Fixture for the Decam Imager

Decam Imager: ~1,300 lbs. Center of the gravity: ~8.63” from the edge of the back

cover flange.

View of the Fixture connects with the Imager together

Main function of the Fixture:

• Supports the Imager;

• Disconnects the Imager from the telescope;

• Moves the Imager to the designated location.

Page 3: Design the Moving and Handling Fixture for the DECAM Imager Edward Chi Fermilab November 17, 2008

3

Main Design Criteria of the Fixture

• Retrofits the existing Imager design configuration and the usage of the existing equipments.

• The size, weight and the configuration of the fixture must consider the availability of operation.

• Meets the applicable codes for a structurally sound design.

• Minimizes the material, fabrication and other design related cost and time.

Half circle angle shape connect ring design for retrofitting the existing Imager configuration, also for the handling & structural consideration. (~23.5 lbs. mass weight per connect ring)

Installed it in the designated location.

Installed the hoist rings to the designated location, the Imager is ready to disconnect from the carriage stand, or from the fixture per experimental further detail specification.

Brief of the FEA results from the simulating model of the Fixture with the Decam Imager

• Simulating the Decam Imager with a more conservative boundary condition:

a). ~1,475 lbs force with the ctr. gravity @9.25” away from edge of the back cover flange.

b). Less restraint location than the actual application of the fixture connects with the

platform carriage stand.

• Maximum calculated working tensile/compressive) stress: fy = 10.98 ksi < Ft = 21.6 ksi

• Maximum calculated working shear stress: fv = 7.58 ksi < Fv = 14.4 ksi

• The maximum deflection: ∆y = ~ 0.041” (~1.04 mm).

Where: Ft is the allowable tensile/compressive stress of the fixture material.

Fv is the allowable shear stress of the fixture material.
