the area. Bathroom brands Toto and Bagno Design were among the locations opening their doors, along with a host of high profile furniture labels including Alias, Capellini, Vitra, Porcelanosa and Poltrona Frau.

The extensive series of showroom events and seminar talks perhaps placed greater emphasis on design in the workplace than any other areas of interior design, but nonetheless, there was still much inspiration to be had for those with more of an interest in residential projects. i

“The key is to not mix too many colours together, but try and create a uniformed space with a natural blend of materials and colour”

Creative BlendArchitectural principles and an understanding of modern lifestyle trends are the influences that underpin Alex Prades’ design work for kitchen brand Doca…

www.designerkbmag.co.uk

designer | interview

DESIGNER: Where do you find inspiration for your own design ideas?ALEX PRADES: Architecture is a fundamental influence to my design inspiration; in fact I would say it underlines all I design. For me, there is an art and science to the study of buildings and physical structures which I find fascinating. I have transferred this same practice to my furniture designs, ensuring I connect the design and construction to its built environment, which I think is the customer and interior space.

Another focus of inspiration for me comes from the different elements found in nature. By studying the different shapes, as well as reacting to the feelings certain places evoke, give me new concepts I can convey in my designs.

DESIGNER: How many designers work in Doca’s design department (internal or external) and what are the main stages in product development?PRADES: The Design Team is managed by Jose Luis Castells, Co-Owner of Doca. Jose’s official title is the Head Director of the Design Department and Art Manager. The design team is formed and managed by both Jose and I.

Doca is active in the attendance of exhibitions to ensure we stay abreast of the changing kitchen furniture market which ultimately dictates our market share and successful client base. Continued communication between us and our suppliers is key to our development as this helps us remain up-to-date with the latest materials, finishes, MFC designs, veneers and lacquer finishes.

In addition, we routinely survey an exhaustive selection of materials to ensure brand exclusivity and the utmost quality to our portfolio. I personally need to find something that is superior to what we already have or it won’t be considered. For example, when we want to create a new design of cut out handle, we start by doing basic drawings of different shapes to find the best possible design. The next step is to compile technical plans to then discuss directly with the factory managers. Everybody is involved in this process to achieve the most efficient design; manufacture does not yield the same results as a plan or drawing!

At this stage, several prototypes and quality tests are performed to ensure the product meets all set industry standards and once everything is acceptable, we begin the introduction of the new model. i

Alex Prades is a Designer at Spanish kitchen manufacturer Doca: “Design has always been a passion and in my early years, having studied in Vinaròs, Spain, it was a refreshing change to expand my knowledge at the University Jaume, Castellon, where I completed a Technical Engineering course concentrating exclusively on Industrial Design.

I later enrolled in The Erasmus Programme at Salford University in Manchester, where I studied a variety of different design-oriented subjects all referencing the manufacturer of furniture in an industrial way. To further advance my studies I also sought training in a variety of design disciplines, such as illumination, industrial and interior design, making my skill-set one that adapts and changes trends, rather than adhere to them.

As a qualified Technical Engineer in Industrial Design, I started my career in a top furniture shop called Toscana in Vinaròs. The experience I gained from working there – selling quality brands like Foscarini, Arketipo, Artemide, Flos, and Verardo – was the foundation and start to my brand, product and designer knowledge. I then joined Doca and have been with the company for five years.”

“The open-plan lifestyle has definitely influenced how we design our kitchen furniture, leading us to explore and refine different concealment options”www.designerkbmag.co.uk

DESIGNER: What key products have you been working on at Doca and what else is in the pipeline?PRADES: Nowadays the trend is for handleless kitchen furniture, so to meet the demand we have designed a selection of models with an integrated handless system. But as I said before, adhering to trends is not my style so we are always trying to innovate with new designs and styles of handle. A great example of this is Doca’s pioneering ‘Milano System’ which is a handless system using a selection of different styled metallic profiles.

The latest design we have produced is the metallic profile ‘R’ which allows for a bevelled edge to seamlessly run between the worktop and door/drawer unit. Doca’s cut-out handle ELIA partners this new profile perfectly as it creates an almost invisible cut-out handle that still offers easy opening and doesn’t sacrifice the final aesthetic.

Another area to furniture design we’re exploring are the new options available for LED lighting, opening mechanisms, original materials and slimmer door thicknesses, to name a few. Effectively we monitor the market all the time to find the latest innovations we feel could become a valuable asset to our portfolio.

DESIGNER: How big an influence has open-plan

living been on kitchen design for Doca over the last few years?PRADES: Understanding the requirements of your client and then successfully developing that concept into a finished product that fulfils or even exceeds those wants, is the cardinal rule in design – it’s paramount. I say this because in my opinion, the kitchen has always been seen as the ‘heart of the home’ but with the world unable to slow down, more emphasis is being placed towards the trend for open-plan living allowing the kitchen to influence other spaces in the home and transform the identity of a room. This lifestyle has definitely influenced how we design our kitchen furniture, leading us to explore and refine different concealment options such as pocket-door systems and integrated hoods for greater aesthetic appeal.

