Dear friends,

Om Swastiastu! Welcome to Design Life Bali 2009! Thank you for participating and making it happen! After less than 3 months of preparation, inviting friends, guest speakers, calling resorts and artists, we are finally in our final couple of days before the Big Design Life opening party!

What a relief!

Design Life has a humble beginning. It started of as our wants to get together with friends, and re-connect with like-minded creative people from our RMIT days. Many of our friends are now based in Asia, Australia and throughout the region; being designers in their own rights, doing the things that they are passionate about! For most of us, working in this creative industries mean full-on late hours work almost everyday! (Not that we are complaining! ;) but you know what we are talking about!

So creating Design Life is meant to be a pause (a coma as what Made Wijaya called it) for us to have a chance to get together with friends and get to know new friends. To be inspired by each other’s wealth of experiences and celebrate our Design Lives! We hope that it will be a wonderful exchange of ideas/experiences/networks for all of us across the creative disciplines, and that we will come out of this refreshed, and ready to face the ‘world’ again!

During these past months, we have had the support and help from many dear friends. We would like to especially thank Andrea Mina, Sand Helsel, and Ross Mcleod of RMIT, as well as our International guest speakers Made Wijaya, John Hardy and Richard Hassell & Wong Mun Summ of WOHA, who have all been very generous and inspiring. You helped to make this happen! To Lina Ooi, Hadi, Winy Wijaya (who unfortunately will not be at the event this time), Thank you for your exchanges of ideas and inputs for the event. A special thank to Sant Qiu who shared with us important pointers on how to put this event together in such a short period of time. We love you!

Andrea Mina is Associate Professor in Interior Design and one of the School’s Director of International Development. His teaching responsibilities include design tutor 4th year major projects and theses and Design Studio leader at 2nd/3rd year levels. Andrea coordinates 1st year Technical Studies and Study Abroad/Student Exchange activities; he is the International Student Selection Officer. He is interested in the value of travel as a profound learning experience and has organised student travel studios to Morocco, Spain and India.

Sand Helsel is an Associate Professor in Architecture and the Co-Director of International Development. She is the Associate Professor of Architectural Design - Expanded Field and is the Expanded Field Stream Coordinator. Her teaching includes Expanded Field, Portfolio and Asian Architecture and Urbanism Course Coordinator. She researches into Expanded Field which is a cross-disciplinary design research stream within the RMIT School of Architecture and Design that incorporates project based design research across the disciplines of art, architecture and landscape architecture. “Instead of focusing upon the differences between the disciplines, we capitalise on the common ground: the design methods, the scales and nature of engagement, the sites for action, and the methods of production and dissemination of the research. The project is inclusive rather than exclusive. An cross-disciplinary practice can identify the gaps that conven-tional practice has marginalised – as fertile sites for action. Broad areas of research include public art and public space; ephemeral architectures; social, political and economic infrastruc-tures; and a lateral approach towards social and environmental sustainability.”

Ross McLeod is a Senior Lecturer in Interior Design and the Research Director of the School of Architecture and Design Furniture Laboratory.Over the past twenty years Ross has worked as both a designer and as an academic, completing a wide range of one-off and production furniture designs, interior architecture projects, exhibi-tions designs and sculptural works both locally and internationally.As a lecturer he has been involved in innovative design studio education and program planning at RMIT, University of Tasmania, Lasalle College Singapore and the University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo.

ORGANISER Jindee Chua and Suriawati Qiu are the organisers of this inaugural Design Life event. They graduated from RMIT in 1999 in Architecture and Interior Design, and after working in architec-ture offices and design firms in Australia, Malaysia and Singapore, have since based themselves in Bali, nurturing their design studio Cush.Cush. Jindee is inspired by the variety of unique and natural materials as well as the fine craftsmanship in Bali and Indonesia, while Suriawati is passionate and intrigue with the myths and culture, the story telling aspect, and the many different characters of Bali.

Dek GehBorn Made Tegeh Okta Wahyu Mahery or better known as Dek Geh, in Singaraja (North Bali) in 1976, Dek Geh started learning dancing from his father at a tender age of 5. Since then Dek Geh begin his journey of learning traditional Balinese dances from different masters before he join ISI Denpasar. He has choreographed and performed in numerous international events including “Stone Body” (2005) performed at the 9th Indonesian Dance Festival during the Jakarta International Arts Festival 2008, “ILAGALIGO” directed by Robert Wilson (USA) and produced by Change Perform-ing Arts (Italy) and Bali Purnati Center for the Arts (Bali). His dances have brought him to many cities such as Singapore, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Madrid, Lyon, Ravenna-Italy, New York, Melbourne, Milan and Taipei.

