PIONEERING RENAULT WOWS AT GOODWOOD

Marking its 20th anniversary in 2013, the Goodwood Festival of Speed hasbecome the UK’s premier automotive event, now attracting 180,000 visitors per

year. Held in glorious sunshine, this year’s festival featured Renault’s biggest presenceyet, showcasing a number of landmark sports vehicles from its 115-year history.

Among the vehicles taking to the hill was the 1902 Type K, one of the earliestracing cars and the first to win Renault an international victory, alongside the1926 40CV ‘des records’ speed trial car with its 9.0-litre engine, the Le Mans-winning Alpine A422B of 1978 and the A310 and 5 Maxi Turbo which deliveredrally victories during the 1970s and 1980s.

The event also showcases a prolific career in Formula 1. Spanning 36 yearsand 11 constructors’ titles, four RB27-powered F1 cars from Lotus, Red BullRacing, Caterham and Williams teams were on display, while the world’s firstturbocharged F1 car, the 1978 RS01, wowed spectators on the hill. Not only didthis set a precedent which meant all others switched to turbo power within threeyears, but as the modern F1 cars shift to 1.6-litre turbocharged V8s next year itsreappearance has never been timelier.

Bringing the brand’s racing heritage up to date, the 100bhp Twizy RenaultsportF1 showed how Formula 1 derived Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) canbe used to give a six-fold power increase to 100bhp in the tuned-up quadricycle, while the mid-engined Twin’Run paid homage to the iconic Clio V6 and 5 MaxiTurbo. Lined up alongside the latest Renault models, it showed a manufacturerwith innovation, excitement and motorsport at its very core.

WHAT’S NEW?

RENAULT WELCOMES CHARGING POINT GRANTSRenault has welcomed the additional Government funding for electric vehicle charge points with the announcement of thewinning bids for additional points to be installed by dozens of local authorities, NHS Trusts and train operators. The announcement

comes after an extra £500m was committed to drive forward the market for ultra low emission vehicles, as part of the Government'splans for roads reform published in July. The coalition government will provide 75% of the cost of installing new chargepoints.

Commenting on its latest initiative, Renault UK’s Ben Fletcher, Electric Vehicle Product Manager, said: ‘The two most commonpreconceptions of electric vehicles are an expensive purchase price and lack of public opportunity to charge.

‘The new ZOE’s pricing puts the first point to rest, and this latest announcement, on top of the established highly developed networkof public charging points, answers the second and allows customers to buy EV with complete confidence.’

DOUBLE WIN ATFLEET WORLDHONOURS

Renault has added a further two awards to its trophycabinet, collecting a pair of titles at the prestigious

2013 Fleet World Honours event in a year where the calibreof entries was described by judges as the highest yet.

Fleet World Managing Editor Ross Durkin said: ‘You reallyhave to take your hat off to the car manufacturers who continueto rise to the challenges set by government and fleet buyersalike. The fleet service providers have also demonstrated anappetite for innovation and it is a real pleasure to recognise theachievements of the best of these.’

Against this stiff competition, the new Clio collected the titleof Best Small Car in recognition of its ‘peppy, efficient engines, funky looks, smart cabin and involving drive’, the judges said.Fellow small Renault, the ZOE, was presented with theTechnology Award, praising the electric supermini’s ability totake electromobility into the mainstream.

Z.E. RANGE SAVES £2,500 IN LONDON CONGESTIONCHARGE FEES

Renault now offers the biggest range of vehiclesexempt from the London Congestion Charge,

following a tightening of the CO2 emissions threshold from 99g/km to 74g/km.

The new Ultra Low Emission Discount replaces the oldGreener Vehicle Discount from the 1st of July. To qualify forfree entry into the congestion charge zone, newly registeredvehicles must emit less than 75g/km and meet the latestEuro 5 emissions standards.

While there will be a three-year ‘sunset period’ during whichcars bought before the 1st July still qualify for the olddiscounts, the change means all newly registered petrol anddiesel models and the majority of hybrids will no longer qualify– affecting some 20,000 drivers in the capital.

