Story and Photos by Pat Krause It was a Very Merry

Christmas Day at the Palm Springs Convention Center for over 2000 children, adults and even seniors. Everyone was included in this special day. A delicious dinner of a roll, salad, green beans, turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy along with assorted pies was served by the many volunteers that chose to spend the day and be a part of this event. There was face painting, a magician show, free haircuts and of course a visit to Santa for the little ones.

The line of children and their parents was long but the kids were each given a gift from Santa as they sat on his lap. Some of the littlest ones didn’t like Santa and cried but smiled when they were given a wrapped present. Over 1,600 gifts for the smaller children were handed out and another 400 went to the teens, those in-between 12 and adult. Volunteers handed out more than a hundred gifts to seniors as they sat to enjoy the meal. The smiles on the faces made everyone’s heart a little lighter and happier.

The event is put on by

The Well in the Dese r t t ha t helps to assist the homeless, needy or those alone with hot meals, delivery service etc. The Christmas Day event is the largest event of the year for Well in the Desert.

It has grown each year and this year was the biggest. That shows there are a lot of people in need or alone during the holidays. President Arlene Rosenthal stood on the stage with volunteers that helped children meet Santa. This is a big thrill for her to see all the smiling happy faces for so many people in our Valley.

The dinner was served in the main room at the Convention Center. The whole room was filled with families and children. Almost every table was filled with diners. For some this will be their only Christmas meal or toys for their children. Even the seniors were

not forgotten on this special day with gift cards and theatre tickets. Businesses across the Valley contributed to make this day special. Savory’s kept the food hot and trays filled for the volunteers to distribute. Palm Springs Mayor Rob Moon served Gravy for the Mashed potatoes. It took well over 200 volunteers on Christmas day and many others spent hours wrapping gifts and setting up. Volunteers feel this is a wonderful way to “Give Back” to those less fortunate

Sunnylands celebrated their anniversaries with a get together at Sunnylands on December 16th. Over one hundred people came to this private party. Champagne was served and valet parked the cars. Chairs were set up in the main lobby at Sunnylands.

Geoffrey Cowan, President of the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands welcomed the guests and spoke about Sunnylands and how it became the Camp

David of the West. The first celebrity couple to stay at Sunnylands was Mamie and President Ike Eisenhower. Presidents, Kings and Queens have all been guests at Sunnylands in the last 50 years. A proud tradition that is continued today with summits

being held by President Obama. Michael Landes, President

of Eisenhower Medical Center Foundation, spoke about Geoffrey Cowan and how he has had such a major part of Sunnylands and is leaving to go to USC. Sunnylands and its staff will miss him. Jan Salta and Suzy Leprino are co-chairs of the upcoming 45th anniversary gala. They said they had hoped to get Lee Greenwood to perform but his price was more than they could afford so they held an open call for local talent to sing. Sarah Hagar was chosen and gave a solo performance for the audience singing Winter Wonderland.

Anne Rowe, Director of Collectables and Exhibits read letters from President Eisenhower to the Annenberg’s that showed a friendship between them. The letters were

very interesting and showed something the public doesn’t get to see. The last speaker was Dr. Khoi Le, Cardiologist at Eisenhower. Le Spoke about the amazing strides that have been made in cardiac care in the last 20 years. They do about 600 procedures a year and pacemakers keep people alive a lot longer. He joked about how they thought he was too young when he came to work at Eisenhower and how proud he was of his parents who left Viet Nam with him as a boy and were in the audience.

A reception with appetizers and drinks was held outside on the patio that overlooks the beautiful gardens of Sunnylands. Food was provided by The Kitchen for Exploring Foods. The night was a little chilly but there were heaters to keep everyone warm.

By Janice GoughIf there’s one

overriding outlook for the financial markets in 2016 it’s this: Big gains are not expected.

Many market strategists expect market volatility will rise in 2016, which, as always, poses a challenge for investors. Investors can manage increased volatility in several ways. The market could be more volatile in the first half of next year than this entire year. Volatility may be caused by different factors: Fed policy and uncertainties around that, the state of the European economy and effectiveness of QE, the dollar’s strength and living in a

“more uncertain and dangerous world.

The weakness in oil markets is expected to continue though prices could hit bottom at some point, and the dollar is expected to remain strong though not quite as strong as it’s been relative to other major currencies. Commodities are saddled with enormous losses, especially in the energy sector.

The change in U.S. monetary policy, following the Fred’s first rate hike in almost 10 years will color market performance not only in the U.S., but globally.

Here are the some investment considerations for 2016 :

1. Buy Into QE — Favor Japanese & European Stocks Over U.S. Equities: Less than three months after the Fed slashed interest rates to near zero and adopted a massive asset buying program in December 2008, U.S. stocks hit bottom, then rose almost steadily, more than tripling in price by mid-May of this year, before retreating slightly. Now the central banks in Europe and Japan have adopted similar easy monetary policies, using quantitative easing and

near zero or negative rates to boost economic growth, which is also expected to buoy stock prices.

Bank of America strategists expect that European stocks will return just 0% to 5% on a total return basis in 2016 compared with 11% to 14% for Japanese stocks and 6% to 8% for U.S. stocks.

2. Hedge Foreign Currency Exposure: The divergence in central bank policies will continue to play out in the currency markets, where the U.S. dollar is expected to remain strong relative to other currencies, though possibly not as strong as it has been. The Canadian dollar should see a rise in value. It is important for investors to consider currency risk more seriously. Returns could be eroded by dollar appreciation.

3. Favor U.S. Large-Cap Stocks Over Small and Mid-Cap Stocks: During an aging economic cycle, like the one we’re experiencing now, large-cap stocks tend to outperform small and mid-cap stocks over the six months and 12 months following a Fed rate increase.

That’s not surprising since large-cap companies have greater access to capital when rates are rising.

Investment bankers favors mega-cap stocks in the S&P 100 over the broader large-cap S&P 500 index. The institutional outlook for equities may not just be optimism for stocks so much as a commentary on the state of the lagging bond markets.

4. Own Tech and

Biotech: Technology is the only sector showing “notable outperformance” relative to the broad market during the six months following a Fed rate hike and tech continues to show strength one year after the first hike. Technology will prove resilient in the face of rate hikes once again, supported by earnings potential, and increased spending on technology by companies trying to remain competitive in their own markets.

Biotech, which straddles the tech and health care sectors, is another favorite among strategists for 2016. The biotech industry expects a 21% increase in earnings for, which is currently trading at 14 times earnings.

5. Buy a House or Homebuilder stocks: Now is an opportune time to buy a home, especially for those who want to lock in what will likely be the lowest rate on a fixed-rate mortgage for years to come.

Those rates haven’t increased yet, but they eventually will unless the Fed reverses policy, which is not expected. The Fed’s new rate-rising regime will initially boost only short-term rates, affecting variable rate mortgages, but eventually rates will reset on long-term fixed rate mortgages. (The 30-year fixed rate mortgage prices off of the 10-year Treasury note.) Knowing that rates will rise will help push people off of that straddling position. At least early on that could be constructive for homebuilding stocks. The last time the Fed embarked on a new, tighter rate regime, in 2004, homebuilding stocks rallied 33%, followed by 25% gain the following year.

Investment Ideas for the new year

HOA Homefront – Reader Questions – CommitteesBy Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL

Mr. Richardson: I am the treasurer of a

committee, which is the bank for funds raised by our various clubs and organizations. We use those funds to pay for projects. This year, our board told us that we had to hand over any funds over our budget at the end of the year to the board because the funds represented “profit”, and therefore did not belong to our committee.

