ixth and Main is a conceptual LEED neighborhood proposed for the city of Smithfield located in Northern Utah. As a class, we were asked to provide an entirely new living experience to the city of Smithfield, something modern and unique that gave a sense of community and culture.

In the existing site of our proposed neighborhood there was an abandoned Pea Factory (The Morgan Pea Factory) on the west side and an old lumber mill (Cantwell Lumber) still in use on the east side. We conducted extensive research on the history of each business and also went around the town doing surveys of what the people of Smithfield felt they needed. We discovered there needed to be more restaurants closer to homes, more businesses, more retail options, and more cultural activities.

Individually we were all assigned (1) retail space of our choosing. I chose CRATE & BARREL. (1) fine dining restaurant that was completely original. MR. MORGAN’S. (1) space of our choice. COMMUNITY THEATER. And we all designed a new FIREHOUSE pizzaria and HUNK-A-BREAD bakery.

While not only designing our own spaces, we were also tasked with creating 3D Models for each of our buildings, and build a 12’ X 9’ wooden model to be diisplayed during our senior exhibt.

Firehouse Pizzaria is an existing pizza franchise located in Northern, Utah. We as a class interviewed the owner and developed a new program for his new restaurant and new restaurant called Hunk-a-Bread. For Firehouse we gathered information such as a larger eating area, a larger kitchen, more outdoor seating, different variety of seating, etc. And also discovered what he would like aesthically; dimmer lights, more intimate feel, and a red/black/white colour theme.

Hunk-a-Bread was a bakery idea that the owner of Firehouse developed. It was completely new to the neighborhood and he felt that the city of Smithfield could use a smaller, more cafe’ restaurant. He wanted a place where people could sit and work for a few hours. He would serve doughnuts, bagels, salad, cookies and cakes. He had no branding or any idea when it came to color and the design so it was completely up to us as students to decide on the aesthetics.

I was inspired by wood and the natural flow of nature for my cafe’. I wanted some-thing completely different than Firehouse and used contrasting colors and materials.

Sixth & Main Community Theater was designed for “Sixth & Main” in Smithfield, Utah. The concept was inspired by the mountains and the Utah skyline. The theater houses four

movie theaters and one live theater.

concept and inpirationthis theatre was inspired by the community. there was a need for a theater where differ-ent “playhouses’’ in the area could come perform that wasn’t just at the local high-school.

The mountains were the main inspiration for the theater because I felt they were the one thing all of the people in Smithfield could relate too.

these are my preliminary sketches. I knew I wanted the architecture of the theater to be more abstract then the rest of the Sixth & Main community, I believe people will be attracted to the theater just out of pure curiosity.

The theater holds about 1,030. The main lobby is 2,117 sq. ft., the dressing room area is 1, 153 sq. ft. and the each movie theater hold around 99 people (fixed seating).

I chose Crate & Barrel as my retail space mainly because someone I personally knew, who knew the area well, expressed a dire need for a store such as Crate & Barrel. I personally have never shopped there, but as I did my research I quickly fell in love with their products and store philosophy.

I kept the design very close to a typical Crate & Barrel. I enjoyed designing with such clean lines and white architecture because it was completely new to what I normally design with. I also created the Crate & Barrel siqns myself to stay as close as I could with their own branding.

Mr. Morgan’s

Mr. Morgan’s is a fine english resturant located in the exisiting building that once used to be the Morgan Pea Factory canning building.

The concept for the restaurant came from the history of the building. It was originally a pea factory so I began searching pea recipies. I found that the majority of the recipies I found originated from England, so I decided the food should be mainly of English decent and cuisine. From there I named the restaurant Mr. Morgan’s to hold onto the original “Morgan Pea Factory”

colours ... ladies are welcome of course.

The concept of this club was to represent a Kabuki Theater in the heart of Tokyo’s downtown red light district; Kabukicho. The façade of the club resembled a traditional Kabuki Theater, while the inside of the club was very modern and represented a popular Kabuki play called “Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami”. Kabukicho is a district in the heart of Tokyo, most famous for being the premier red light district in Tokyo. It houses many bars, love hotels and is often called the “Sleepless Town”. In the late 1940s a Kabuki Theater was supposed to be built on this site but instead residential housing was built then it formed into what it is today, but the name Kabuki-cho still stayed.

The play that will be represented inside of the club is “Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami”. More specifically, I’m choosing the third act of this play. It’s the story of triplets: Ume, Sakura and Matsu. Each character represents some sort of element in the play. Ume represents pine blossoms, is a hero and wears bright red makeup. Sakura represents cherry blossoms, an d is the romantic gentle side of the story and Matsu represents pine and is the villain, his face is painted with vibrant blue lines. The club will be broken into three sections with each section personifying each one of the trip-lets; through the use of colors, patterns, lighting, etc.

Bossolo was my sophomore year project. We were assigned to design a modern house that had to be under 1,000 sq. ft. I didn’t use anything as a concept or for inspiration for the house I just thought, what would I personally like to live in. The house is four stories. The first level houses a wine cellar, and a laundry room. The second level is the main living room with a kitchen, balcony, and an elevator that takes you to the roof top terrace; which happens to be on the 4th level. The third level has a bathroom, bedroom, balcony, and outside shower.

We also completed a full set of construction docu-ments with the houses we built, and also had to made a foam-core model to be displayed that year.