Renault’s Z.E. electric vehicle range offers a solution tosuit most of them. Passenger vehicles include the jazzyTwizy two-seater quadricycle, the advanced ZOE superminiand Fluence Z.E. family saloon, sold alongside the KangooVan Z.E. and forthcoming single-seat Twizy Cargo van.Aside from the savings in fuel and tax and reductionin harmful tailpipe emissions, each could also nowsave £2,500 per year in congestion charge fees.

DEALERS GO DIGITALWITH NEW 3D CONFIGURATOR

Renault has launched a new digital tool aimed at helpingcustomers get a more accurate view of their future car.

Now available at 140 of its UK dealers, the remainder are set toget the system soon.

Named ConTact, from “tactile configurator”, the packageenables visitors to fine-tune options on an Apple iPad, with theresults shown on a 42-inch LCD screen alongside a realdemonstrator model. In turn, this allows them to have a 360-degree, three-dimensional view of the car’s interior and exteriorfeatures before ordering. Every Renault model launched orfacelifted in the last year is included.

THE brilliant new ZOE is stylish, affordable and incrediblyversatile: the perfect corporate car for those who do mostlyshort runs, commutes or businesses looking for a strikinggreen flagship for their brand.

Because the car has been designed as electric from the start, rather than adapted from a traditional internal combustionpowered vehicle, driving ZOE requires no compromise fromthe driver. It offers all the space and safety you would expectof a car in this class, allied with the smooth, quiet andresponsive driving experience of an electric vehicle.

With an NEDC homologated range of 130 miles, whichtranslates to around 60 miles in cold weather and 90 milesin temperate conditions, ZOE also fits the daily needs of alarge proportion of drivers – with a typical user only needingto charge three times a week.

Talking of recharging, ZOE is the only electric vehicle tofeature the Chameleon charger. Patented by Renault, thisgives great flexibility and ensures that you can always makethe most of the power source available. Charging batteriesat a public charging station takes between 30 minutes and 9hours, depending on the power source, but the most commonpoints would give a full charge in 3-4 hours.

And as there’s a free domestic wall-box, which gives a fullcharge in 3-4 hours, included with ZOE, home-charging ismade easy too.

The electric motor has a power output of 65kW, equivalent to88hp, and instantly delivers maximum torque of 220Nm.Acceleration and pull-away are responsive from low speeds, while its top speed is limited to 84 mph. Driving is morerelaxing too, thanks to the silent ride and smooth, gearshift-free acceleration.

ZOE is available in three trim levelsand is packed with a raftof innovations. The sleek supermini has the innovative R-Linkmultimedia system fitted as standard, delivering integratedconnectivity with motoring services and applications.

However, possibly the most ground-breaking element of ZOEis the price: starting at just £13,995 (after the UK Plug-In CarGrant), it’s comparable to its diesel-engined competition. Thefuture starts here!

THE new Captur is arguably the most stylish, versatile, frugaland keenly priced addition to the supermini crossovermarket yet.

16 TIMES AROUNDTHE WORLD...AND STILL GOING!

J&D Couriers’ amazing Renault vans do incredible fault-free distances, with one Master hitting 400,000 miles.

400,000 MILES......and counting

12-13_Reliability_RENBUS_Aug13:Layout 1 2/8/13 20:15 Page 1

12 13

It may not look spick and span, but neither might you if you’d been

round the world 16 times, or been to themoon and were halfway back again. Butthat is the incredible distances recordachieved by a Renault Master on the fleetof family-run firm J&D Couriers, nearDroitwitch. And what’s more, it’s never gonewrong in all those thousands of miles.

Dan Abley (pictured), whose grandfatherand father Julian founded the company, said:‘We’ve always run Renaults as long as I canremember, and this particular van has neverhad a spanner on it other than for regularinterval services, cam belts and a newgearbox, which would be expected on thatmileage, and it has just hit 400,000 miles.’

‘We run Kangoos too, and we love them, because they’re exactly the same. Just changeto oil in them and they keep going and going.

‘We run our fleet with the approach thatwe buy the vans new and run them until theydie, and that’s why we use Renaults becausenothing unexpected ever happens to them. We’ve had some other brands and they getniggles and other problems, but with theRenaults, and this Master, it’s a Godsend, theperfect van. We’ve also got a Trafic that hasjust reached 300,000 miles, and we’venever had a problem with that either.

