As imagined in a space
RomeDante’s Divine Comedy and the water systems of Rome inspired the design for a Dante Pavilion in Rome. On Piazza della Quercia, two aqueducts cross paths, creating an opportunity for the play of water. A poem composed of lines from dante’s inferno creates a basis for inspiration on the exploration of how to build in mega-historical city. Project was a collaboration.

Avoiding ‘themey’ space, this design uses the element of line to create playful elements, espe-cially in custom cabinetry units. Thickened entries create rhythm and bright materials keeps the space cheerful.

The design of custom cabinetry was an emphasis for this project. My design included thick cabinetry units separating spaces. The units provided a transitional barrier within the design and also allowed for storage to be imbedded within the thickened units. The elevations below show cabinetry detailing of one of the units from inside an exam room.

As imagined in a space
Alluding to the university experience, The Stacks uses the library for inspiration. Meant to appeal to UO alum and students, the key in the design was not to go over the top with the inherent theme.
‘Dining blocks’ are inserted into the historical building and break up the space. They allude to shelving units and contrast the historical framework. The row like quality creates the same mystery one feels when traversing the rows of a library. With repetition and rhythm in their placement, privacy is created for groups of diners and also promotes a cove like experience.
The palette of the space is neutral, to allow the brightness of the contrasting yellow to enliven the restaurant. Materials are inspired by the book and the page by utilizing papery textures and borrowing the classic black and white aesthetics.
