1 Background, PRIZM®LightTurn

® Application

• Traditional MPO based parallel optic modules required too much

space for dense embedded optic architectures and were too expensive

• Development of optical photonic turn connectors facilitate:

• Smaller and lower cost modules

• Higher density optical connectivity at the card edge

• No polish and low cost termination

• Removable, multi-fiber connector interface for next generation

small form factor parallel optical module

and bends 90º coming out through the exit

window.

• Defects on the lens array or the exit

window can deteriorate transmission

power.

• The guide pins allow precise positioning

of the lens array to the receiver module.

• At the exit window, the light spot diameter is 180µm.

• PRIZM exit spot area is 13X larger than fiber exit spot

• PRIZM is less sensitive to defects

• Inspection requirements are less stringent

2 Design Overview, Exit Window Inspection Requirements

Allowable Defects Allowable Scratches

• ≤ 700 µm2 cumulative area per exit

window lens outline (equivalent to ≤ 30

µm diameter circle)

• Defects <5µm diameter are acceptable

and are not included in the cumulative

diameter

• ≤12 µm scratch width

• No limit on scratch length

• Total of 1 scratch allowed per exit window lens

outline

• Scratches <5µm width are acceptable and are not

included in the cumulative number of scratches

• The PRIZM ferrule losses were measured, under various “defect” conditions to determine performance specifications for the ferrule exit window.

2 Design Overview, Design And Operation

• Cleaner works with both ribbon and

round hardware

• Connectors can be installed either on

the left or right side of the cleaner

• Saddle is spring loaded so as to control

the amount of force the fabric exerts on

the cleaner

• The rounded tip on the “Holding Arm”

helps center the connector

4 Conclusions

• Developed a cleaning tool for the PRIZM®LightTurn

®

Connector.

• Cleaner does not induce scratch when cleaning dust, lint

or oil.

• Cleaner was designed to clean on one click, sometimes a

2nd pass is required

• Will continue to optimize cleaner to minimize need for a

2nd cleaning pass.