‘That’s why we do much prefer Renault, because when you get something that doesthe job, you stick with it.

‘The worst thing in our industry is that wecan have is a phone call in the middle of theday saying a van’s broken down, and thatmean deliveries and schedules would be putback, and clients would be waiting for us.But by running Renaults, that’s a call we’venever had.’

Renault performs in Germanreliability survey.

When the Automobile GermanADAC club published the results of its

annual reliability survey Pannenstatistik, every Renault was ranked either good orexcellent.

The ADAC (Allgemeiner DeutscherAutomobil-Club e.V.) is Germany's andEurope's largest automobile club, with morethan 18 million members. Every year itanalyses its independent breakdown andreliability statistics and rates as many as 500models on the roads.

Every Renault model included in thesurvey continues to be considered “good” or“excellent”, and the notations were madestricter by the ADAC this year. All resultsremain positive, even after six years of use, which demonstrates the long-lastingreliability of the Renault vehicles.

‘The reliability of our vehicles is afundamental element, which we arepermanently engraving in our genes. Wehave to pursue more than ever our efforts toguarantee the satisfaction of our customersall around the world,’ said Jean-PierreVallaude, Senior VP Quality.

INTERVIEW

14-15_LVDAcker_RENBUS_Aug13:Layout 1 2/8/13 20:18 Page 1

14 15

Renault’s Senior Vice President, Corporate Design, Laurens Van Den Acker, hasheaded up a styling revolution across the latest models, and believes visualappeal is just as important for company car drivers as the technology underneath.

A DESIGN FOR LIFE

In the three years since Renault presented its newfamily face as the DeZir concept car, the range has

evolved rapidly, growing to include its widest ever choice ofmodels, each with some of the highest quality, reliability andefficiency in their segments, and wrapped in an instantlyrecognisable new style.

Recognising the need for this final point is director ofdesign Laurens Van Den Acker.Appointed in 2009, he’s been theproject leader behind a revolution inRenault’s car design. A process whichstarted with identifying the brand’scultural background and ambitions, before finding ways to embed this intoeverything it produces.

‘Design is important,’ he says. ‘Asmuch as fleets are concerned withrunning costs, I believe design is still abig part of the decision-making processfor a company car driver. So for me itwas important to make sure Renault’smodel range was as desirable visuallyas the technology underneath deserves to be, allowing all ofthe vehicles to appeal to both head and heart.

‘This has always been a brand with a spirit of innovationand that is not about to change. It has also always been abrand with a strong design standpoint – that won't changeeither. However, I knew I would like to break away from theway the brand's values are expressed.’

The Dutch-born designer has a wealth of internationalknowledge to draw on. A former designer at Audi, Mazdaand Ford, his career has taken him all over the world, exposing him to the multitude of cultural influences fromwhere he could start.

In Renault’s case, Van Den Acker wanted to reflect atradition of innovation, but to reflect how as a mass-marketmanufacturer Renault’s model range is also a core part ofpeople’s lives. This theme of the human life cycle hasinfluenced every concept car and model launch in the fouryears since – each unique, but showing a distinctive, eye-catching new design.

‘I wanted to bring greater coherence to the line-up,’ hesays. ‘Renault creates cars that are pertinent to every stage

in the human life cycle. Based on this idea, we created adaisy with six petals, in order to establish strong ties withour customers, and each is represented by a concept car.

‘Life starts with falling in love, as illustrated by the DeZirconcept, before exploring the world together in an SUV orcrossover – such as the Captur. R-Space then demonstratesthe founding of a family, while the Frendzy commercial

vehicle shows the world of work.‘In short, this “daisy” is focused on

life and on people. It is a strategy full ofpassion and emotion, with a languagebased on human forms: simple, sensualand warm.’

Crucially, though, the brand’s recentconcept cars have done more thansimply reflect unobtainable dreams of adesign team. It means the samedesigners behind the concept car arenow tasked with bringing it to ashowroom-ready reality without losingits identity in the process.