Mireki Jasmine OkuboHer spirit comes from all the way from China, crossing The Himalayan Mountains of Tibet and Nepal to India. Mireki Jasmine Okubo was born in Southern Turkey in 1987. She first visited Bali in 1990 and fell in love with Balinese dance at the age of 3. She returned to Bali and began her first Balinese dance lesson in Ubud in 1996. She was invited to Contemporary dance performance “Tasogare” by Yoko Murao, a Japanese choreographer based in Seattle, USA to perform Balinese dance. Jasmine entered ISI Denpasar in 2003, as a special student at the age of 16 and was awarded the 1st prize at “Oleg Tambulilingan” Dies Natalis, ISI Denpasar in 2005.

DiahBorn in Amlapura (East Bali) in 1985, Diah began her Balinese dance training since 7 years old. Her interest & talent in the art of dance leads her to further her studies in ISI Denpasar. She has collabo-rated, choreographed and performed with other local and international artists including Keiko Nakano (Japan) and Cok Sawitri (Bali).

Agus TejaIn year 2004, Agus Teja graduated from ISI Denpasar and realised his dream of his childhood love of making and playing bamboo instruments by composing and performing a solo piece titled 'Mood and Motion'. Since then his interest in fusing traditional & contemporary music has brought him to collaborations with Suarti Silver’s fashion show in Jakarta and a performance in Bali art festival 2009.

Spirit of Fire is a contemporary dance performance choreographed and performed by young local up and coming artists featuring Dek Geh, Jasmine Okubo and Diah. A new generation of young contemporary artists who started from the traditional Balinese dance training at a very young age (as like most Balinese children) and have their formal training at ISI (Institute Seni Indonesia) Denpasar, Bali.

Made Wijaya“TROPICAL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL and Post-Zen Depression”

Made Wijaya was born Michael White in Sydney, Australia. He has created more than 1000 gardens, including legendary works for hospitality icons like Bali Oberoi, Bali Hyatt, Amandari Resort and the recent luxurious Bvlgari Resort, to name a few. He is a recognized authority on tropical gardens and South East Asian architecture, as well as a passionate writer who brings the concept of tropical gardens to the world. He has published numerous books, among them: The Best of Stranger in Paradise 1996 – 2008; Balinese Architecture: Towards an Encyclopaedia; Tropical Garden Design; At Home in Bali; Modern Tropical Garden Design; and Architecture of Bali – A Source Book of Traditional and Modern Forms. He also contributed to Tropical Asian Style and was the main author of a pocket guidebook to Bali.

John Hardy“Green Life Green school Green building Green future”

John Hardy is a designer and artist who has built a jewelry empire under the John Hardy brand name. John arrived in Bali with only a couple of hundred dollars in his pocket in the early 70s. Noting the exquisite craftsmanship of local artisans, he combined traditional jewelry making techniques that goes back to thousands of years with European Design, and has since then built a huge cult following for the John Hardy brand all over the world. Recently, John sold his share in pursuit of his next venture, the revolutionary Green School and the unique Bamboo construction company.

Richard Hassell + Wong Mun Summ“Alila Uluwatu & recent works”

Australian Richard Hassell and Singaporean Wong Mun Summ are the founders of multiple award-winning Singapore-based architecture firm WOHA. Coming from different background and culture, the partners have been awarded with the prestigious Aga-khan award for Architecture. In their recent award-winning Balinese project Alila Villas Uluwatu, they have re-created their version of Bali, artfully interpreting traditional Balinese elements with modern aesthetic and eco-design.

Re-inventing Bali – International guest speakers

Bali is world famous for its beauty. Its rich culture is steep in tradition and rituals, its magical dances, its hypnotic music, its unique ceremonies, its simple religious yet open minded people… Balinese landscapes, craftsmanship, tropical architectural design are all a reflection of this refined culture. With its unique culture, Bali has been able to attract Designers from all over the world to come to Bali, and create a piece of Bali for themselves. It is fascinating to see how Bali has managed to keep re-inventing itself and remain sustainable and uniquely Bali throughout these years. We believe Bali will continue to inspire Designers to create layers of ‘Bali’ which is very close to nature, spirit and humanity. In this inaugural Design Life event in Bali, we are honored to present 3 creative and passionate individuals who have made a difference in Bali.