Could you explain this? B.H., Cherry Valley

Dear B.H.:Committees normal ly

serve by board appointment and typically do not have independent legal authority – they make recommendations to the board and operate within authority specified by the board.

Because the funds collected by the committee are association funds, they are under the board’s jurisdiction and control.

T o p r e v e n t misunderstandings, boards should provide each committee a written charter, clearly specifying its responsibility and authority. This should include how funds are handled. These charters should be adopted by the board in an open meeting and provide to each newly appointed committee member.

Best, Kelly

Dear Kelly:I have requested copies of the

architectural committee minutes. They reply that I am not entitled to them. Am I not understanding Civil Code §5200(a)(8) stating that meeting minutes must be made available for inspection by the membership?

K.M., Newport Beach

Dear K.M.:Civil Code 5200 lists, among

the records a member is entitled to review, minutes of committees formed under Corporations Code 7212. Section 7212 references “committees of the board.” These less-common committees are created by the board as sub-committees composed entirely of directors. However, most committees are committees of the association. Rather than minutes, they make recommendations, which hopefully the board relies upon. Those recommendations should be in the form of written reports to the board.

Thanks, Kelly

Kelly: Civil Code 5210(a)(5) requires

that committees with decision-making authority keep minutes. Our architectural committee has such authority but does not meet. The submittal is sent to each committee member who then signs a page approving or disapproving the submittal.

If committees have decision making authority, must they hold meetings open to the membership? Should the approval forms be contained in a “book of architectural approvals” so members can see what was approved or disapproved easily?

P.W., Laguna Niguel

Dear P.W.:Does your committee truly

have decision-making authority or are its decisions subject to board review? If it is required to keep minutes which are open

to member inspection under Section 5210(a)(5), those minutes should be quite brief. Minutes should only record actions taken, not the reasons behind each decision. The action is approval or disapproval.

The Open Meeting Act (Civil Code 4900-4955) applies to board meetings, not committee meetings. However, if a quorum of the board participates in a committee meeting, it has become a “board meeting” under the definition of Civil Code 4090, and all the requirements of board meetings then apply.

Well-managed associations should have a record as to the architectural approvals given to each property, but those records are not included in the records subject to inspection under Civil Code 5200. Civil Code 5215(a)(5)(F) states that interior architectural plans are confidential and not to be produced. So, it would not seem that a member would be able to inspect the architectural approvals, for example, given to neighbors.

Thanks for your question, Kelly

By Desert Star StaffSAN FRANCISCO, Dec.

28, 2015 -- San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera is demanding the full cooperation of recording artist Justin Bieber’s record label and distribution company to identify and punish those responsible for a guerrilla marketing campaign that includes pervasive ads spray-painted on public sidewalks to promote Bieber’s album, “Purpose.” Herrera, who called the graffiti vandalism “illegal and actionable” in a letter today to executives from Def Jam Records and Universal Music Group, vowed to “aggressively pursue all available penalties and costs from those responsible for lawless marketing tactics that intend to financially benefit your respective companies.”

San Francisco Public Works has for weeks responded to neighborhood complaints about the stenciled ads, which have otherwise persisted undiminished through several rainstorms. Unlike other recent instances of illegal sidewalk advertising that was chalk-based, according to Herrera’s letter, the Bieber-related graffiti appears to have been applied with permanent spray paint. Such defiant guerrilla

marketing tactics have become an increasingly unwelcome sight to many San Francisco residents, according to their reactions on social media, in published news accounts, and in complaints to City officials.

“Far more infuriating to the San Franciscans I hear from is commercially-sponsored graffiti vandalism,” Herrera wrote to Def Jam CEO Steve Bartels and Universal Music General Counsel and EVP Jeffrey Harleston. “This prohibited marketing practice illegally exploits our City’s walkable neighborhoods and robust tourism; intentionally creates visual distractions that pose risks to pedestrians on busy rights of way; and irresponsibly tells our youth that likeminded lawlessness and contempt for public property are condoned and encouraged by its beneficiaries—including Mr. Bieber and the record labels that produce and promote him.”

“Our sidewalks in San Francisco are not canvasses for corporate advertising, and we have made that clear. Yet these guerrilla marketers believe they are above the law when it comes to blighting our city and we will take a strong stand against them,” said San Francisco Public

Works Director Mohammed Nuru. “The definition of graffiti is tagging someone else’s property without permission, and they certainly did not have our permission to do this to our sidewalks.”

The Bieber-related vandalism represents the worst example of the problem’s recent re-emergence over the last year, according to the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office. In his letter today, Herrera noted that he is working with City leaders on legislation to “substantially enhance civil penalties” for unlawful guerrilla marketing

tactics. San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin has already begun drafting the legislation, which will include input from Herrera’s office and San Francisco Public Works.

“Graffiti abatement and prevention are important aspects of protecting the quality of life in San Francisco neighborhoods,” said Peskin. “Unfortunately, current penalties for ‘guerrilla marketing’ graffiti seem to reflect an acceptable cost of doing business by irresponsible companies competing for consumers’ attention. It’s clear that we need to enact tougher penalties to more effectively

discourage this practice. I’m grateful to City Attorney Herrera’s office and San Francisco Public Works for working with me to improve codes intended to keep our sidewalks and neighborhoods clean.”

State and local laws authorize San Francisco’s City Attorney to pursue civil litigation for such unlawful guerrilla marketing practices. Such actions could secure court-ordered injunctions, civil penalties of up to $2,500 for each violation, and restitution for fees and costs if successful. Source: PRNewswire-USNewswire

minimum-wage workers in California will be making an extra dollar an hour starting on Friday. The Golden State’s minimum-wage increases from $9 to $10 an hour on Jan. 1. But labor advocates plan to continue their push for $15 an hour.

Sean Wherley, senior communications specialist for the Service Employees International Union’s United Healthcare Workers West, said $10 just doesn’t cut it.

“At $10 an hour, that’s less than $21,000 a year for a full-time worker,” he said. “That’s barely enough to cover for yourself,

much less if you have children. Particularly in coastal areas, but even throughout rural areas, that’s not enough to get by.”

Two different branches of SEIU are promoting separate ballot measures next November. One would raise the hourly wage to $15 by 2020 and mandate six paid days off for illness. The other would raise the wage by the same amount by 2021.

Critics of these measures have said they’d raise costs for small businesses and lead them to cut hours or jobs. Wherley countered that workers will have more money to spend, which benefits the economy overall. He said a statewide measure would

level the playing field between cities.

“This is going to be uniformly applied, so no city can claim that one has an advantage over the other,” he said. “This is what is going to lift people into a better existence, one where they can provide for themselves and their families.”

San Francisco and Los Angeles already have passed $15 minimum hourly wages that go into effect in 2018 and 2020, respectively. The national minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. More information on existing minimum-wage laws is online at dir.ca.gov. Source: Public News Service

CA Latino Advocates File Civil Rights Claim over Medi-Cal

California Spending Far Too Little to Combat Smoking

By Desert Star StaffCalifornia is violating the civil

rights of Latinos by underfunding Medi-Cal, the state’s health-care program for low-income families and the disabled, according to a complaint filed in federal court this week.

In the complaint, a coalition of Latino advocates argued that Medi-Cal reimbursement rates are so low that many doctors refuse to take it, which impedes access to health care. Catha Worthman, an attorney on the case, said the fact that almost two-thirds of Medi-Cal recipients are Latino makes this a civil rights issue that violates the equal protection clause of the Affordable Care Act.