‘I realised that we needed a strongconnection between concept cars and the productioncars,’ he says. ‘A concept car is over exaggerated fromall points of view. For example, super large wheels, asturdy profile, sacrificed spaciousness, in other words, anything that will impress. A mass production car answersto a daily need. What is at stake for us is that the spirit ofthe concept remains.’

The end results are already making changes at the coreof the Renault range. Elements of the DeZir concept reachedshowrooms in the Twizy and fourth-generation Clio, whilethe rugged muscularity and two-tone body of the Capturconcept has closely informed the production car of the samename. Meanwhile, the prominent Renault diamond andhorizontal grille design are finding their way onto an ever-wider cross-section of the range.

And Van Den Acker believes this focus on design willcontinue to reap rewards: ‘It takes a lot of talent – not justdesigners – we need talented model-makers, planners, engineers, communicators, product people... it's a teameffort. But if the job is well done it can really have an impacton the company.’

RENAULT MÉGANE FORMULA 1 TECHNOLOGY FOR YOUR FLEET

WHETHER it’s the outgoing V8 or the forthcoming V6 Power Unit due for its debutnext year, Renaultsport is renowned offering high performance from a smallcapacity engine. A third of the 2013 grid used powerplants developed by Renault’sengineers, making the carmaker a backbone of this globally recognised sport.

With engineers shared across road and motorsport engines, that sameexpertise quickly finds its way into production models. The Mégane featuresa range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines under the Energy family, all offering at least the same power and torque as their predecessors despitea drop in capacity. With one of the highest average horsepower per litrefigures of any volume manufacturer, driver pleasure is guaranteed.

FORMULA 1 engines operate at incredibly high loads. Theoutgoing V8 revs to 18,000rpm over long periods during arace, and Renault has a proven record for reliability in thesport. With the new rules in 2014, each team will only beallowed five units to last the full 19 rounds of thechampionship.

This makes motorsport the ideal proving ground fordevelopments which inform real-world reliability. TheMégane has scored highly in reliability studies carried out byFrench magazine L’Automobile and the German recoverycompany ADAC’s breakdown statistics for 2012, provingRenault’s ongoing drive for quality is reapingrewards. Its long 18,000-miles, or twoyear, service intervals are a signof its durability and keepSMR costs down too.

A prolific career in Formula 1 has offered an extreme environment for Renault to test innovationsnow employed in the Mégane family, resulting in a whole grid of real-world benefits for fleets.

MOTORSPORT may not be known for its green credentials, butlarge fuel tanks add unnecessary weight and carry a performancesacrifice. It means Renault’s F1 engines are designed to use aslittle fuel as possible without affecting the overall power output.

This is just as valuable on the road. Using F1-derived low-friction internals and ancillaries, with a downsized engine anddirect fuel injection, the Mégane is able to offer some of thebest fuel efficiency figures in its segment. RENAULT was one of the first manufacturers to introduce a Kinetic EnergyRecovery System (KERS) in Formula 1 back in 2009. The systemharnessed energy which would otherwise be lost as heat, storing it aselectricity which can be used to provide a power boost when required. For the 2014 season, this will be able to provide up to 160bhp of electricalassistance under heavy acceleration.

Not only is this applicable to Renault’s electric vehicles, but theMégane uses it too. Its advanced energy recovery system is able torecharge the battery while the car is slowing down. Paired with a newStop & Start system, this alone offers a 5% improvement in fuel economywith reductions in running costs for drivers and fleet operators alike.

Wren’s Renaults fit the jobThe fast-expanding kitchen company has movedto a solus Renault fleet.

Wren Kitchens, based in Howden, East Yorkshire,is the UK's fastest growing designer, manufacturerand retailer of fully assembled kitchen cabinets.

As a result, its fleet is having to expand quicklyto keep up with demand, and it has been usingRenault vans and cars to do this.

Initially, Wren took delivery of 35 Kangoo vanspainted in their corporate Wren green at the end of2011, and ordered a further 10 Kangoos in April ofthis year. But such is the pace of change that it hashad to increase its fleet still further: a further 14Kangoo vans plus 22 Mégane Sport Tourers will bedelivered in September 2013.

While the numbers may not seem large comparedto some fleets, there is a bigger story: each newKangoo is ordered when a new Wren store is openedsomewhere in the UK, so that designers and supportstaff can visit customers. That’s quite an expansion.

