Message from the Mayor

I would like to welcome everyone to the New Year. I trust everyone had a fun and relaxing Christmas and New Years and are ready and raring to go in 2018. The New Year starts as the old one ended, hot and dry. I can only hope that the next couple of months bring some much needed rain.

First I would like to make amends for an oversight in the December "Yarns". I inadvertently forgot to mention that I had the honour of leading the naturalisation ceremony of Michelle O'Toole. It was very remiss of me, and I have great pleasure, as mayor, in welcoming Michelle into the family we call Australia.

I also have pleasure in welcoming our new Deputy CEO, Cassie White, to Diamantina. I hope Cassie, partner Mick Dunn and daughter Isla have a long and happy stay with us all.

In December it was the end of year break up in Bedourie for the council, which my wife and I had the pleasure of attending. It ended an historic year for Diamantina. Firstly the Boulia Bedourie road was finally sealed, thus making Bedourie the first town in Diamantina to have sealed access to the outside world. Secondly the optic fibre project was completed, connecting Bedourie and Birdsville to the world with world equalling connectivity, bringing the two towns into the 21st century.

It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of two of our long term locals.

Firstly, Joanne Lewington passed away after a battle with cancer. The family had a lovely memorial service in Birdsville, and I thank them for that. Joanne was a valuable member of the Diamantina family and it was sad to lose one of our own. My sympathy goes to Joyce, Bill and their extended families.

Secondly, Wolfgang John also passed away from a form of cancer, after many years of ill health. Wolfie, as he was known, first started visiting Birdsville in the 1970's and fell in love with the area. His visits became more frequent and longer until he moved in permanently, buying a house, setting up an art studio, then a gallery, getting married, and establishing a coffee shop. After working and living in Birdsville for some 20 years ill health forced him to move to Broken Hill then Sydney. Wolfie was a larger than life character who will forever be in my memory.

Think that's about it from me this month, keep cool but hope you don't keep dry.

Geoff MortonMayorDiamantina Shire Council

From out of the west they came to the shore That they were excited you can be but sure So much sand and water so much to play With bucket and spade they filled in the day Fun in the water running in and then out Til wave knocked them down then there was doubt Mouthful of water things weren’t so good Not like the bush where water tastes as it should Sandcastles were built so fine and so pretty With shells and grasses matched those from the city Holes were dug in sands that were soft So deep and so large no one then could scoff Closely watched by grandfather who was so proud With words and helping he encourages aloud These kids from the bush enjoying the day How much they’ll remember we can not yet say

CEO's Comments

As we welcome in 2018 our thoughts no doubt linger on what we are going to achieve during the year. For some it might be giving up smoking, for others it’s a change in life’s direction.

For me, there has not been a lot of time to contemplate this in the 5 weeks since the calendar clicked over, but some of Council’s past planning and action has borne fruit (new employees) who have settled into our towns. The year is starting with a positive mood, given the enthusiasm from our refreshed workforce following their Christmas break and the energy of the new employees.

I have commented to a few people that in the 4 years or so I have been with Council, this is the first time that all administration, workshop and facilities positions have had a person sitting in all of the seats all at the same time. All vacancies in the Birdsville parks and gardens team have been recruited and just waiting for the new faces to turn up over coming weeks. There are new staff in the road construction teams with a few more to arrive from across the length and breadth of the country. Recent recruits have come from Windham, Laura, Alice Springs to Brisbane and all points in between.

Not only will additional staff mean that we can continue to deliver services and projects, but many have brought young families with them which has increased the numbers at the schools which is great to see. The welcome BBQ, we held at the Bedourie hall during our staff induction week, was a great opportunity to meet the many new faces.

