Foot Pedal DesignFoot Pedal Design First, compacts the First, compacts the

trash by placing the trash by placing the lid on the containerlid on the container

Then, a foot pump Then, a foot pump motion lifts an inner motion lifts an inner trash container trash container straight up onto a straight up onto a compacting plate compacting plate stabilized by ones stabilized by ones handhand

Page 9: Design Partition, Project Plan, Task Assignments and Conceptual Designs

Advantages / Advantages / DisadvantagesDisadvantages

Advantages

Maximizes a person ability to apply force by using the leg to lift the inner container +

Applies an additional force from the person placing the lid on the container +

Eliminates the need for trash bags +

Disadvantages

Can contain only a moderate level of trashCan contain only a moderate level of trash -The inner container needs to be continually cleaned to keep

sanitary -

Circular design could pose problems for rectangular trash articles -Interesting

A simple design that should have a large compression ratio

Page 10: Design Partition, Project Plan, Task Assignments and Conceptual Designs

Grinder DesignGrinder Design

Page 11: Design Partition, Project Plan, Task Assignments and Conceptual Designs

Advantages / Advantages / DisadvantagesDisadvantages

Advantages

Simple and reliable build design +

Easy intuitive of operation for user +

Large crank handle allows for increased grinding force +

Concealed trash receptacle is sanitary.

Disadvantages

Possibility of trash backup -

Not all types/sizes of trash could fit -

Design may not produce most efficient compacting ratio. -

Interesting

The grinder wheels have the ability to shred and destroy trash that a normal compactor may not be able to accomplish.

removed to lift the side panel removed to lift the side panel out from in front of the out from in front of the compaction plate compaction plate

Once the side panel is Once the side panel is removed the lid can be removed the lid can be replaced and the compaction replaced and the compaction can begin can begin

The compaction in this design The compaction in this design has the ability to be very has the ability to be very strong since a foot mechanism strong since a foot mechanism or a long hand crank can be or a long hand crank can be placed one foot off the ground placed one foot off the ground

The side panel may not be The side panel may not be needed if a trash bag could be needed if a trash bag could be used in this design used in this design

Page 14: Design Partition, Project Plan, Task Assignments and Conceptual Designs

Advantages / Advantages / DisadvantagesDisadvantages

Advantages

This design can use many different mechanisms to compact it from from the sidethe side +

The foot or a long hand crank can be used for more strength since the center of compaction is about a foot off the ground +

Could be used with trash bags or without trash bags potentially +Disadvantages  Removal of side panel could cause potential leakages and problems Removal of side panel could cause potential leakages and problems

(if a trash bag is able to be used then the side panel would not (if a trash bag is able to be used then the side panel would not be needed)be needed) -

A outer container would be needed to house the compaction A outer container would be needed to house the compaction mechanism on the sidemechanism on the side -

Would compact the trash to one side causing the user to have to place the trash on a certain side of the trash can -

InterestingA unique compaction design from the side which could maximize

the users strength since the center of compaction is about a foot off of the ground

Page 16: Design Partition, Project Plan, Task Assignments and Conceptual Designs

Advantages / Advantages / DisadvantagesDisadvantages

Advantages

No need to remove lid to insert trash or operate compacting mechanism +

Simple cranking mechanism in a fixed position +Auger will supply adequate amount of compaction +Disadvantages   Difficult to have pin release support force of compactionDifficult to have pin release support force of compaction -Container may have to be much wider to allow adequate

compaction -

Circular design could pose problems for rectangular trash articles -

Interesting

The crank is fixed in one place and does not ascend or descend

Advantages / Advantages / DisadvantagesDisadvantages

Advantages

Capable of applying force from both the top and bottom +Foot pedal is easy to handle and operate without being

cumbersome +

Bottle jacks are easy to operate and require almost no maintenance +

Disadvantages  Mechanisms are more advanced to incorporate the use of Mechanisms are more advanced to incorporate the use of

the upper lidthe upper lid -

Range of motion is still limited by aesthetics of the upper compaction arm -

Inside of lid could become messy after compaction -Interesting

The lid can actually serve as a compacting tool by a mechanism that translates the force provided by the hydraulic jack.

Advantages / Advantages / DisadvantagesDisadvantages

Advantages

Capable of applying 1-½ tons of force +Lever is easy to handle and operate without being

cumbersome +

Bottle jacks are easy to operate and require almost no maintenance +

Disadvantages   Bottle jack will be heavy (6lbs) and will have to be secured

tightly -

Range of motion is dependent on size of the jack (so a greater range of motion requires a larger jack) -

Trash would have to be inserted from the side as opposed to the top eliminating the option of throwing away oversized objects

-

Interesting

Amount of force that can be applied is the greatest out of current concepts, but sides of container would have to be able to withstand such a great amount of pressure