It’s a company that has grown very fast to a £200million turnover business, having bucked the trend ina sector very hard hit by the recession, with a highlyadvanced logistics and distribution network, and storesthroughout the country. It is now a solus Renaultvehicle fleet too, with its size having grown from 20 to90-plus vehicles in the space of three years.

Additionally Wren is now looking to roll outRenault Trafic as part of a franchise package to itssub contracted kitchen fitters which could see afurther 30-40 vehicles ordered over the next 12months, all with Wren branding.

Armando Sanchez, managing director of WrenKitchen & Bedrooms commented: ‘We're a fast-growing company delivering a stylish, quality productwith great customer service, and Renault's productsand its people suit our dependable approach andburgeoning position in the market perfectly.’

It’s a Great British business success story, and onethat Renault is proud to be helping happen.

CUTTING COSTS...

Based on the same platform as the Sandero, butextended 45mm in wheelbase and 434mm overall, theLogan MCV lives up to its Maximum Capacity Vehiclebadge by offering an unprecedented load area for a B-segment car. A capacity of 573 litres with the seats upputs it only two litres behind the much larger Volvo V70,rising to 1,518 litres with the 60/40 rear bench foldedforward. That’s more than most C-segment estates canmuster, let alone direct rivals or even small MPVs.

Not only is it spacious, but the Logan MCV features alow load lip and wide rear opening, allowing items up to2.7 metres in length to fit easily inside. All models get60/40 split folding rear benches, and an additional 16litres of extra storage space is provided by cubby holes, storage trays and door bins spread around the cabin.

Dacia has already won fans for its infinitely affordable Sandero andDuster, and that same focus on high value is just as evident in the LoganMCV. Despite its considerably more luggage space, a mere £1,000 separatesthe much larger Logan MCV from its Sandero sibling. The entry-level Accesscosts an unbelievable £6,995 on the road, and the range tops out at £10,795for the most efficient, best-equipped Laureate 1.5 dCi 90.

But high value doesn’t mean low equipment. The biggest-selling Laureatefeatures an MP3-compatible CD player with Bluetooth®, USB and auxiliaryconnections, cruise control, air conditioning, heated and electrically adjustablemirrors and front and rear electric windows, while leather upholstery and thetouch-screen MediaNav infotainment system are offered as low-cost options. Allcars also get anti-lock brakes with Emergency Brake Assist and Electronic StabilityControl as standard, with front and side airbags included across the range.

No corners have been cut when it comes to the LoganMCV’s drivetrains. These include 90bhp petrol and dieselengines, both equipped with an eco mode which adjustsclimate control and engine settings for a 10-15%improvement in fuel efficiency, and a gearshift indicatorto help drivers get the most miles per gallon of fuel.

The most efficient of the range is the 1.5-litre dCi 90,a derivative of the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s biggest-selling engine which returns 74.3mpg and emits99g/km on the combined cycle. Petrol options are noless advanced, including the new TCe 90. Debuted onthe new Renault Clio, this turbocharged three-cylinderengine displaces just 900cc but offers a versatile 90bhp,while achieving 56.5mpg and emitting 116g/km CO2.

AFFORDABLE FOR LIFEThe Logan MCV is as much a game-changer when it comes to pricing as the rest of the Dacia stable. In the most popularLaureate trim, this spacious load-carrier boasts a £9,740 P11d price for the TCe 90 petrol, or £10,740 for the dCi 90 diesel.

Even traditional value brands such as Škoda can’t come close. The equivalent Fabia Estate comes in at £3,600 more thanthe Logan MCV, despite offering less load space with the seats up or down. MPVs aren’t safe either, with the Hyundai ix20costing a full £4,400 more than the Dacia and still falling down on interior capacity.

COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Renault has created perhaps the most unusual light commercial vehicle on themarket. Unlike the heavy-duty Master or the mid-weight Trafic and Kangoo, Renault’s

Twizy Cargo is powered solely by electricity, and by removing the rear seat from the Twizyurban runabout, room has been made for a 180 litre load-carrying compartment.