“You have a system that has been created which is separate and unequal in health care,” said Worthman, a partner with Feinberg, Jackson, Worthman and Wasow. “Access is inferior in Medi-Cal compared to the general population and the law requires that it be equal.”

One of the plaintiffs is a Los Angeles woman, Analilia Jimenez Perea, whose son has cerebral palsy. She said they had to wait a year and a half to find a neurologist who accepts Medi-Cal.

Right now, Worthman said, the Golden State only reimburses doctors who treat Medi-Cal patients about half of what the state pays for treating seniors on Medicare.

“We’re seeking very particular remedies, which include raising the reimbursement rates,” she said. “So. While the case charges discrimination, the remedies would benefit everybody on Medi-Cal.”

The complaint does not speculate how much it would cost California to raise reimbursement rates enough to convince more doctors to take Medi-Cal. The Office of Civil Rights, part of the federal Department of Health and Human Services, is expected to open an investigation.

By Desert Star StaffSACRAMENTO, Calif. –

Anti-smoking advocates are pressing for a $2 a pack tobacco tax in the wake a recent report that says California is seriously shortchanging smoking cessation programs.

The annual report from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, called Broken Promises to Our Children, monitors how states spend the billions of dollars from the tobacco settlement of 1998.

It found that California spends $65.6 million a year, which is just 18 percent of what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recommends.

Jim Knox, vice president of government relations for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, says what’s worse is that money comes from the existing state tobacco tax, not from the tobacco settlement.

“Back in the late 1990s, the California legislature and then-Gov. Gray Davis decided to use the money to get the state out of a budget hole,” he states. “And now the annual payments just pay off the debt on the loan they took out back then to balance the state budget.”

The report did have some good news – only 12.5 percent of adult Californians smoke, compared to 16.8 percent across the country.

John Schachter, director of state communications with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, says the tobacco companies spend almost $10 in marketing for every $1 the Golden State spends on smoking cessation efforts. And that ratio is 20 to 1 nationally.

“We’ve made so much progress, that people and legislators and policy makers may think the battle is over,” he points

out. “But regardless of what states are doing – and unfortunately they’re doing a lot less than they should be – the industry is not letting up.”

A coalition of health groups called Save Lives California is gathering signatures to put a measure on the ballot that would raise the tobacco tax by $2 a

pack – and dedicate the money to smoking cessation programs and to shore up Medi-Cal, the state’s health insurance program for low-income families and the disabled.

By Desert Star StaffA wildfire in Southern

California has forced the temporary closure of one of the main interstate highways, as well as mandatory evacuations in the area, which is threatened by the fast-spreading blaze ravishing hundreds of acres of land.

The brush fire that engulfed some 1,200 acres on Solimar Beach near Ventura has resulted in the partial closing of the coastal 101 Freeway, which runs all the way to the Canadian border, on Saturday. As the fast-spreading inferno torched hillsides near the beach, mandatory evacuations were ordered.

“Even if we do open up the roadways, it’s still not a contained fire,” Ventura County Fire Department Chief Norm

Plott told reporters. “It’s a very dynamic fire. We’re not quite out of the woods yet.”

Cal Fire reported that the fire is 10 percent contained. More than 600 firefighters are battling the blaze that still poses a threat to oil, gas, power and railroads in the area.

No deaths or injuries have so far been reported from the fire that started at around 11:00pm on Friday near the coastal city of Ventura. The fire that initially burned roughly 100 acres of land in the 3000 block of the West Pacific Coast Highway was soon spread by strong winds as high as 50 miles per hour.

Dry vegetat ion also caused the fire to grow rapidly, fire officials said. In the early hours of Saturday morning, the fire prompted mandatory

evacuations for the Solimar Beach area as the blaze threatened about 35 homes in the community. Voluntary

evacuation is currently in effect for the Faria Beach residents.

Rescue teams from Los Angeles County Fire Department

and Cal Fire, and the Orange County Fire Authority deployed helicopters with water tankers to contain the spread of the fire.

By Desert Star StaffLOS ANGELES - Volunteers

in L.A. are racing today to finish building 10 tiny wooden houses to give to the homeless before Christmas. They’re part of a group called “My Tiny House Project LA” a movement to build stop-gap shelters that is now active in San Diego and Oakland. The structures are just big enough to lie down inside.

They’re on wheels so they’re off the ground, and they feature a small window and a door that locks. Founder Elvis Summers places them wherever he can around town making a difference, one down-and-out person at a time.

“There’s human beings out there in the cold that need help. It’s the right thing to do,” says

Summers. “And it’s Christmas. The best Christmas present would be for someone to step forward with land so we could build a small community, get the people warm and safe and off the street.”

Summers built the first house for a homeless neighbor in April. His photos on Facebook went viral and it soon became his life’s work. So far, he’s raised $110,000 and is building them full time along with a team of volunteers.

California has 116,000 people living on the streets and only enough shelter beds to accommodate a third of them.

Homeless advocate Lisa Kogan just started a similar project in San Diego, but the first house was impounded

by police last week and its new owner, a homeless man named “Red,” was arrested for lodging without consent and encroaching on public property.

Kogan says she bailed Red out, they’re getting the house back, and she hopes someone will donate land to put it on.

“This house wasn’t just providing shelter, it provided hope for one person,” says Kogan. “He loved it so much. He said that it was the first time he’s had four walls and a roof over his head in a very long time.”

If you’d like to help, both Summers and Kogan have pages on Facebook and the website Go Fund Me.

Best Christmas Present for the Homeless: A Tiny House

By Desert Star StaffEight people have been

confirmed dead since a series of tornadoes ravaged north Texas. A preliminary count by weather authorities show 11

tornadoes have already hit the Dallas area, but that number is likely to grow.

Officials in Garland had first confirmed the death of five people after one tornado hit

an intersection. Another three have been confirmed dead in Collin County, according to the Sherriff’s Office, as cited by CBS DFW. One infant died in Blue Ridge, and another two

people in Copeville; all as a result of the storms.

The National Weather Service’s Anthony Bain said it is too early to know the extent of the damage, and more should be known about the situation in Texas after daybreak.

The exact number of people injured remains unknown. “As of right now, we are still in the search and rescue mode. We still have some homes that have been demolished and not everyone in the homes has been accounted for,” Rowlett police spokesman Detective Cruz Hernandez said, according to the AP.

Ripping through residential neighborhoods, the storms tore off roofs and uprooted trees, mangled vehicles, damaged power and gas lines, and sent debris flying along a 40-mile stretch running through Dallas from north to south.

Shelters are being set up by

The Red Cross to assist those who have lost their homes. However, the population is still not in the clear, as earlier twisters were accompanied by torrential rain and hail that could cause major flooding from north Texas to eastern Alabama.

The tragedy struck Texas just one day after a devastating tornado hit north-central Alabama. Both are part of a wave of tornadoes that has swept through the South and Midwest during Christmas week. The Alabama tornado was first spotted in Birmingham and caused substantial damage, but no fatalities.

Earlier, fourteen people were reported killed, along with dozens injured, by some two dozen tornadoes and uncharacteristic torrential rains that have hit Tennessee, Indiana, and Mississippi over the past few days, the latter state bearing the brunt.

