FORMER MP Elliot Morley is facinga seven-year prison sentence
afterpleading guilty to criminal charges
that make him Parliaments biggestcheat.The one-time minister
admitted fid-
dling 30 ,4 28 in Parliamenta ryexpenses.
Morley, an MP in Scunthorpe from1987 to 2010, could now become
thefourth Parliamentarian to be jailedsince the expenses scandal
broke.
When revelations about Morleysexpenses were first revealed in
2009, hevowed that he would fight to clear hisname.
But he used his first appearance atSouthwark Crown Court in
south Lon-don to admit two charges of falseaccounting, thereby
dishonestly claim-ing30,428more thanhe wasentitled toon a mortgage
against his Wintertonhome. The charges against the MPcarry a
maximum sentence of sevenyears in prison.
A grim-faced Morley said nothingafter the hearing as he made his
way
past a media scrum.But his political career is now
intatters.
Before the hearing, onlookershad watched in hushed
silen ce as a ser i-ous-looking Morleytook his seat.
He avoided mak-ing e ye conta ctwith the packedpress and
publicgalleries.