With a 75kg payload and a lockable load compartment, the Twizy Cargo offers aninteresting alternative take on urban distribution, particularly for style-conscious citycompanies and those keen to promote a green corporate message.

Thanks to its 17hp electric motor the Twizy easily keeps pace with town traffic, itscompact dimensions making it easy to thread between larger delivery vehicles and to parkat the roadside, where the compact Renault can be parked end-on in a standard car space.Top speed is up to 56mph, so the Twizy can hold its own on larger roads too, though it is atits best in the urban environment.

The lockable storage area makes the Twizy Cargo an ideal micro-van for the likes of ITsupport services or for smaller parcel delivery couriers. Its ease of use also means that thelight commercial could also find favour as a perfect pizza or take-away food delivery model.

Priced at just £6,241 plus VAT, which can of course be reclaimed by VAT registeredcompanies on a car-derived van, the Twizy Cargo is £650 less expensive than the peoplecarrying model. Battery hire deals start from just £36 per month, with VAT again beingreclaimable on the hire deal for companies.

TWIZY CARGO DELIVERS!

The brilliant new Twizy Cargo offers fleets an innovative solutionto lightweight, low-emission load carrying and deliveries.

22-23_LCV_RENBUS_Aug13:Layout 1 2/8/13 20:23 Page 1

A single charge offers up to62 miles of range, though

Renault believes that real worldconditions will see customers using the Twizy for up to 50 milesbetween charges. The commercial can be topped up once it reachesits destination, thanks to a built-in charging cable and a standard three-pin plug. A full charge takes around three and a half hours and, depending on your electrical supply deal, should cost around £1.

What’s more, the zero-emission Twizy Cargo incurs no CongestionCharge within the centre of London, contributing to customer costsavings and reducing emissions for all road users in the Capital.

While the Twizy Cargo is available in four standard colours - white, black orange and blue, Renault has recently launched a customisationprocess that allows customers to have parts of the vehicle professionallywrapped, to provide a marketing statement on the move. Prices startfrom £250 for the doors to £395 for the doors and frames, and go rightup to £795 for the whole vehicle. A colour configurator is available atwww.renault.co.uk/dyot, allowing customers to see how the vehicle willlook with a variety of designs and colours applied.

For small businesses or large national chains, the Twizy Cargoprovides a unique, low cost urban delivery solution unlike any other LCV.

R-LINK BOOSTS RENAULT LCVs...Renault’s innovative R-Link multimedia technology, initially being installed in Clio, ZOE and Captur cars, isnow also available to commercial vehicle users, throughthe latest Kangoo van. R-Link is standard equipment ontop of the range Kangoo Sport vans and a £675 ex.VAToption on core Kangoo models.

R-Link brings together all of the vehicle’s media functionsin a single screen. This includes radio, audio streaming,Bluetooth® telephone connectivity and Carminat TomTomsatellite navigation. However, the system is not purely fordriver enjoyment, there are very real business benefits to behad from using the technology.

R-Link provides access to TomTom Live Services, including real-time traffic information for route selectionand delay avoidance, helping customers to save time andfuel, whilst maximising productivity.

Renault’s Eco driving menu is incorporated, with an EcoCoaching function that provides drivers with personalisedtips on how to improve their driving and fuel economy.

Customers can also access a special application store, where they can add functionality to R-Link, to meet theindividual needs of their business. eg. email addresses.

Voice commands can also be used to activate audioand telephone functions, while a Text To Speech functionautomatically reads out text messages and RSS feedsonce the vehicle is in motion, allowing the driver to focuson the road ahead.

WHEN fitted to theKangoo Z.E., R-Linkalso delivers additionalinformation on availablerange and battery charge. The TomTom Live navigation system provides thedriver with a graphic display of how far the van cantravel on the current electrical charge, and can directdrivers to the nearest recharging facility. In additionthe system can recommend the route that offers themost economical use of the vehicle.

Through the My Z.E. Connect service pack, drivers canalso access the vehicle remotely, through a smartphoneor computer, to assess and control battery charge level, estimated remaining range, time remaining to fullcharge and charging status.