By Desert Star StaffYou know who I feel sorry

for? Today’s politicians. You’ll laugh at this, but hear

me out. This is a very tough time to be a politician — whether running for office or trying to lead while holding office. The women and men who’ve undertaken to represent us face circumstances that make campaigning and governing unusually challenging right now.

Not that they’ve ever been easy, at least in my lifetime. Our size, diversity, and multi-layered government structure; the number and complexity of the problems our political leaders face daily; and the divided politics of our time, which make settling on coherent policies especially challenging — all these combine to make being a politician in a representative democracy one of the most demanding jobs around. Several features of the current political landscape, however, give politics a sharper edge and make it far more difficult to navigate.

For starters, our political discourse, from city councils to state legislatures to Congress, is less forgiving than it was a generation ago. Political opponents are no longer just people with whom we happen to disagree — they’re people who need to be shamed into silence. They can’t be trusted, they can’t be negotiated with, they’re self-serving and unpatriotic, and when they’re not incompetent, they’re scheming, ill-informed and ill-intentioned. This rhetoric is not just calculated demonization. The

extent to which politicians today genuinely distrust the other side is something new in our politics. It makes progress on the issues of the day extremely complicated.

This is exacerbated by politicians’ awareness that voters have lost confidence in our traditional political leadership and are searching hard for alternatives. You see this in the rise of candidates like Donald Trump on the right and Bernie Sanders on the left, who speak to voters who are looking for someone to express their anger and frustration.

Why are Americans upset, and more willing than usual to rally to outlying candidates? I don’t think there’s any great mystery. For starters, we have a society that is deeply concerned about economic insecurity; as the Pew Research Center reported recently, the American middle class — for decades the stable anchor of economy and society — is in trouble and no longer in the majority. People are moving up, but most are not, and some are moving down. Small wonder that immigration causes so much concern.

You can add to this the fear of terrorism and a deeply unsettled view of the major changes taking place in American society: the rise of big data and its attendant loss of privacy; the migration flows that whittle away at some communities while causing others to change unrecognizably from month to month; the tensions that diversity, arguments over gender, and

racial conflict all produce; the fluid and ever-changing patterns of religious belief and identity that have shaken many communities loose from the institutions that once moored them; the decline of the traditional, objective media. America today is an uneasy place, and we see this reflected in voters’ frustration and pessimism.

With next year’s elections still almost a year away, voters are mostly just looking around. They like candidates who express their anger and resentment, but that’s in part because they’re not measuring candidates by whether they seem fit for the presidency or Congress or the governor’s mansion. Voters are just now starting to hold candidates up to the standards of the offices they seek; as they do, the unsettled political environment in which we find ourselves will grow a bit less uncertain.

But the long-term issues — the fears and uncertainty and

the forces driving them — won’t have gone away. Which is why I feel great sympathy for politicians at the moment? The skills we need in our political leaders, like the ability to approach those with whom they disagree with a measure of good will and openness to negotiation and compromise, are not held in high esteem by the voters or by the loudest voices in their own parties. It’s easy for a politician to pander to anger and frustration. It’s much harder to face a roomful of disparate opinions and forge a consensus behind a solution. Yet, that is precisely what many politicians recognize our country needs.

Lee Hami l ton is a Distinguished Scholar, Indiana University School of Global and International Studies; and a Professor of Practice, IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 34 years.

A Very Tough Job for politicians today

You become more and more aware of others as the year progresses. You begin to say, “I see, I understand, I know more now.” This comes from Mercury, helping you develop new thinking, communicate with kindness, and connecting your past, present and future. You interact and move about with speed and a new state of happiness. Breathe rhythmically. Swim. Care for yourself.

It’s important to remain focused upon health and healing. Research what is most nourishing for your body and blood types, what is your “dosha.” Find a “functional doctor”, a new type of doctor that investigates the sources of illness. Find a natural wellness dentist. Do all things needed and necessary to remain healthy. You will need to manage daily affairs with more efficiency. A change comes soon.

You experience new motivations and new actions in the New Year. You may feel fiery, driven to creatively express yourself. At first you experience intuitive revelations as Mercury retrogrades. You remember the past, all

relationships, the ways you used money and resources. You will remember deaths, too. From these memories, you will organize your future life. With sunbeams.

You begin to learn new things, new ways of communicating and interacting with others. Negotiation becomes a skill you seek to acquire. Notice the ideals flowing through your mind. Record, journal, ponder upon, draw and share them. Use your knowledge. If we don’t use a gift it disappears. Analysis, instinct and intuition are gifts offering you purpose and help to achieve goals. What are your goals?

You are an artist. Many recognize this. You may or may not. In some lifetime you will be aware that art and creativity are ways you learn about yourself. Daily life remains an in- depth process of regeneration. You will experience new foundations & new beginnings this year. With finances, home, and in the continued shifting of all daily life endeavors. All that you do and encounter will be fruitful.

New self-identity meets with old self-identity and you will have a

choice as to which identity you want to be, how you want to identify yourself, and what self you will project into the world. Even though Virgo talks a lot and is out and about in the world, Virgo keeps part of the self hidden from view. Virgo is concerned always with communication, health and well-being. Do not toil or be troubled this year.

Take extra special care of yourself this year. Everything that happens, all that you encounter will have an expansive, larger than usual quality to it. Read T.S. Eliot. Memorize a few lines from his “Love Song.” Follow your intuition to the letter this year, especially in terms of health. If seeing doctors, find the very best ones. Seek meaning and have faith in those who love you.

Think about truth this New Year. All levels of truth, all dimensions, patterns and relationships to the truth. Then speak the truth. This may not be easy for you and/or for others to hear. The truth sets us free. Truth holds us in its care. The truth has variety in its simplicity. Truth steadies us. Truth has a deep connection to intuition. Truth offers us a foundation to stand upon.

Venus and Saturn are in Sag as the new year begins. You may feel resources are no longer available. They seem to have up and walked away. This is partially the situation. It’s the no longer useful that is gone. When we feel nothing’s left, it’s because new realities are pulsating like stars directly toward us, creating new structures and ways of being, new resources, plans and agendas. Have patience, be as routined as possible. A bit more wild is good.

Considered practical, you’re also imaginative and a bit unusual. You’re curious, too, and generous with information, sharing all that you know. For some reason I sense it’s time to create a journal of daily life. One that you draw, paint and color in. A deep sense of the creative is permeating your life. It’s from Neptune. There’s wisdom in creating this journal. Take time from your busy schedule for this creative art. It will have meaning later.

Neptune will be in your 2nd house of resources for years. Beginning this year, take very special care of finances and resources.

Everything may feel changing and fluid. Things will constantly seem to shift. It’s important during this time of change to maintain health and well-being in all ways. Do not forego this. Create nourishment in all that you do. Pray for what is needed. Have faith.

Everything in your life is in a state of preparation. For what will come forth in the coming times. Pisces talents become more recognized through the years. At first Pisces is hidden by Neptune’s waters. Then Pluto takes over and Pisces becomes potent and powerful. What happened to the confused fish, people ask? Pisces all of a sudden becomes a leader (and savior) in a world in need!

By Desert Star StaffThe holidays can be quite

the merry marathon. Between work parties, family gatherings

and New Year’s Eve on the town, it’s a lot to handle. Here are some helpful tips for navigating the busy holiday

season social scene in style.Bring the Holiday Spirit(s):

If you’re hosting a holiday party, you’re probably busy taking care of all the little details. Hanging stockings by the chimney with care. Making sure the gingerbread men don’t escape.

