DESCRIPTION
During my bachelor I developed different project of product, graphic and exhibit design.

We were asked to design the set of a television programme from the concept to the technical details. My group of work chose “Loveline”, a talk-show on MTV channel, because it is a programme which focuses the attention on love, friendship and sex by the point of view of young people. We were intrested both in the young target audience and in the themes faced.I worked on the design concept and referen-ces, trying to make the scenery an abstaction of the idea of love. The main references selected were the artist Mario Ceroli, the designers Fabio Novembre and Verner Panton. I used the silhouettes which are in the initial and in the website of the show to represent the phases of love. Then I decided to represent love themes using the shape of a large ribbon which twisted troughout the set space creating the seats for the three showmen.

The aim was to create an overlap of shapes and figures by the use of transparent materials such as plexiglass. The big ribbon, instead, is thought to be made of polystyrene, a material used in scenography thanks to its qualities of lightness. In this project the polysyrene was meant to be covered by resin, in order to keep it more resistent. The main characteristic of a television sceno-graphy is that of being disassembled complete-ly to allow the performance of many shows in the same theatre. For this reason we supposed the elements to be modular.

The atelier of the artist Marcello Mondazzi is set in a green and rough landscape in the country at the south of Rome. The building is an old farmhouse belonging to the age of the Fascism that has been adapted and transformed by the artist in his studio. The rough characteristics of the artist’s works, their archetypal shape respond to the rude context of the building and are strictly tied to it.Mondazzi, infact, is used to burn and melt plastic sheets on a steel frame structure to create semitransparent, amber-coloured sculp-tures.When the artist asked us to create his personal exhibition in his own atelier we felt like we have to enter in a sacred space, the artist’s space. We decided that also the visitors of the exhibi-tion have to feel this sense of respect for the place in which art was created.People have to deserve the vision of sculptu-res, as if they were gifts. This idea was our starting concept. Then we analized the relation between the sculptures and the building and we found the project keyword: light. Our visual and theorical reference was Porosity of Steven Holl.

The main challenge was to preserve and even set off the building characteristics, like the man-gers on the lateral walls, the grooves in the floor which were animal drinking troughs, the wooden beam ceiling, the strict and long inte-rior. To solve these problems first of all we analyzed the sculptures list, trying to underline the demand of space and light of each singular work. Then we divided the sculptures in groups according to the shape, the dimension, the typology and the theme. Each group of scultu-res was meant to be placed near the steel framed windows, allowing the natural light to flow into the stable and make the sculptures alive thanks to their transparent surface. We decided infact not to use artificial light and to open the exhibition from the morning until the sunset, according the artist’s will.We aimed to make the visitors feel as if they were searching the works, as if they didn’t deserve to see the sculptures easly. Thus we decided to hide the works behind punched steel panels which allow to see only the sculpture outline, to imagine the shape of the works and then discover them after a sort of “quéte”.We were asked also to design the exhibition brochure.

The choice of the materials was done trying to fit in with the environment. We decided to use rough and poor materials because the very material that we wanted to model the space was light.Panels were supposed to be fixed to a steel grid that we put on the floor, also to level the grooves of the drinking troughs. We wanted to create a sense of unique space at first sight and it was possible making the panels following a single zigzag line on the plan.At the rear of the stable we left a space in which the artist can continue his work, as he asked us.

In this lab we were asked to choose a wine company and design the stand for the well known wine fair held in Verona: Vinitaly. We chose the “Feudi di San Gregorio” com-pany, because of the attention of this brand to art and design. (They asked Hikaru Mori to design their wine cellar and the labels of their wines were created by Vignelli.)
What we aimed was to create a stand in which the visitor could discover all the traditions tied to the production of wine through sensations. We want the stand to be an experience more than a simple visit. Therefore we analyzed all the steps in the production of wine and we assigned to each step a particular area of the stand and a speci-fic interaction or activity.

