Weatherboard External Cladding Systems (the systems).

Considerations When Designing
Youmustensurethattheprojectfallswithinthescopeofthesystems(refertotheHumePinePinecladandPinetrimXTVertical
Weatherboard External Cladding Systems pass™).
PleasenotethatwhilstE2/AS1allowsforfacefixedinstallationwheretheriskmatrixislessthanorequalto6,HumePinerecommends
thatthesystemsarealwaysinstalledoveradrainedandventilatedcavity.
Youmustalsoconsiderthefollowingindicativelist:
• Exposurezones/durabilityrequirementsofallfastenings;
• Windzone/specificwindpressure;
• Climatezone;
• Locationofbuildingon-siteandproximitytorelevantboundaries;
• ComplianceofthebuildingworkwithallrelevantprovisionsoftheNewZealandBuildingCode,includingbutnotlimitedto
• Suitabilityoftheexistingbuilding,
• Structuralframingrequirementsduringtheconstructionphaseandoncecompleted;
• RiskcalculationusingtheE2/AS1riskmatrix;and
• Othermaterialslikelytoaffecttheproduct’sperformance.
Thedetailsdonotrefertospecifictradebrandsoffixings,buildingwrap,rigidairbarrier,orsealingtape.Youmustensurethatselected
productscomplywiththeNewZealandBuildingCodeandaresuitableforthespecificbuildingproject.

WhereRBWprovisionsapply,youmustensurethatyouareabletomeetyourobligations.
Handling
Hume Pine (NZ) Ltd. recommends that the products are unloaded by hand. Long lengths should be carried on edge, not on their flat.
Ifmechanicalmeansareused,ensurethatthereisaminimumoftwowell-spacedpointstoavoidexcessivebendingorsagging.
Where using a crane, you may need to consider a spreader bar.
Storage
Ifstoredon-site,theproductmustbestackedflatonadrysurface,atleast150mmoffthegroundandundercover.Thedunnage
strapped to the bottom of the packet and associated packaging material is for transport purposes only and is not suitable for use
ason-sitestorage.
Ensuretheareawheretheproductisstoredisdry,well-ventilated,andoutofdirectsunlight.
Health & Safety
Takeallnecessarystepstoensureyoursafetyandthesafetyofothers,including:
• Ensuringadequateventilationormechanicaldustextractionwhencuttingordrilling;
• Ensuringthetimberiswellsupportedwhencuttingandnailing;
• Wearingappropriatesafetyequipment,clothingandfootwear;
• Usingalltoolsinaccordancewithrelevantinstructionmanuals;
• Planningandmonitoringasafeapproachforworkingatheightincludingselectingandusingtherightequipment;
• Clearingtheworkareaofanyobstructionsbeforeworkstarts.

Installation Requirements
Refer to the typical details at the end of this Design and Installation Guide to assist in the installation of the systems.
Thefollowingrequirementsmustbesatisfied:
Framing & Flexible Underlay or Rigid Air Barrier
Priortoinstallingthesystemsensure:
• TheframingandunderlayorrigidairbarrierhasbeeninstalledsothatitcomplieswiththeNewZealandBuildingCode(fornew
buildingwork)orissuitablefortheinstallationofthesystems(forexistingbuildings);
• FramingtolerancesareinaccordancewithSection2.1,NZS3604:2011;
• Moisturecontentoftheframingisnogreaterthan18%;
• Theframingandunderlayhavebeeninstalledinaccordancewithrelevantspecificationorsupplierinformation;
• Arigidairbarrier(inaccordancewithTable23ofE2/AS1)hasbeeninstalledinunlinedgablesandwalls;
• UnderlayinaccordancewithParagraph9.1.3.4ofE2/AS1hasbeeninstalledinattachedgarages.