Finding the time to make custom cocktails for each guest can be time intensive. This year, try a delicious option that can be made days in advance, so your party prep goes smoothly. It’s mulling time!

“Making mulled cider or mulled wine is a great way to liven up a holiday party that isn’t time-intensive,” says Tom Macy, Bartender and Co-Owner of The Clover Club in Brooklyn, NY. “Nothing sets a festive mood like ladling out warm mugs of cheer from a simmering pot on the stove, as it fills the room with a great smell.”

Try out Tom’s recipe for Mulled Cider. Combine one gallon apple cider, 15 to 20 cinnamon

sticks, 1/4 cup cardamom pods, 1 1/2 tablespoon whole allspice, 1 1/2 tablespoon whole cloves, four whole nutmeg, zest of two oranges and 1/2 cup dark brown sugar. Bring to a boil, take to a simmer and let it sit for 30 to 45 minutes. Remove from the heat and strain the spices. Serve immediately or chill for later use.

For spirits, Tom recommends anything brown -- bourbon, cognac or apple brandy. For more of Tom’s favorite holiday cocktails and a mulled wine recipe, check out TomMacy.com.

Looking Fly When It’s Chilly: With mistletoe abounding and potential New Year’s smooches at every turn, it’s important to look and act your best. Even in chilly weather, there are still ways to look fashionable.

“Make the most out of the smaller details and accessories, and make them your own,” says Christopher Hunt, Editor at-Large for AskMen. “You can do more than throw on a bubble jacket.

Try a coat with a warm shearling hood. Complement your outfit with your scarf. Ditch your knit gloves for leather driving gloves or cashmere. Add a little flavor to your knit cap. Whatever you do, put your personality in it.”

Winter is also a time for men to grow out their facial hair, which Hunt sees as another great opportunity for customization.

“Facial hair is truly a gift,” said Hunt. “The cold weather is your best chance to experiment with a beard or a goatee or even take a crack at a ‘stache. Try something new. Maybe you’ll find your next smooth year-round look.”

Hunt suggests smoothing up with the BIC Flex 5 razor, which features a precision edging blade to shape the hard-to-reach spots and a Balancing Sphere for better shave control. For more information, visit BicFlexRazors.com.

This holiday season, look good, feel good and party in style. StatePoint

Tips to be Smooth During the Hectic Holidays

The truly enchanting, magical “Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities “ marks the 35th production of Cirque du Soleil. They first came to our fair city of the angels in 1984 when Los Angeles hosted the Olympics. Since then the company has crafted countless touring shows as well as long running stationary shows in Las Vegas like “O,” “Mystere” and “Love,” a tribute to the Beatles.

In “Kurios”, forty-six artists from fifteen different countries bring a dazzling Victorian era-themed extravaganza to life under the company’s famous blue and yellow big top now at Dodger Stadium. And while the acts are in the Cirque tradition of high-flying trapeze artists, acrobats and contortionists who seem to have no bones in their bodies, this whimsical confection

seems altogether new and re-imagined.

It opens as a train steams in through the center of the stage. At this point all sorts of performers, dressed in amazing costumes like that of Karl L. Ecuyer (Mr. Microcosmos) and the very teeny-tiny Mini Lili (Antanina Satura) step out and begin to dance, creating a festive mood that prepares us for all the amazing acts to follow. The opening alone is worth the price of admission.

Michel Laprise, writer/director, and the Cirque staff of designers and costumers have created a world of surprises as curios in the onstage cabinet of curiosities come to life. In Rola Bola, a balancing act that defies belief, a man dressed as an aviator perches atop all sorts of

rolling, moving objects without falling off. He then does it in the air above the stage on a suspended platform. The chair-balancing act takes on a new twist when the balancing act below is also performed in the air upside down creating a mirror image of what is happening below.

In one segment, two performers leap and balance between two poles with romantic grace. Later a young girl rides in on a bicycle before being lifted into the air where she performs using her bike as support. And for laughs, there is a delightful clown who serves as master of ceremonies. He also performs several skits. In one, he introduces us to the most wonderful circus we will never see. He calls it “The Invisible Circus” and thanks to visuals showing the effects of

his movements, an unseen performer climbs up a ladder and leaps off a diving board. Next comes the lion you don’t see, but you do hear. The end result is not only clever, it is truly funny.

The whole show is a visual treat featuring more than one hundred costumes and 426 props, more props than in any other Cirque show to date. And of course there is the imaginative music that accompanies all of the acts.

“Kurios,” at Dodger Stadium,

1000 Elysian Park Ave. in Los Angeles. For tickets and information go to cirquedusoleil.com/kurios or call (877) 924-7783. Runs through the month of January.

Medical Center. Tickets sold out early as everyone knows and love Lainie Kazan. A Q&A always follows these intimate lunches with the artist. Guests get to mingle with the star of the day.

Don Martin did the job as an interviewer in an Actors Studio Style. Martin asked the questions and Kazan answered with stories of her life in the entertainment world. Kazan said she was so happy to be back to CVRep and feels they are a great organization. Martin read her credits that were numerous, as Kazan has had an amazing career with many awards. Kazan has been in Broadway hits, famous movies and many TV shows.

Kazan spoke about her early career as an understudy for Barbara Streisand and how she was told she would perform one show. She invited her whole family and friends only to be told she wasn’t going on after all. A few nights later, she was told

she would be going on but she was not supposed to call her family. She called her mother and her mother did. Kazan has a great sense of humor as most of her stories had a funny part that made the guests laugh and enjoy.

Ron Celona, Founding Artistic Director of CVRep spoke about the new strides they have made with a new piano for musicals and extra storage for props. They held their first world premier with, Happy Hour, starring Gavin MacLeod. New shows coming up for 2016 are, A Class Act, I Am My Own Wife and 4000 Miles. CVRep also provides Adult and Children’s classes in acting with top conservatory instructors. Watch for upcoming luminary lunches too.

-This year you can celebrate as a family and still have time for a parents-only party with a whole new set of New Year’s Eve countdowns on Netflix designed for preschoolers, tweens and everyone in between. Kids can pick their favorite character or ring in the New Year again and again with countdowns featuring Oona and Baba of Puffin Rock, Care Bears & Cousins, Inspector Gadget, the Project Mc2 girls, and all of their DreamWorks Animation friends including King Julien and Mr. Peabody & Sherman.

According to new research from Netflix, more than half of parents around the world (58%) would jump at the chance to put their kids to bed before the clock strikes twelve on New Year’s Eve. With six on-demand countdown specials launching today, you

can make 10, 9, 8 or any time midnight. You choose when it’s time to say goodnight and the kids choose how to celebrate with their favorite characters:

• Puffin Rock residents Oona and Baba re-live their adventures from the past year and celebrate with the Northern Lights, nature’s very own fireworks.

• Care Bears & Cousins head to Share Bear’s Shake Shack to gear up for a belly badge-tastic countdown in Care-a-Lot.

• Inspector Gadget saves New Year’s Eve from a mischievous M.A.D. agent just in the nick of time for a dazzling firework display.

• King Julien lives up to his party animal persona with a countdown to dance your way into the New Year.

• Mr. Peabody and Sherman venture around the world to gather their favorite talk show

guests for a star-studded countdown event featuring Hiccup and Toothless, Puss in Boots, the Croods and the entire Dinotrux team.

• Project Mc2 stars McKeyla, Adrienne, Bryden and

Camryn team up for NOV8’s most important mission yet: Party!

