SCREEN DETAIL51% perforated steel for outer-most wall, fairly transparent.13% perforated steel for inner-most wall, less transparent.Possible screen options below.
PROCESS DIAGRAMEvolution of the box into an art park.
The art park in Holyoke is designed to represent a box which is tucked under the bridge, using the columns for alignment. The driving idea of the project was to have a highly articulated architectural space but keep the rest of the landscape preserved and reinforced with oxygen cleaning plants.
The Art Box is open on two sides to create a tube-like form, allowing light to enter the stage and exhibition area. Using a grid system as a guide, spaces are carved out of the box. The resulting spaces are designed so that a user may interact with the space and define it how they choose. This is the second key idea of the project: allowing the user to interact with the structure. For example, spaces may be used to display art or it might be used to house tables for an event. Slots in the stage floor allow panels to be snapped into place as to stand upright. The panels would consist of a metal structure and a light material for art to be hung upon.
The corner of the box is carved away to make room for a wheelchair ramp. The wall on the south side is also taken out and replaced by a perforated steel sheet. The steel sheets flank each side of the ramp. A 13% transparent perforated sheet is on the inner-most side while a 51% transparent perforated sheet is on the outer-most side. This allows viewers to see the interior of the ramp and the screen behind it, while the inner-most screen keeps any performances relatively private. These screens also continue the form of the box to the southern corner. Sections of the box are cut out to create diversity in the form. These cuts are highlighted with vibrant colors, as per request by people in Holyoke.
As an armature for participation, it seems only fitting that an activity is made to engage the community. The activity is for the community to participate in a concrete casting class and cast several seats that are in the shape of the art box. These small boxes can then be painted by the community to look however they would like. These boxes would remain on site but moved around as seen fit.

PRECEDENT STUDYShanghai Carpet - Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP
The Shanghai Carpet by SOM served as a landscape precedent study for the
Art Box project. Certain parts of the Shanghai Carpet are on flat ground and must create a visual landscape
using more than grasses. The Patterns of tile and various materials inspired the pattern for the pathways around
the Art Box. The Art Box uses multiple materials in the pathway such as grass pavers and traditional concrete pavers.

FRAMING THE VIEW
When looking from the front of the Art Box, the hollow structure creates a frame of the city behind it. This subtle but striking feature is meant to praise the city it belongs to. The brick mills in the background are part of Holyoke’s heritage and should be remembered as essential building blocks, much like the diverse people of Holyoke.

Below the I-391 interstate highway overpass that adjoin three surrounding neighborhood in an industrial area, Holyoke Art Park is a place to re-establish the connections between these parts of the divided township whilst regenerating a communal space for its people.
An open-air cinema is plants its screen in between the existing posts of highway structure and claims the site for urban cultural and artistic activity. But cinema is only the opportunity, a wide variety of activities ranging from theatre over installation, performance, architecture, radio to new media and well beyond, have meanwhile joined the urban caravan.
In hope to maximize the functionalities with least amount of site adjustments, three wall panels were proposed to constrcut on top of the preceding frameworks as infrastructures that implement a range of services within. The open site plan provides flexibility to its usage and ability to accomodate any events and programs in the future according to the needs.

Unusual but similar to Holyoke Art Park in its scope and atmosphere, PleinOPenair festival program puts into perspective the issues surrounding certain urban sites and offers a chance to build bridges with other urban activists and movements, all while developing a creative practice that can be expressed in the public sphere.
The ideology and material applications of the Lourve-Lens speak of an intergrative transparency that associated with light and reflections, where the reflections of the exhbits as well as of the visitors on the aluminium wall lead to a special relationship between observer and object.
Exit from I-391, this is the city gateway that welcomes everyone upon entering Holyoke. This colorful artistic neon sign of Holyoke Art Park may become an instant landmark of the city.
With the rising demand for ecological mean of transport, bike racks become an essential element of any public space. Piano Street Funiture, ceated by ADDI that combines bench and bick rack into one simple form. It can serves as a perfect buffer in between the existing highway structures to define the interior and exterior of Holyoke Art Park.
Besides bikes, skateborads are also an alternative form of transportation for the younger generation. By providing a storage rack, longboarders and skateboarders no longer need to worry about where
Outdoor movie events are activities that bring firends and family out of their homes and into the community to enjoy an outstanding show under stars. From action to Holyoke hisotry documentaries, it is
Sign and banners attract the attention of the people and hence are a popular mean of promotion. They inform people about upcoming events such as local festival or fair. It is also an option to generate incomes.
Art has helped to give birth to new ways of thinking about many domains of contemporary life. An art wall gives freedom and opportunity to local residents and artists to reflection upon themselve .
There are numerous reasons and countless circumstances where one may find onself need of a port-a-john. When planning an outdoor event, one will quickly realize that having a porta potty on site means everything.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION Bringing the communities spritiually and physically in to the desgin process of Holyoke Art Park, a public art project was also proposed along with the Art Screen: “The Portrait Wall.” Inspired by the front facade of the Liverpool Everyman Theatre, where 105 photograph images of ordinary men, women and children from the region represented over three storeys of the newly constructed theatre’s frontage. Architect Steve Tompkins and theatre designers Haworth Tompkins called it the “Everyman for Everyone Portrit Wall,” beacuse it would not accomplished without the helps of all the participants. Moreover, it expresses a feeling that Everyman is completely owned by the local people. Similar process could be apply in Holyoke Art Park, however, the portraits will be printing on custom transparent sticker then paste on the glass surface instead of cutting into the aluminium panels.

When thinking of parks, what comes to my
mind is flowers, trees and plants that create greenery
in urban areas. I wanted to designed an art park for Holyoke that that not only
display arts but also create a lot of green spaces for the people of this city. I created
many zones for different purposes, stage area, seating
area, art area and green area. A path was designed to pass through all the zones in
the park from one entrance to another. Areas for community
gardens are created at one end of the park for people
who enjoy gardening. Moving along the path, you reach the
Art zone which is an open lawn where local artist can
display their arts. The seating zone contains benches that
are raised from the grass to avoid creating too many impervious surfaces. Right next to it, the staging area
is paved with wood right underneath the highway. Attached to the existing
infrastructure is metal panels that moves and reflects
sunlight to light up this hidden area. At night, lights are
directed to these panels to create shimmery effects and underneath the grass chairs.

DESCRIPTION: The site rests under interstate 391 in an urban enviornment. The idea is to provide the residents of South Holyoke and the surroundings neighborhoods a space that will allow them to celebrate and gather as a community. These neighborhoods include South Holyoke, Elmwood, Churchhill, and Springdale. The project is a combination of two strategies, one that divides the site into a series of dierent zones and platforms and the other a means of turning it into a vibrant and dynamic space.