We assigned to each passage an interaction which involved the senses of visitors. In the area of Cultivation (01) you had to spy into a box in which you saw the shadow of a grapevine becoming larger and larger. This would have been the symbol of seasons chan-ging and plant growth. In the section of the Harvest (02) you had to enter in a narrow space. Images and colours of the grape harvest were projected on a large sheet that you had to move in order to let you enter. In this space you could also listen to a record of the countrymen voices during the harvest. To smell the Fermentation (03) you had to slide into a hanging box which had the inner part covered by old barrel wood. The Bottling (04) was represented by bottles that, thanks to the light beyond them, seemed to be slowly filled. The Wine tasting (05) was the only part that was supposed to be seen from the outside (previous steps occurred in enclosed boxes in the stand). Finally we added the Selling (06) as the final part of the wine process, and we designed a space in which seats had to be taken out from walls.

We were asked to invent a new push button panel for the elevator, trying to improve the lack of comfort and effectiveness of the current typologies of this product. We made a survey asking people information about their habits using the lift in various con-texts, such as home, office, public spaces, shopping malls..etc.We analyzed the weaknesses of modern eleva-tor interfaces: -if you don’t know the floor of the office in which you want to go, you are not able to use lift-if you have a skyscraper with 60 floor it’s impossible to have 60 buttons, one for each floor
Thus we decided to use the technologyof touch-screen to improve the basic functions of the panel, adding also new devices like the computer-aided research. If you don’t know the exact position in the building of the place in wich you want to go, you are able to find out it thanks to the push button panel, which indicates you the floor and the location in the floor of your destination.

We designed a basic interface for the main functions. We can use the buttons “Enter” and “Canc” because we know that everyone of us have seen this kind of buttons at least one time in the interfaces of everyday life, e.g. mobile phone, fax or printer. We decided to enhance the functionality of this product with the computer-aided research. We decided to use a graphic that could be familiar to everyone. Therefore we used the basic computer graphic with folders for the research categories. We made an hypothesis for each context in which the elevator can be used: hospital, hotel, public offices, houses.
In the attached Cd you can find a demonstrati-ve video. The menu is in italian and it is divided in three sections: basic functions, apartment hypothesis and hotel hypothesis.

I was asked to think to an object with the con-cept of synthesis. My aim was to create a product in which synthesis would mean the overlap of functions. As we can observe in the objects we use eve-ryday, modern design tends to increase the number of things that could be done with the same object, reducing the size: mobile phone are used not only to call, but also to browse, to download, to make photos...etc. Thus I thought to join two objects that are always used together: toothbrush and toothpa-ste and I created “Spazzofricio”, that in italian is the fusion of the names of the two objects, “spazzolino” e “dentifricio”.

I measured the tailspins of different brands of toothpaste to understand if the tube threads were similar.I found that there are a lot of differences in the tubes of toothpaste. Therefore I decided that my product would be a brand-product for one specific brand, that is to say it would be a product meant to promote the new brand paste.I counted to add rigid supports on the laterla sides of the tube to let the object to be held in the hand during the wash.I made also a working prototype of this product.

We were asked to find new needs tied to new ways of living. We underlined the need for green areas in the urban and metropolitan context. We wanted to create an object that could represent nature in the house environment, that could make you feel like you were in the lawn, a little corner of green in your apartment. Then we designed an object that could have different configurations and functions according to the user’s need.Physis is a pouf that could be used when closed as a seat and as a box. When it is opened it creates seats on the floor and a coffee table in the middle for your moment of relax.

I was supposed to create the corporate identity of a company.I chose as name of my invented design office Kook, a palindrome (a word readable backward and forward). The meaning of this word was also interesting: kook is a person regarded as strange, eccen-tric, or crazy. Then I was asked to create a logo which under-lined the brand vision and charachter. These are represented by an image and a brief and effective sentence.I decided to insert in the logo an harrow, symbol of reaching goals, and a orange spot, symbol of diversity from competitors.

Dear Mr. Smith
Come siamo sciocchi, pensò lei, attraversando Victoria Street.