My aim is design a kitchen that is ergonomic, offering quality furniture design and functionality without looking like a kitchen. This will mean that such a design can be transcended throughout other rooms in the home.

DESIGNER: How has the material mix in kitchen design changed in recent years? What combinations do you think are particularly strong?PRADES: In previous years, I have found that our clients

liked to blend a broad mix of colours in their kitchens, with some erring towards a kitchen made of two and even three different wood veneers. Nowadays, more reserve is taken when combining a selection of different materials as greater emphasis has been placed on achieving a cohesive and visually striking aesthetic. Sense and caution are wise when designing for this key trend especially as if we did blend different materials, the chosen finishes would need to be completely different. For example, I could design a kitchen with a white lacquer island that is complemented by a table finished in dark veneer and mirrored kitchen cabinetry. The key is to not mix too many colours together, but try and create a uniformed space with a natural blend of materials and colour.

DESIGNER: What do you see for the future of kitchen design – are there any particular trends that you see emerging? PRADES: The future of kitchen design is looking very positive, because with the kitchen now seen as an integral part of the home, both design and social trends continue to play to this unlocked culture. With international travel, global cuisine, cookery programmes and the demand for a social hub in the home, the kitchen has become a ‘do-it-all’ room. Therefore for me and Doca, it is especially important

that the design of such a space offers innovative design, high functionality and premium quality. If these three elements are achieved during the consultation stage then the client is more likely to commit to your design and invest in a kitchen with greater substance and higher level of quality.

When it comes to emerging trends, I have to say our highly contemporary light and dark kitchen series remain a popular choice, playing to our clientele that want to create maximum impact in an open space. Our natural veneer effects featured in the Nordic Series are a great example of how Doca has taken note of growing trends, with the series clearly taking its influence from the revival for Scandinavian inspired interiors.

Also drawing on my industrial design background, it is great to see a demand for an untraditional mix of materials allowing Doca to present features like its Supermirror door, fabricated from steel yet finished with a mirror effect. The key to our growing range of MFC, laminates and veneer finishes is down to the original features and natural effects we achieve. Big grains, natural knots, sawn textures and varying shades are synonymous with the natural elements of wood, and Doca creates authentic kitchen furniture with the very same natural characteristics. i

“We spend every day designing and installing amazing kitchens. To give something back like this and to see the enormous benefit of what we have done for a vital project makes every other day even more worthwhile”

Child’s PlayA kitchen should always be built around the needs of its users, but it takes a high level of creativity to make sure the space both looks good and is easy to use for those with specific needs…

Ergonomics are important in any kitchen design of course, but perhaps nowhere more so than in a centre for disabled children and young people where the need for well-considered, accessible design is paramount.

Kitchens International was approached by the BBC DIY SoS ‘Children in Need’ programme to see if they could quickly transform the kitchen at The Yard, the only indoor and outdoor adventure play centre for disabled children and young people in the east of Scotland.

KI’s involvement saw it supply a highly accessible kitchen design to suit the specific needs of centre users. The brief was to create a disabled friendly kitchen complete with appliances that would be state-of-the-art for both able bodied and disabled users. The kitchen is a multi-functional area for both food preparation, dining, socialising and entertaining and is in constant use.

The chief designer on the project was Carol Cameron and she wanted to create a multi-use kitchen that was barrier-free. A Callerton Abstract kitchen was chosen and a key element of the design is an island which has dual zones for wheelchair use and which also contains a dining table where people could sit and prepare food and also eat. To achieve this, a special wheelchair access was created on one side of the island. The units are all hard wearing and multipurpose for this type of facility.

Around the walls of the kitchen are units that have easy access. A full sized sink is located on a white painted steel worktop unit that can move up and down almost a metre, either manually or by an electric switch depending on the person using it so a wheelchair user can lower the unit for easy use.

On the same moveable worksurface is a hob, allowing the same ease of access for all heights of

users. Similarly, above the sink is a wall unit that moves up and down to allow easy access at whatever height.

Another special feature is the side opening doors on some of the appliances giving easier access for wheelchair users. A wheelchair user has a range of movement of about 630mm so the kitchen had to have access at this height and also allowed for room under the sink for the wheelchair to go into.

The reaction of the users when they saw the new facilities was mind blowing with superlatives flowing as they couldn’t believe their eyes: “Is it real?” and “It’s magical” are just some of the comments. Most of The Yard children and helpers had never seen or used a kitchen so dedicated to their needs, which Cameron says made the whole project even more worthwhile.

The build took ten days with the kitchen just one part of a huge makeover involving over 300 people and which transformed both the

building and outdoor play area. Steven Boal, Kitchens International Project Manager, said that although the days were long and the work demanding, it was a humbling experience and very rewarding. He described it as a “fantastic example of how different trades can work together to achieve amazing results”.

The programme, which was aired late last year, showed how the dilapidated buildings at the centre were completely refurbished in a very short time to give disable children a new-look day care centre at no cost to The Yard.

