This project is a collaborative effort to activate the nichols bridgeway connecting Chicago’s Millenium park to the Art Institute. The student group defined new parameters for “performance” by using outside forces such as light, transportation, and tourism.

This interior performance occuring on the canopy offers an interactive visual experience responding to people’s movements. The intensity, pace, and color is altered to heighten the audience’s experience, and the interactive performance element allows the public to part of the production.

As natural light changes throughout the day, the intensity of illuminated imagery on the canopy’s exterior adjusts. During daylight hours, the canopy is less intense. At night, the canopy begins to glow with bright colors and images.

The exterior performance utilizes information present in the urban setting of the site and its nearby attractions. As an active performance, it provides valuable marketing opportunities to inform the public about exhibits or events at the Art Institute or Millenium Park.

HOME takes residential concepts to a new level by combining luxurious elements of a home setting and a lush retail space. HOME houses vintage furniture and apparel, an apothecary, a coffee shop, and an open lobby that is an event space. Combining these features creates a one of a kind experiential shopping destination.

“design is”... was considered for Harrington College of Design’s exhibit booth at Neocon trade show. The booth was suppose to represent point of view and collaboration. The conept was based around the idea that “it takes more than one point of view to design collaboratively.” Some of the paramters were for it to be Interactive, create a space that is fun and welcoming booth at Neocon, be a fun way to remember Harrington.

design is...

empty and full pegboards

The idea behind the booth interaction is to give participants an empty peg board and a blank peg. This gives them the chance to define design to them and contribute to the wall art that will be created using the different color pegs. There is no right or wrong answer and there is no right or wrong space to leave your peg. The outcome is continually changing and nothing is permanent. Participation is encouraged because in order to get some color, the booth needs interaction.

Tables will store the empty pegs and also be used as writing surfaces. The open floor plan allows for more people in the booth at one time. The pegs show dimension on the back wall depending on the angle it is seen from.

overall design concept

marketspace

Market Space was created after studying branded environments along with the history of shopping in urban locations. It showcases how consumer culture and those environments affect one another. More specifically, this project identifies and creates a retail typology essential to urban communities. Market Space is comprised of local existing companies individualized in their own branded environments while simulataneously creating a brand identity for the overall market and entire space.

space planning: departmentalizing

Interior entry and overall brand of Market Space

Market Space is purposely designed to act as a neutral that can be easily recognizable so not to compete with other vendor spaces, and instead, act as an overlying cohesive brand. Though the palette is meant to be neutral, the brightness of it refreshes the new idea of Market Space, creating juxtaposition against the original features of the building.

Cordinated booth space and product wall displayCordinated’s product line consists of amp cables, ipod, ipad, and iphone cables that present the cords in a fun, unique way.

A fun space to reflect the product was the goal, and a mock stage setup was created using amps as tables, and creating a live stage setup. Amp cords have variance that cannot be recognized without hearing the difference so allowing them to play bass or guitar not only creates a fun environment, it helps sell the product.

An important objective for the owner was to provide shoppers with the opportunity to test the product.

Pierogi Picnic booth spacePierogi Picnic is a company offering handmade, organic, vintage, up-cycled, and repurposed clothing. The client wanted to create a space that was feminine, yet rough with individualized embellishments, similar to her clothing.

In order to create a space that would replicate the company and its product, it needed to be uncluttered, developed as an open space so it was approachable and easy to navigate within. Bright colors, playful signage, and unique details establish a sense of brand identity within the space.

Other strategies involve using raw materials including various and repurposed woods to enhance the space.

CoffeeSpace by Market SpaceCoffeeSpace is created and individually branded as to be consistent with the Market Space brand.Similar colors and design strategies are continued here, but as a shopper, one can recognize the brand within the space to its own identity.

The proximity of the space is located next to the main circulation pathways of escalators and main staircase intended for users of Market Space. CoffeeSpace is designed to be open and inviting, as a way to connect the people in Market Space.

Provenance WineProvenance Food and Wine is an existing wine store with two location in the Chicagoland area. For the design of Market Space, the Provenance brand was streamlined, including its identity and exposure creating a branded booth space that is again, incorporated with the rest of the market.

The model of operations is similar to CoffeeSpace and is purposely located across the way from the coffee shop giving the audience more than one option in terms of food and drink. They are equally visible and open in hopes to carry on the connectivity throughout the space with each other and also with the rest of Market Space. The design lends to the brand’s distinctiveness, but keeps the space exposed and accessible.

Flexible Event Space

The flexible event space is located on the second floor and its design is extremely important in terms of creating a community space to be used by the public. Its flexibility allows for it to be utilized for almost anything.

Below, the space is depicted as a traveling library. This idea shows one option of how the space may be used. Although it can be treated separate, it does not lose the connectivity with the rest of the market or with the city as it lines the upper windows on State Street, its users are able to look out the windows and have a direct street view. With bookcases on wheels, and furniture light and transportable, the space can easily be reconfigured to accommodate an evening cocktail party, as shown at the left.

The sculpture is the only permanent item in the space and its design is based off the logo identity of Market Space never losing the link to the market. It is large enough to walk through and allows for some variation including incorporating light fixtures. The space was developed to be adaptable but not lose the relationship with the rest of the market.

Norris Center

Norris Center is a primary hub for students and administration on

campus. A central concourse intended for gatherings, waiting

areas, and small meeting spaces needed cohesion and a sense

of functionality. Furniture and fabric palettes were devleoped by

incorporating existing conditions including concrete walls, existing

carpet and flooring.

The project consisted of creating a Greenroom for a local nightclub. A small hangout space for artists to lounge in before and after acts was created. The space needed to maximize seating and a welcoming vibe while sticking to a minimal time frame and budget.

freelanceno label

The owners also wanted a warehouse space which would house offices as well as a skate park, dj booth, and open space for events.

The need for this project was to create a retail store outlet to brand an existing watch company. The design is based off the product packaging which uses plastic tubing and is also seen in the store. The brand caters to a younger demographic and markets itself with music and recreational sports, which allowed for incorporating sleek trends including backlit glass and modern colors and materials into design development.