We welcome the following new employees, some of who are yet to arrive:Joshua Oehm – Diesel Fitter/mechanicDonald Jones, James Henry & Derek Smith – Birdsville P&GPhilip Bradshaw, Tim Penrose – Grader OperatorsBill Chalk, Ray Neilson & Damien Caught – MC Truck DriversCassie White – Deputy CEOVigandas Boguzis – Operational Works CoordinatorKurt Ball – Strategic Services Coordinator

Already this year we have held a Council meeting, had a week of inductions and training for staff, and have had visits from IT Vision who are installing new computer software which will form the basis of Council’s operations into the future. The workshop has been busy servicing and repairing much of our fleet with specialist assistance from Hastings Deering, Detroit, automotive electricians and WHP electrical. A lot of preventative maintenance has been done including replacing numerous hydraulic hoses and fittings (thanks sparrow) with something like 28 panels of glass replaced between windscreens, windows and doors panels. The workshop staff also squeezed in an automotive air-conditioning course so they are accredited to handle automotive refrigerant gases.

2018 promises to be a good one but a big flood would make it even better. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Leon Love

Council went on a well-deserved break from the 20th of December. Before breakup all construction plants were sent to the work shop in Bedourie for assessment, this allowed the work shop to do preventative maintenance so work staff will have a breakdown free start up on the 22nd of January.

Council works crew started with a 4-day Induction that consisted of going over new and renewed policies and procedures, first aid and work place health & safety modules.

All crews will work on completing the last of the Shire Road Flood damage.

The New Year has seen a nice change for playgroup as we have welcomed a couple of new families taking our total attendance over the school holidays to 11!

We had a great time exploring colours, shapes, celebrating Australia day and looking at the author Julia Donaldson’s books. We also did a lot of sensory play and created lots of messy fun.

In the coming month our activities will be centred on nursery rhymes, music and the author Lynley Dodd.

We hope to see you there Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 12.45pm.

Bedourie State School...

Welcome back to the New Year from all of us here at Bedourie State School. This year we started off relatively quietly with just our six Year One, Two, Three and Six students. Then in Week 2, things really heated up as our four new Kindies joined us, along with our new Cluster Teacher, Miss Sarah Dioth.

We have welcomed two new families into our school community as well: Kurt and Amy have enrolled two students at the school - Jacob in Year Three and Jamie in Kindy; and Jen and Rodney have Aiden in Kindy. Our other two Kindy enrolments are Klayton (Gorringe) and Sophie (Dunlop). Miss Kylie has also taken on the new role of Kindy Facilitator. We look forward to working together with all parents/carers, staff and students to provide the best possible learning outcomes for all of our students.

BIRDSVILLE LOCAL SET TO RUN 4500KM FOR BOWEL CANCER

Birdsville local Jenna Brook is set to embark on a 4500km run in aid of Bowel Cancer Australia. Averaging over 40km per day Jenna will run in excess of 100 marathons during her epic adventure which begins in Tasmania on February 18th. She already has the 10 pairs of shoes she'll be running through on standby and is looking forward to tackling the run head on making big noise about Bowel Cancer awareness along the way.

Having completed a number of multi-day walks and events, including a 15 day crossing of the Simpson Desert, Jenna is no stranger to the challenges that she will face in the coming months, although the challenge of actually running is somewhat new to her. Never one for breaking into anything more than a walk, Jenna says that ''while the task ahead to run a majority of the distance is daunting, it is also awfully exciting to see what my body is capable of''.

Bowel Cancer is Australia's second biggest cancer killer claiming 80 lives every week. 90% of bowel cancers cases can be successfully treated if they are caught early yet only 40% are caught early enough. "It's not ok that we are losing so many people every day to a cancer that is so preventable, treatable and beatable when it's caught early" Jenna says.

With her Grandad having survived bowel cancer late in his life and her father subsequently screening from a young age, Jenna began screening in her 20’s and has significantly reduced her own risk of developing bowel cancer by having numerous abnormalities removed. Jenna hopes to help others do the same by starting a conversation about bowel cancer and reducing the embarrassment that has gone along with it for too long.