• While 97% of parents across the globe are spending New Year’s Eve as a family, how the celebration unfolds varies by region.

• Parents in the US, UK, Canada and Australia agree 9 p.m. is the new midnight. Nearly half of parents in these countries say they’d countdown those famous 10 seconds by 9 p.m. (49%).

• Parents down under can’t wait for bedtime. One-third of Aussie parents (34%) admit they’d hit the sack themselves after kissing the kids goodnight -- long before midnight.

• Italian and French parents are getting cozy with their significant others after lights out. Parents in both countries most look forward to spending time with their other half after putting the kids to sleep

(51% and 43%, respectively). • Parents love a good

party in Spain and Mexico. 50% of parents in both countries can’t wait to kick off the parents-only party after tucking in their little ones.

• American parents aren’t afraid to play trickster. 41% of US parents have or plan to use a special New Year’s Eve countdown as a way to get their kids to bed early.

• Brazilian parents say it’s all about family time. Nearly two-thirds of parents in Brazil agree the best part about an on-demand countdown is being able to celebrate the holiday as a family (63%).

No matter where you are, start your party anytime, anywhere by searching New Year’s Eve Countdown on Netflix. And we won’t tell them it’s not midnight if you don’t.

By Carlos HerreraCOACHELLA VALLEY -It’s that time of year again.

We start thinking about what we want to do differently next

year and what our new year’s resolutions will be. A lot of people told KMIR News they were not really sure what their New Year’s resolution was and some people

did take a few minutes to think about it.

Sometimes we wonder, what if this year had gone differently? We also ask ourselves what if we

could have made those changes this year? Although for some that questions is easy to answer, for other it is difficult. Unfortunately as an adult , it may be a bit more complicated. “Hold it right there, I probably need to think about that one for a minute,” Eugene, Oregon resident Carrie Meadowcroft said. Some would not actually change anything, because hey had a good year, “This 2015 was a great year for me in a lot of ways,” tourist Joan Bissel said. Other believed there is always room for improvement. “It actually is a good question to ask yourself because usually if you take time to think and reflect inside we can see yeah there’s things that I could change,” Bissel said.

So, what exactly would people change? “I’ve been asked that question by a lot of people, by my wife,” tourist

Stanley Newhoff said. Looking back to last year, according to Nielsen, the top resolutions were, stay fit and healthy, lose weight and enjoy life to the fullest. “Be really healthy, and strong and just workout a lot and just get to be in good shape,” Bissel said. But, some have other ideas. Many people we spoke with believed they would want to be more responsive to other people. “When you work really hard and are really busy you can’t pay attention to other people’s needs,” Newhoff said.

As 2015 speeds on by and we get ready to receive 2016, it’s important to remember to always aim higher, experts said. “Just focus on what you want and what you want to do,” Cathedral City resident Austin Havener said. Source KMIR

NEW YORK (AP) - With the nation still jittery over shooting massacres in California and Paris, New York City officials sought to assure revelers Tuesday that the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square will be the safest place in the world - heavily secured by thousands of New York Police Department officers, including a new specialized counterterrorism unit.

“Leave the worrying to the NYPD,” said James O’Neill, chief of the department. “People should feel safest this New

Year’s Eve because we’re there.”Police Commissioner William

Bratton said there were no credible threats to the city ahead of the holiday. Yet officials also acknowledged that there were limits to what they could do to ensure security, especially outside the tightly controlled blocks at the heart of the celebration. In much of the city, the focus will be on fast responses to any emergency rather than preventive measures like security checkpoints.

“The ability to protect everything al l the t ime everywhere is not possible in any venue anywhere in the world,”

Bratton said Tuesday at a news conference in Times Square.

About 1 million people are expected to pack the blocks around Times Square to watch the 11,875-pound Waterford crystal ball drop. Partygoers trying to get close enough to see and hear the musical acts that perform throughout the evening will be screened with hand-held metal detectors twice - once when they enter one of the 14 access points to the secure zone and once when they enter pens where they must stay lest they lose their spots.

Outside that zone, revelers and vehicles can come and go as they please.

Nearly 6,000 officers will be assigned to the festivities. Visitors will see heavily armed counterterrorism teams and bomb-sniffing dogs. Rooftop patrols and NYPD helicopters will keep an eye on the crowd, and plainclothes officers will blend in with revelers. Newly graduated officers will take part.

“On New Year’s Eve, the department will be out in force,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “There will be a tremendous number of officers you will see and many you won’t see.”

The bomb squad and a unit specializing in chemical and biological threats will sweep hotels, theaters, construction sites and parking garages. They also will patrol the Times Square subway station, and certain exits will be blocked off. The NYPD will rely on a network of thousands of closed-circuit security cameras blanketing lower Manhattan, parts of midtown Manhattan and the subway system. About 20,000 smartphones were handed out to officers this year that will allow police to quickly transmit information on potential threats.

“New Year’s Eve in New York City will be the safest place in the world to be,” said Chief James Waters, head of the counterterrorism unit.

And this year, a specialized

counterterrorism unit of 500 highly trained officers will be deployed to respond to any emergency.

The unit was first formed after attacks in January at the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. Bratton said the department is constantly evolving based on new information as well as the recent attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California.

Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, Wiz Khalifa, Charlie Puth and Demi Lovato are among the musical guests schedule to perform this year. When the clock strikes midnight and the ball drops, so will 1 ton of confetti - scraps of paper with well wishes for the upcoming year.

After the show, sanitation crews will get to work cleaning up from the celebration, working through the night to dispose of an estimated 50 tons of garbage, including confetti, party hats and other leftovers from the revelry. Source KMIR

By Desert Star StaffA Chicago police officer,

responding to a domestic disturbance call, shot and killed a 19-year-old student and his 55-year-old neighbor, a mother of five. The grieving mother of the teenager said she had been hoping to “get help” from police.

The police were responding to a call from a man named Antonio LeGrier, who said that his son appeared to be a “little agitated” and had been trying to bust open the door of his bedroom in the middle of the night. But a neighbor said the teenager had been armed with a metal baseball bat.

“Upon arrival, officers were confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon, fatally wounding two individuals,” police confirmed in a statement, not releasing the officer’s name. Authorities said the matter remains under investigation.

The second victim was a 55-year-old neighbor, Bettie Jones, who had been celebrating Christmas with more than a dozen family members, and was shot

“through the door,” according to her cousin. Jones had reportedly been asked to keep an eye out for the arrival of police.

“How are you just going to fire through the door?” wondered the grieving family. There was a single bullet hole in the wooden door, according to Reuters, however details of the incident remain unclear.

“You call for help and you lose someone… That has to stop,” Legrier’s mother Janet Cooksey said. She told local channel WLS-TV that her son was “having a mental situation” and sometimes would “get loud, but not violent.”

Antonio confirmed his son had emotional problems, but said that it didn’t warrant him getting shot and killed, AP reported.

The incident follows a round of protests against Chicago police brutality, with more and more demonstrators calling for Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s resignation and an investigation into his administration. Hundreds of people have been gathering on the streets of the city, claiming the police are

killing civilians instead of protecting them.

Amid the protests, a Chicago police superintendent was forced to resign and the mayor created a special police accountability task force to review officers’ conduct.

The latest incident is another case of the police overstepping their boundaries, Carl Dix from

the US Revolutionary Communist Party told RT.

“To say that they were confronted with an armed individual so they had to shoot…a bystander?! That makes no sense,” Dix says. He insist that in a normal society trained law enforcement personnel should know how to deal with a suspect armed with

a baseball bat without killing him.“But in this society police get

to kill someone like that, and then they get the benefit of the doubt when the question gets raised,” he added.

