BOR13199 DesBlock_QLD_AW 29/1/08 5:03 PM Page 3
Boral Masonry has been supplying coloured and texturedblocks for over 25 years to the Australian architecturalcommunity. The colour palette has been developed in consultation with designers and offers a broad and co-ordinated range. The colour palette provides theflexibility of many colour combinations essential for the popular composite building styles that requirevarying finishes and materials.
In addition the Designer Block™ range now utilises the latestpre-sealing technology to reduce water absorption, and hencereduce the possibility of efflorescence, mould or mildewstaining. To be effective, Designer Block™product must be laid in mortar containing Boral’s recommended additive.

*Designer Block™ Colours and Textures – Queensland
Colours
Smooth Face A finely texturedfinish created through the standardmoulding process.
Shot-Blast Face This process subtlyexposes the aggregates, producinga weathered, sawn stone-like finish.
Honed Face The honing process grinds2-3mm from the block surface, producinga matt exposed-aggregate finish.
Polished Face This involves producing a denser block which is honed and thenbuffed. Polishing enriches the colour of
the aggregates. The finely finished polishedsurface is ideal for feature walls, trims and banding.
Split Face The splitting process produces a bold textured, exposed aggregate finish.
Five Innovative Textures
The products marked by an asterix are stock colours and textures available. All other colours and textures are made to order.
Lead time and mould make up fees apply to made to order products and large orders. See back page for additional information.

Mortar Additive
For the Boral Designer Block™ pre-sealing technology to be effective, the mortar specification MUST include Boral Designer Block™ Mortar Additive. Use off white cement and appropriate oxide to match selected block colour.
Block Laying
When core filling Designer Block™ walls, some seepage may occur due to high hydrostatic pressure.Ensure it is cleaned off before it dries, otherwise staining will occur. It is essential that the blockwork is kept clean from mortar smears. This will eliminate the need for aggressive acid basedcleaning solutions which can damage the face or change the colour of the concrete blocks.

Designer Block™ Additional Information
1. External Designer Block™ walls should be laid with Designer Block™Mortar Additive in accordance with AS3700.2. Blocks must be kept dry on site before use and when laid. Freshlylaid walls must be covered overnight and when rain interrupts work in order to prevent moisture entering the cores of the blocks.3. Do not put mortar on the web of the blocks.4. Ensure that perpends are buttered on each side with a void in themiddle. The mortar joints should be well ironed to provide a tightsealed joint.
5. Ensure mortar smears are removed before mortar sets as acidcleaning later can discolour the masonry.6. It is important that retaining walls have good drainage behind the wall.7. For non-grouted masonry, a horizontal weep hole at the floor jointof each core should be provided to drain water that may be trappedinside the blocks. Partially fill the bottom course blocks with 20mmblue metal or similar drainage material to prevent mortar droppingsfrom blocking the weep holes.