Paul O’Brien, Director at Kitchens International, said: “We spend every day designing and installing amazing kitchens. To give something back like this and to see the enormous benefit of what we have done for a small and vital project makes every other day even more worthwhile. We are delighted to have been involved and thanks to all the team for their efforts.”

Superstar DJDesigner Karim Rashid illuminated the second day of the event, with an inspirational keynote speech to a packed seminar theatre. Drawing without the biggest crowd of the Conversation Series, Rashid spoke about the changing world around us and its evolution from an analog past to a digital future.

He urged the audience to open their minds to thinking in a totally new way, without depending on references to the past: “Design should not at all be about looking back, it’s about looking forward. If I look just at examples of past designs, there is a chance that what I then create is not a new idea, but it is in fact just derivative.”

He added that this is largely about visualising ideas in a different way to the established norms: “In the last 7 years, I’ve not designed anything in 2D. Designers should always see the world in 3D.”

He explained that just as 2D designs have helped shaped our 3D environment, designing in 3D will take us further still. “If we design in 3D, we will shape the 4th dimensional world – shaping the human experience.”

Rashid – who rounded off his day at ExCel showing off his skills on the deck with a full DJ set – believes there is much progress to be made with some of the objects around us that we all take for granted. “The refrigerator is a pathetic archetype. It’s a box that has lots of space that for the most part is largely unused.” Designers, he says, “must think about how they can change these archetypes for the better.”

Whilst Rashid’s work is sometimes seen to straddle the boundaries between art and design, it is having a meaningful impact on users’ lives that he wants for his designs. “I don’t want my chairs in some museum – I want them in everybody’s homes. Designing is about shaping people’s experiences and giving them a better life.”

specifically to allow the trade to customise a box specifically for their own use and product range.

The E-Box, so called because of its electric motor enabling it to lift a full 15kg, benefits from truly vast proportions (146 x 558 x 560mm). This means that almost any heavy weight kitchen / family room application can be catered for to include extra large TV’s, computer screens, shelf storage or coffee centres as illustrated.

How often do we tire from the work space limiting clutter on our kitchen worktops? How much time do we lose emptying drawers and cabinets looking for the correct cooking implement? So it was a great day in British kitchen design history when Cardinal Innovations Ltd came up with the now double award winning S-Box.

Utilising the otherwise wasted space to be found behind a base cabinet or within an island unit, the S-Box ‘pop up’ vertical drawer boxes give you everything you require immediately to hand at the push of a finger. Additional power sockets, kitchen knives, cooking spices, weighing scales – even TV’s and wireless sound systems for entertainment purposes are all available

They always say that the simple ideas are the best. Nothing could epitomise this philosophy more than the S-Box and E-Box range of products from Yorkshire based Cardinal Innovations Ltd

plus many more applications. When not in use, the S-Box can simply be pushed back down to give a clutter free worktop.

Launched at KBB London 2013, was the latest evolution of their kitchen / family room sound system S-Box for Bose replacing their earlier smart phone docking systems. Premium sound quality, bluetooth connectivity with any smart phone or tablet as well as the flexibility and removable speaker option, make the S-Box for Bose ideal for when the dinner party spills out into the garden on those long summer nights.

Also launched at KBB London was Cardinal Innovations E-Box. Designed

The dishwasher is slowly becoming an essential appliance in the kitchen as its value as an efficient and effective household product increases. The dishwasher is a great investment thanks to the long-term water and energy savings it offers when compared to washing up by hand, which can typically use 40 to 104 litres. The modern dishwasher can use as little as six litres of water per cycle, save valuable time and keep worktops mess free.

The building regulations for new homes demand water consumption to be within certain parameters, and the dishwasher is the ideal appliance to keep water usage to a minimum. Dishwasher technology has

improved dramatically over the last few years, resulting in greater resource-saving. Some dishwashers feature intelligent technology too, which will automatically adjust the programme time and temperature according to the level of soiling, offering savings on water, energy and time without compromising on performance.

The kitchen has become the hub of the home with its emergence into the living space, and it is now a place for socialising and entertaining, and so appliances must maximise free time, reduce running costs and daily chores, making the dishwasher an invaluable appliance.

Manufacturers are investing heavily into their dishwasher range, affording the kitchen designer and consumer a wide choice of models, and one that is sure to be a perfect match for the home.

He was recruited by Duncan Marr, who retired as MD early last year, and who exclusively introduced the Franke brand to the UK, famously starting the business in his garage.

Hide & Slide Oven by NeffThere are few product categories with such rapid product development as the oven. With innovations in capacity, digital controls and cooking function, the evolutionary process has sometimes bordered on revolutionary.

Neff’s Hide & Slide door certainly changed the user experience. The door pulls down smoothly and is stored under the oven cavity, giving better access to the oven – a feature that comes into its own particularly in smaller kitchens and any installation where good accessibility is key.

First launched in 2002 as the Slideaway oven, but redesigned with a new fascia last year and renamed Hide & Slide, it now also features soft close to give this clever user-focused creation an even more polished and easy-to-use feel.