Looking for some timely ways to spend those Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy and other gift cards that arrived during the holiday season? Here are a wide-range of music-related releases that are now available.

Artist: SpoonTitle: Gimme Fiction (Merge)You might like if you enjoy: Beck, Radiohead

Tell me more: Austin-spawned Spoon has proven to be one of the most interesting and experimental American rock acts of the last two decades, and it was the band’s 2005 album “Gimme Fiction” that catapulted the troupe into a well-deserved upper echelon of modern-day indie rock heroes. Now Merge Records has issued an essential 10th anniversary limited-edition of the Spoon masterwork on double-LP (180g), double-CD and digital. Disc one features the original 11-track album remastered by Howie Weinberg from the original tapes, with the disc’s amazing run including propulsive power-pop perfection (“Sister Jack”), shimmering art rock (“The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine”), alt-dance (“I Turn My Camera On”)

and driving psychedelic folk rock (“I Summon You”). And there is a second disc filled with a dozen previously-unreleased demos from the period. Information: mergerecords.com.

Artist: CreedTitle: With Arms Wide Open: A Retrospective (Concord Music Group)You might like if you enjoy: Third Day, Three Doors Down

Tell me more: Post-grunge rockers Creed enjoyed a short, but dazzling career in the late 1990s and early ‘00s scoring more than dozen radio hits and racking up around 40 million in sold records around the globe. Now the Florida-spawned rockers’ heavy imprint is revisited on the three-disc “With Arms Wide Open: A Retrospective.” The wealth of material includes a version of the Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues” recorded at Woodstock in 1999, acoustic tracks and rare demos. While the collection is available digitally on amazon, the CD configuration is available exclusively at Walmart stores. Information: creed.com.

Artist: Hank WilliamsTitle: I Saw The Light: The Unreleased Recordings (Time Life)You might like if you enjoy: Hank Williams, Michael Ubaldini

Tell me more: Country music simply doesn’t get any better or more authentic than Hank Williams, whose work and legacy is celebrated on “I Saw The Light: The Unreleased Recordings.” Williams was in his early 20s and arguably at the peak of his career in 1951 when he recorded 143 songs for the Mother’s Best Flour Company. Performing with his regular studio band, the Alabama native performed his hits as well as songs that he would never record anywhere else. Time Life has compiled more than 50 of those tracks on “I Saw The Light: The Unreleased Recordings” on a box set that sheds new light on Williams. The outstanding box set also includes a bonus DVD that provides insight into these long-forgotten recordings and features interviews with Williams’ daughter Jett Williams and two members of Williams’ band (steel guitarist Don Helms and singer “Big Bill” Lister). Sadly, Williams passed away on

New Year’s Day 1953; he was only 29. Information: TimeLife.com.

Artist: Buck OwensTitle: Buck ‘Em! Volume 2 - The Music of Buck Owens (1967-1975) (Omnivore Recordings)You might like if you enjoy: Gram Parsons, Dwight Yoakam

Tell me more: Whether you pick up “Buck ‘Em! Volume 2 - The Music of Buck Owens (1967-1975)” because of the sterling sound courtesy of Michael Graves’ remastering or simply to catch up on the legacy of Owens (who died at age 76 in 2006), the two-disc audio collection is a set that celebrates the groundbreaking father of the so-called “Bakersfield sound.” The four-dozen collection spans uptempo country-western originals (“The Kansas City Song,” “Down in New Orleans,” “The Streets of Bakersfield”), ballads (Including a tender live version of “I’ll Still be Waiting For You” and the lovely duet “Today I Started Loving You Again” with Bettye Swann”), and humor-filled singles such as “Big Game Hunter” and “(It’s A) Monster’s Holiday” that

were among Owens’ final hits. Information: omnivorerecordings.com.

Artist: Carl HallTitle: You Don’t Know Nothing About Love: The Loma/Atlantic Recordings 1967-1972 (Omnivore Recordings)You might like if you enjoy: Al Green, Ben E. King

Tell me more: While Carl Hall isn’t nearly as well known as Al Green, Solomon Burke and Ben E. King, the late singer’s four-octave vocal range and innate abilities to make any song his own are beloved by fans. On the aptly-titled “You Don’t Know Nothing About Love: The Loma/Atlantic Recordings 1967-1972,” 19 choice tracks recorded by Hall are featured on a single-disc compilation that showcases his power to sing gospel and soul with a power and authority rarely equaled. Among the gems on the disc are a potent version of the Beatles’ “The Long and Winding Road” and and a soulful remake of The Rolling Stones nugget “Time Is On My Side.” Information: omnivorerecordings.com.

By Desert Star StaffNEW YORK - Each year,

thousands of “Dear Santa”

letters are received by the U.S. Postal Service’s Operation Santa program. As “Chief Elf,”

Peter Fontana oversees the New York location, where a team of “postal elves” responds to the

letters and email messages, and sends gifts to children who might not otherwise get them.

Fontana, who has been one of Santa’s helpers for more than two decades, is retiring but said he’s taking some priceless memories with him. They include a telephone call he had just received before opening one particular letter.

“A mother writing for her children saying that they live in the basement and the children are sleeping on the floor, ‘Can you send us some beds for the kids?’ And when I put that letter down, to me - ‘til today this makes the hair stand up on my arms - it was a bed company asking how they could help Operation Santa,” he said.

Fontana said he wonders if ol’ Saint Nick had anything to do with that phone call from the bed company looking for ways it could help the Operation Santa

program. A “lady elf” currently is training to take over as Chief Elf when Fontana leaves.

Children aren’t the only ones who write to him, Fontana said. Adults send Santa their wish lists as well, and many are a sign of the economic times.

“And then you see a lot of letters that are not from children, that are from adults,” he said. “And they’re asking for things, like - single parents are asking for help, or even the families, the husband and wife, they’re not working or not making enough to cover the bills and they’re asking just for a little assistance like winter coats, food.”

Fontana sa id next Christmas will be the first time he’ll get to celebrate the holiday with his family in years. Source: Public News Service

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Millionaires, a group that counts Warren Buffett, Bill Gates Sr., and chief executives of Fortune 500 companies among its ranks, has released a report exposing a growing wealth gap between

the 400 richest Americans and the rest of the population.

Chuck Collins, an heir to the Oscar Mayer fortune who co-authored the report with the Institute for Policy Studies, summarizes what they found.

“Our main finding is that

wealth is getting much more concentrated in the hands of a few than we thought,” he said. “So, the wealthiest 20 people now have more wealth than the bottom half of the population, 152 million people.”

Collins said it’s important for millionaires and billionaires to speak out against inequality and advocate for policies that can reverse what he calls “dangerous trends.”

According to the report, the richest 100 households now hold as much wealth as the nation’s entire African-American population, and the top 186 people on Forbes magazine’s annual list of the wealthiest Americans own as much as all Latinos in the United States.

While 11 members of the Forbes “Top 20” built successful companies or were shrewd investors, Collins said, nine made the list through inherited wealth. Because current policies favor the rich, he said, the United States is

at risk of becoming a nation with the kind of hereditary aristocracy that Americans fought a revolution to overthrow. The report said extreme inequality corrodes the democratic process, polarizes communities and impairs public health.

“It undermines healthy economic activity and growth, and it erodes social mobility, the ability of people who are not born wealthy to have the opportunity to become wealthy,” Collins said. “These inequalities undermine the fundamental American dream.”