...AND ENHANCES KANGOO Z.E. TOO

MOTORSPORT

Renault is the only manufacturer to offer a complete range of electric vehicles, so unsurprisinglyFormula 1 isn’t only a testing ground for conventional engine technology. The 2014 Power Unit usesthe most advanced energy recovery system yet, featuring two electric motor-generators and abattery. Knowledge gained on track will be used to help develop next-generation electric vehicledrivetrains, and to advance similar systems for petrol and diesel vehicles.

On deceleration, the electric motors act as generators. Connected to the turbocharger and enginecrankshaft, they recapture energy which would otherwise be lost as heat to recharge the car’sbattery. This can then be used to drive the motors while accelerating, providing a 160bhp powerboost at the crankshaft and spinning the turbocharger quicker to avoid turbo lag at low revs, resultingin torque output closer to the old V8 F1 engine. The whole process is controlled by an intelligentenergy management system, which decides the most efficient way to use the two motors.

ELECTRIC MOTORS

A dominant force in Formula 1 for over 35 years, Renaultsport’s engineering expertise isn’tjust winning races, it’s helping to deliver efficient, reliable and fun-to-drive road vehicles too.

Renault proved the benefits of downsizing in the late 1970s when it became the first manufacturer to enter a small capacityturbocharged Formula 1 car, becoming so successful that the rest of the grid quickly followed suit. The technology has movedon in the 30 years since, but the 2014 Power Unit takes a similar approach. Despite being a third smaller in capacity than theoutgoing 2.4-litre V8, the new 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 produces more power while reducing fuel consumption by 40%.

The carmaker’s roadgoing vehicles are experiencing the same revolution. Although the latest generation of Energy petrol anddiesel engines are smaller than their predecessors, which helps contribute to a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2

emissions, the use of turbocharging allows them to offer more power and torque than the units they replace. Like the PowerUnit, these all use direct fuel injection to offer a precisely controlled and highly efficient combustion process.

DOWNSIZING & TURBOCHARGING

24-25_MSPORT_RENBUS_Aug13:Layout 1 2/8/13 20:49 Page 1

Unveiled at the 71st Monaco Grand Prix,Renault’s race-ready Twin’Run concept plays

homage to the manufacturer’s mid-engined motorsportchampions of old, while previewing the styling cues ofa future city car.

Twin’Run represents the fifth element of Laurens VanDen Acker’s design strategy, finished in electric bluedenoting its position as a car for ‘Play’ and withRenault’s latest design language. Yet despite itsmodernity, the Twin’Run has close DNA links to theiconic mid-engined R5 Maxi Turbo rally car of the1980s, inheriting its flat, square headlamps, spotlampsand flared rear arches with red accents.

It’s also built to be raced. Underneath bodyworkmade from glass-polyester composite and carbon fibreis a tubular, motorsport-derived chassis with a mid-mounted 320bhp V6 engine, just like the Clio V6. Thissonorous six-cylinder is based on the unit found in theMegane Trophy Racer, and with a kerb weightmatching the Twingo at 950kg, it gives the compactracer giant-killing abilities on track.

‘Twin'Run embodies the mad genius Renault hasbeen known for over the decades, to the delight ofmotor sports enthusiasts. No one has forgotten the R5Turbo and the Clio V6. Twin’Run is the true heir of thoseracing cars that had so much appeal,’ says Axel Breun,Head of Concept Car Design.

TWIN’RUN BRIDGES GAP

24 25

Pursuing ever-higher performance, Formula 1 engineershave worked hard to minimise the energy used to rotate theinternals of an engine, known as pumping losses. Low-frictioncoatings on moving parts and a variable oil pump help minimiseunnecessary engine load during races, but that same technologyis used to widen the gap between fill-ups on the road, too.

Motorsport has also donated its unique thermal managementtechnology to Renault’s road cars. Coolant is flowed through eachcylinder independently, requiring a smaller and more efficientwater pump and for hot areas to be cooled more efficiency. In turn, this allows power outputs to be raised for smaller engines withoutaffecting reliability. Engineering used to build engines capable of15,000rpm in race conditions is also helping Renault to make thepetrol and diesel engines of its cars and vans more durable too.

The new 1.6-litre turbochargedV6 produces more powerwhile reducing fuelconsumption by 40%