RMIT ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN ALUMNI REUNION EVENT

Green School is founded by John Hardy and aims to connect learning and creativity in an inquiry based approach to education. The campus is built of sustainable materials (Indonesian bamboo, traditional mud walls, local alang-alang grass) and is cooled/powered by sustainable energy solutions (micro-hydro power, solar power, bio-diesel, and natural air-conditioning).

The campus is remarkable with their unique application of bamboo structures. The central building, "Heart of School", is one of the largest bamboo structures in the world and has an architectural beauty usually witnessed only in cathedrals and opera houses.

Alila Villas Uluwatu is designed by award-winning Singapore architectural firm, WOHA. The resort comprising of 34 residential villas and a hotel with 40 villa suites was designed in 2004 and officially opened in July 2009. The site is situated on the southern coast of Bali where individual villas are tiered and oriented for maximum exposure to the panoramic views of the sea and the horizon. The architectural language combines refreshing contemporary lines and detailing with traditional materials that allude to the rich Balinese culture and built heritage. The interiors are lushly furnished and resonate with a soft, clean chic-ness that contrasts with the rich and rugged gardens and site.

This tour of Alila Uluwatu will be led by Richard Hassell of WOHA who will be sharing his insights on the making of the resort.

The word for temple in Bali is “pura”, which in Sanskrit means “space surrounded by a wall”. The temple is certainly the most important institution on the island and the clearest illustration of the spirit of the Balinese religion.Learn more about the rules that dictate the intriguing design of Balinese temple from its architectural and sculptural articulation to its rituals, ceremonies & temple etiquettes.* *Dress appropriately before entering any temple. Women should not wear shorts or bare their shoulders. Shoes have to be removed while a traditional adat or sash must be tied around the waist. If the temple requires a sarong to be worn, there is always one for hire around the area. Ladies take note; do not enter the temple if you are menstruating. Anyone with a bleeding cut should also avoid entry because there is a general sanction against blood on holy soil.

Designed by Australian architect Peter Muller, Amandari was the second of Adrian Zecha's respected Aman resorts to be built in the 80’s. Amandari or ‘peaceful spirits,’ embraces the quintessence of Bali’s ancient striking traditions, reflecting the harmony and inner peace of a people whose lifeblood is a manifestation of a combined dedication to virtuousness, warmth and inner prosperity. Designed as a Balinese village, Amandari in Ubud has river-stone walkways and high paras-stone walls. A visit to Amandari will help us understand why its understated elegance and authentic Balinese design has inspired countless imitators until today!

Wallpaper* magazine described this groundbreaking resort in Sayan, Ubud as “the hot hotel for the close of the century” – and there is no doubt that it is architectur-ally unique. Daring, Designed in the late 1990s by the studio of Malaysian-born British architect, John Heah, the resort is built beneath a huge, man-made lotus pool that seems to float among the treetops. The resort’s main building which houses its suites, health club, spa and restaurant together with its villas are carefully sighted over the hillside to frame the terraced rice fields and the sacred Ayung river.

The Four Seasons Resort is still as talk-about now as during construction! As one would question whether the bold gesture of the architecture is really appropriate in the context of a pristine and sacred river valley in Bali?

A joint endeavor of the Royal Sukawati Family and Japanese Cosmetics Company Shiseido, the elegant Kirana Spa is a stand alone destination spa that offers treatments fit for a king.

Inspired by the way crystal clear water that moves through the arcane gardens of Kyoto, the Bangkok-based, Harvard-educated architect and landscape designer Bill Bensley and Thai-born architect Lek Bunnag wanted to create similar calming and relaxing experience on the journey down the hill with abundance of water features and lush tropical foliage to the private spa Villas where one can receive treatment in an exclusive relaxing environment beside the Ayung river. “First and foremost, Begawan Giri is a home,” declares founder Bradley Gardner, “albeit an extremely luxurious one. That’s why it’s called a private estate, not a hotel.” And it pushes the boundaries of hospitality.

“Conceiving and building the estate was like climbing up a glacier with my finger nails,” remarked Bradley. He and his wife bought the site in 1989, but didn’t really know what they were going to do with it. It was only after they “sat the land” – all the while meditating, planning and planting over 2,000 hardwood trees – that they began to get an inkling of what was to come. First come work on the outdoor spa; water was harnessed into natural pools, decking laid and simple outdoor bale’s built. Then Yew Kuan’s (Malaysian-born architect) extraordinary vision as to where and how buildings could be situated was incorporated, and as the gardens matured so did the nuts and bolts of the resort.

Today, Begawan Giri Estate is part of Como Hotels & Resorts’ portfolio. Since then new modern “chic” villas have been added to further mark the different phases of this legendary estate.