I decided to participate to a competition for my bachelor thesis. The city of Pavia asked the young designers to invent street furniture wich can improve the comunication and the gathering among the young people of the city. Therefore, before planning, I analyzed the city and the needs of young people living in Pavia.I found out that there are many students in Pavia (one each four inhabitants). Many of them live in university dormitory, where they are able to share experience with other young people, but the city doesn’t offer many chance of leisu-re.I began to think that it was necessary to create a focus, a gathering point which could also became a city landmark. The concept was the bonfire, a warm and bright point in the night around which people gather together. The mental image was a nest, like a big embrace.

In the schetches I began to make hypothesis about the shape and the functions of the object.I was thinking to a bench that could attract people for its charachteristics.I wanted to design a big warm nest in which people can meet, talk and stay together.I decided that it would be made of tubes, some warm and some luminous, I thought.I wanted people to interact with this tangle of tubes, finding the more confortable configura-tion to seat.
I made researches about the material to use and finally I found a particular kind of tubes (the one used for the floor heating) that is a san-dwich of PE and aluminium and it is usually coloured blue or red.It was fit to provide heat to the bench.

I designed this bench as a big warm coloured nest. The structure was composed by a metallic frame which allowed to hide and protect the boiler and to make the bench steady.Over the structure were fixed a series of tubes layers with different functions: covering, heating and interacting.
The references in the world of design that I took in consideration were the Campana brothers, that are used to create wonderful object using rough materials, the heated bench of Hubbens for homeless, presented to Torino Geodesign expo, and the wrapping shape of a seat by Patricia Urquiola.

My aim was to create little and random spots throughout the city in which everyone could feel free of communicate and socialize. The ring configuration matched with the idea of sharing ideas and experience. It was important also to mark the city with a strong sign: the non-conventional bench shape and its vivid colour make this object became a city landmark.

The competition assigned a specific area to each partecipant. The area assigned to ma0 was the courtyard of a school. It was a particular school for young boys and girls who had social and familiar problems. This courtyard housed a restaurant and a pub in which the students of the school worked. Therefore it is a particular place which had diffe-rent kinds of needs and of users according to the moment of the day.ma0 involved in the design process the users, that is to say the students of the school, making them express their needs and wishes.Trying to fit the students expectations and needs ma0 designed a seat that could have different kind of use and configuration in order to serve the several different activities of tne courtyard. The result was a boa-float-shaped modular seat that could be used as a support for tables, lights and other kinds of furniture and could allow several configurations in a total freedom of movement.

Perugia is a city in which the attention to sustai-nable mobility is very high. The famous system of public escalator is the symbol of a city which refuses the indiscrimina-te use of the car. However it is a city where the public transport is difficult to improve and promote, because of the physical conformation of the soil. Most of the street slope of a big amount of degrees and, therefore, it is very difficult for buses to create an effective network of tran-sport which covers the whole city. The Minimetro, a new and innovative kind of transport, solve much of this problems using rails. After the good outcome of the first minimetrò line, the Naif s.r.l. office with the ma0 office were asked to make a feasibility studio of the extension of the minimetrò lines. The aim of Naif+ma0 was not only to extend the lines but also to create a zone in which pede-strian could take advantages of a series of complementary transport networks to join all the places in the city without the car. This is the idea of the ZAPP_pedestrian priority zone.

We produced a lot of technical studies but this is not the right place to show them. The main part of this work, the most funny, was the communication of the project goals to the citizens. We decided to create a kind of touristic city map of the future, in which there were all the transport networks that we wanted to create and there was the definition of the ZAPP, the area in which everyone would have been able to move without car or private means of tran-sport.The main difficulty of the work was the overlap of information: street names, topography, tran-sport lines, main biuldings, etc.

è facilmente attraversa-bile a piedi.

One of my passion is photography.I like walking throughout the streets of Rome with my analogical reflex camera and catch moments of being, as would say Virginia Wolf. These are few exemples that I was able to copy on a digital support.