Ensurethatallmaterialsarecompatibleinaccordancewith:

of the systems.
ThesebattensmustbeinstalledinaccordancewithBRANZBulletinBU582[April201]Structurally Fixed Cavity Battens
(refertowww.branz.co.nz).
Battensmustbestructurallyfixedtothewallframingat300mmcentresor1nailperstudand2nailspernogwith:
• 60mmx2.8mmgalvanisedjoltheadnails,or
• Power-driven60mmx2.87mmgalvanisednails,or
• Power-driven64mmx2.8mmstainlesssteelannular-groovednails.
Aluminium Joinery
Aluminiumjoineryandflashingsmustbeinstalledinaccordancewiththemanufacturer’sinstructions.
A7.5mm–10mmnominalgapmustbeleftbetweentherevealandwallframingtoallowaPEFrodandairsealtobeinstalled
inaccordancewithParagraph9.1.6ofE2/AS1.
Weatherboards
Priortoinstallingthesystems:
• Ensurethemoisturecontentoftheproductsisnogreaterthan16%.Allowtodryifnecessary.
• Checktheproductsforanydefectsordamageandremoveanydirt,dust,orstones.
• Ensureallcutends,edges,andareaswherethesuppliedcoatinghasbeendamagedaresandedsmooth,endsealedandrecoated.
For Pinetrim XT only quality acrylic primer and top coat systems may be used.
• HumePinerecommendsthatallnailfixingsarepre-drilled,especiallyinareasaroundjoinsandtheendofboardswithadiameter
a minimum of 1mm smaller than the nail gauge.
Installingthesystems:
• Weatherboardsaretobefixedwith:
• Galvanized60mmx2.80mmjoltheadnailsembeddedaminimumof20mmintowallframingwhereinstalledover
structurally fixed battens, or
• Galvanized75mmx3.15mmjoltheadnailsembeddedaminimumof30mmintowallframingwherethebattenisnot
structurally fixed.
• Checkthataminimum2mmgapbetweenweatherboardshasbeenachieved.
• Weatherboardsshouldbefixedsothattheweathergrooveontherebatefaceoftheweatherboardmatchestheweathergroove
in the back edge of the lap face.
• Handnailingisrecommendedasnailgunscancausedamagetothefaceandbackoftheboard.

• Nailatanupwardangletopreventwatermovementdownthenailintothewallspace.Allnailsshouldbepunchedtoadepth
of3mm–4mm.Holesshouldbefilledimmediatelywithasuitableexteriorfiller.Allnailsmustbefilledimmediatelyafter
installation,withasuitableexteriorfiller,topreventmoisturedamage,priortocoatingofthesystem.
Ground Clearances
• FinishedfloorlevelmusthaveminimumclearancesinaccordancewithE2/AS1andNZS3604:2011.
• Weatherboardsmustoverhangtheconcreteslabandbottomplatebyaminimumof50mminaccordancewithTable18ofE2/AS1.
• Thebottomedgeoftheweatherboardsmustbe:
• Keptclearofadjacentsurfaces,and
• Aminimumof35mmabovethetop-surfaceofadjacentflashingsatdeckorlowpitchroof/walljunctions.
Finishing
• ForPineclad,aprimerundercoatandtwotopcoatsofhigh-gradeacrylicoroil-basedpaintmustbeappliedtothesystem.
• ForPinetrimXT,twotopcoatsofhigh-gradeacrylicpaintmustbeappliedtothesystem.
• Paintmustbeappliedinaccordancewiththemanufacturer’sinstructions.Darkcolours,withaLightreflectiveValue(LRV)less
than45%shouldbeavoidedastheyabsorbheatandcouldcauseexcessivemovement,distortion,orresinbleed.

Thefollowingtypicaldetailsandnailingpatternshavebeenpreparedtoassistinthespecificationandinstallationofthesystems
anddemonstratecompliancewiththeNZBuildingCode.ThisinformationisconsistentwithAcceptableSolutionE2/AS1,BRANZ
GoodPracticeGuideforTimberCladdingandthetestassemblyusedtotesttoE2/VM1.
Thedetailsaredescribedastypicalastherearedesignoptionsandminorvariationsthatmayberequired.Whereusedinconjunction
withothercladdingsystems,thedesignermustassurethemselvesthatthejunctionwillmeetallrelevantBuildingCodeprovisions
includingthoseofClauseE2ExternalMoistureoftheNZBuildingCode.
