M.P.S. - Masters in Preservation Studies

The Tulane School of Architecture Masters of Preservation Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary opportunity to learn the essentials of preservation practice in one of America’s most historic cities. New Orleans is a textbook for experiencing first hand the result of over sixty years of historic preservation legislation. The MPS program builds upon the design-strength of the School of Architecture and the expertise of its faculty and their commitment to the immediate community, the nation, and the Gulf-Caribbean Region. The comprehensive curriculum is composed of core courses offered by the School of Architecture in concert with courses offered by other departments on campus. This curriculum, combined with a student designed practicum, ensures that those interested in historic preservation receive the education that meets their individual needs and desires. This broad, interdisciplinary approach prepares graduates to occupy positions of leadership in com-munity preservation and cultural heritage development.

Graduate Programs in Architecture

M.Arch. I, First Professional Degree: 3½ Years

The Master of Architecture (M.Arch I) is a professional degree program for students who have already received a previous college degree in a non-architecture major. The student’s first experience with design educa-tion is the summer program, a twelve-week fast-paced and rigorous experience, with lecture courses introducing the student to issues in both technology and design, with an intensive design studio, and with an emphasis on the rich possibilities of the City of New Orleans and the region as a design stimulus.

M.Arch. I, Advanced Standing, First Professional Degree: 2 Years

The professional degree of Master of Architecture with “Advanced Standing” is for students who have already received a previous college degree in a 4-year (pre-professional) architecture major. In most cases, Advanced Standing M.Arch I students enter into Year 2 of the 3½ year M.Arch I degree program.

M.Arch. II, Graduate Post-Professional Degree: 1 Year

The M.Arch II degree program offers independent, advanced study in architecture for individuals already holding a 5-year professional archi-tecture degree. The program allows students the opportunity to focus on research and study in a special interest area and develop an individual study program around their thesis topic. In recent years, many of those enrolled in the program have been international students, adding to the diversity of the student body.

At the tulane school of Architecture

we envision a generation of architects dedicated to rebuild-ing the civic realm in America, crafting those buildings, places, and institutions that create healthy, vibrant, vital, and sustainable cities. Using the extremely rich environ-mental, historic and cultural landscape of New Orleans as a laboratory, now framed by the effects of a natural and human-produced catastrophe, the professional architectural programs engage all of our students directly in an ongoing effort to reconsider and rebuild this city. Students learn that architects are uniquely suited to lead our nation toward an urban renaissance. Their part in that process begins here. Community outreach and other forms of urban engage-ment through design investigations, community planning work, building construction, and preservation practices are integral to our mission.

Many urban engagement opportunities are available to stu-dents through our community outreach programs, including the Tulane City Center, the Tulane School of Architecture URBANbuild program, the Tulane Regional Urban Design Center and the Preservation Studies Summer Field School and other aspects of the Preservation program.