T h e r e p o r t ’ s recommendations to close the wealth gap include raising the minimum wage, limiting the influence of money in politics, shutting down offshore tax havens and taxing wealth from investments at the same rate workers pay on income. By Desert Star Staff Ask any financial expert what

the ideal age is to start saving money and you’re likely to get the same response: “now.” Even at an entry-level salary, it is critical to start 2016 on the right foot and begin paving the way to financial freedom by setting aside money for short–term needs such as a vacation or an emergency, or longer-term goals like retirement.

“Having a savings strategy is crucial to a person’s overall financial well-being,” says Diane Morais, chief executive officer and president of Ally Bank, member FDIC. “There are simple steps Millennials can take to ensure that they are not only saving, but maximizing the earnings potential of their nest eggs.”

When it comes to designing a savings plan, Millennials should consider the following tips.

Choose Your Bank Wisely: Look for a savings account that doesn’t require a minimum deposit to open, doesn’t charge monthly maintenance fees, offers a competitive interest rate, and ideally, compounds interest daily. These features will help your money grow faster.

Your bank should offer both checking and savings products, since having one bank with both types of accounts makes it easier to transfer funds from one account to another depending on your immediate circumstances. For example, Ally Bank’s Money Market and Interest Checking accounts are interest-bearing, charge no monthly maintenance fees and come with free debit cards and checks.

Pay Yourself First: A lot of people think saving is about putting away money that is left over after other expenditures. To build savings consistently and faster, treat savings as a

mandatory expense in your overall budget.

Consider opening an online account to “automate” saving money and take advantage of rates that tend to be more competitive than their brick-and-mortar counterparts.

Specify Savings: Once you’ve found a bank with no maintenance fees or minimum deposit requirements, you can establish separate accounts for your special goals. Some banks will even allow you to assign nicknames to these accounts, such as “new car” or “vacation fund”.

Use Technology: Tracking your money on-the-go can make you more aware of your spending and saving habits. One iPhone app option is Ally Bank’s “Ally Assist,” a voice activated assistant that responds to inquiries, and analyzes savings and spending patterns.

The benefits of online banking include bill pay, click-to-chat assistance, online transfers and the ability to access your accounts anywhere and anytime.

Think Retirement Now: Beginning to save at a

young age is essential to ensu re a comfo r tab le retirement. It’s important to choose the IRA that is right for your circumstances. Traditional IRAs may give investors a tax deduction for the year the contribution is made, while a Roth IRA offers tax-free growth, meaning you owe no tax when

you make withdrawals in retirement.

While you may feel the pinch now by putting some of your hard-earned money away, developing good savings habits while you’re young will pay big rewards over the long term, helping you enjoy a more comfortable lifestyle. Source: StatePoint

By Desert Star StaffWhile flu and cold are

common to every region of the world, different cultures have developed their own solutions to tackle the all-too-familiar and dreadful symptoms.

Today it’s thought that 70 percent of your immune system lies in your digestive tract, so many of these alternative healing methods rely on food for its curative properties. While some alternative treatments have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration for efficacy, many people swear by them. If you are suffering this cold and flu season, incorporating these remedies into your get-well plan could be worth a shot.

• In Japan: Hot green tea is poured over a crushed ume, which is an alkaline-rich Japanese pickled plum. Drinking this “umeboshi tea,” full of iron and potassium, is said to help ease fever associated with the flu.

• In the Dominican Republic: A paste of honey, finely chopped onion and garlic, and the juice of at least half of a lime, is taken before bedtime. The garlic and lime juice, rich in vitamin C, boosts immunity.

• In France: For those with the flu, a homeopathic approach is taken using Oscillococcinum. This unusually named medicine has been a favorite flu fighter of the French for more than 70 years. Clinical studies show that it reduces the duration and the severity of fever, chills, fatigue, headache and body aches. It is recommended that you take it at the first sign of flu symptoms.

• In China: A restorative dish is made from healing fritillaria bulbs (Chuan bei mu) and an Asian pear. The center of the pear is scooped out to form a bowl. A teaspoon of honey is mixed with fritillaria extract, which is then poured into the pear. The covered dish is steamed for 45 minutes to create a warm elixir to

soothe the throat. For maximum effect, a honeysuckle and licorice root tea chaser provides added immune support.

• In South America: A plate of sliced onions is placed on a nightstand overnight. The scent from a freshly chopped onion helps break up mucus and congestion, just as it causes the eyes to water and nose to

run while cooking. Loaded with sulphur compounds, onions also improve circulation.

For more helpful tips about the flu, visit www.Oscillo.com for access to a four-part podcast series “Tackling the Flu, Naturally.” Experts explain how the flu virus works in the body and why having a strong immune system is so important;

how flu spreads; when children should stay home from school; and more.

By Desert Star StaffIt can be difficult for families

when an elderly loved one starts to weaken physically and mentally. While nursing homes are an option, most are extremely expensive, and most seniors would prefer to remain in familiar surroundings. Fortunately, there are now more choices available that can provide seniors the freedom to continue living safely in their own home.

The average cost of an assisted living facility is $43,200 annually, and the cost of a nursing home with private room can cost over $90,000 a year, according to the 2015 Genworth Cost of Care Survey. Such a huge, ongoing expense can have an enormous impact on the average family, whether they have prepared financially or not.

“Even for families where such costs are not prohibitive, parents are often reluctant to leave homes filled with years of memories, and be placed into an unfamiliar environment, living with strangers,” says health care systems expert Jack Zhang, President and CEO of the fast-growing health technology company, Vitall Inc.

Caring for older parents and relatives doesn’t necessarily need to involve relocation or spending tens of thousands of dollars annually. Zhang says there are a few important things to consider.

Communication Updates: New technologies make looking after and staying connected to the seniors in your life easier and more affordable. For example, HeyMomDad, the world’s first two-way communication and wellness monitoring system, allows loved ones to see and hear in real-time that elderly relatives are safe -- simply by opening an app on their smartphones.

Seniors need only press one button to talk to loved ones, notify them that help is needed, or to just say hello. Likewise, with one tap, users can instantly see, hear and talk back to parents through the high-quality HD video and two-way audio component. The camera can be controlled through the smartphone and directed to any location in the room, permitting a 270-degree view. It also includes night vision optics for clear viewing in dark rooms.

Beyond Monitoring: “Most seniors are reluctant to call 911 in an emergency because they’re embarrassed or don’t want to cause a fuss or incur an expense -- which can be as high as $1,200, even for false alarms where paramedics were dispatched,” says Zhang.

HeyMomDad gives seniors two different alert options. They can choose to alert only family and friends, or alert family, friends and 911. In addition, the HeyMomDad Bed Monitor tracks heart rate, breathing rate and movement at night.

Maintaining Independence: For many seniors, one of the most difficult parts of aging is the loss of independence.

When possible, families should consider making homes senior friendly, adding safety bars in the shower and bath, eliminating tripping hazards, improving lighting in hallways and outdoor walkways, and making kitchens more accessible with countertops and cabinets that can rise or lower with the push of a button.

And new two-way communication and monitoring systems can add further peace of mind. More information can be found at www.HeyMomDad.com or 1-800-352-0887.

Before making big decisions about your parents and aging relatives’ housing and care,

take new innovations into consideration. These alternatives can save your family thousands

of dollars, give you peace of mind and improve your family’s quality of life. StatePoint
