general manager’s message By Terra S. H. Waldron, CCM

Private clubs have centuries of histories and traditions which have contributed to their atmosphere and governance. As they say, "times are changing" and this is evidenthere at Desert Highlands as well. In thelast four years, we have had approximately 200 closings which means that nearly 1/3 of our Members are new Members. We have also seen a change in demographics with many younger residents and those who

continue to work while enjoying the club atmosphere. As a result of this paradigm shift, Desert Highlands will continue to respond to Member's needs and desires while trying to stay true to our traditions.

We will look back at our rich history and towards our stunning future during our DH 25th Anniversary celebration season beginning in October 2008. We have begun compiling DH memorabilia and stories and we thank everyone for their participation.

Desert Highlands continues to receive fabulous press both locally and nationally. The Scottsdale Tribune newspaper featured Desert Highlands in an article called “Teeing it up more than game in Scottsdale” on November 1st. If you missed the article, we have posted a link on our Member’s website for you to view. Nationally, LINKS Magazine has included Desert Highlands among its 100 Premier Properties in its 2007-2008 Annual Guide to the Best Golf Communities. We anticipate Desert Highlands will have more upcoming press and we are so happy to share our pride in this beautiful community and its amenities.

The cooler weather means the holidays are around the corner so please read your flyers for all the details on our traditional events and a new theme for the New Year’s Eve celebration.

Our fabulous tableside Flambé coffees are also back just in time to enjoy on a cool evening. As many of you know, the Board of Directors has made a change to the Clubhouse dress code to allow jeans in season throughout the Clubhouse for everyone, except on Friday and Saturday evenings in the Ventana Room where the dress code is country club casual.

While the holidays are a time of celebration, we wanted to bring to your attention the extremely strict and stringent new DUI laws so you can ensure you and your loved ones have a safe holiday season. The new DUI rules have significantly changed the risk reward decision about drinking a few cocktails and then driving. The main change is Arizona has significantly lowered the BAC (blood alcohol content) thresholds. These new laws could affect those that have a couple of drinks with dinner and then drive home. The new lower BAC levels are now so low that it does not take that much to register a 0.08. The thresholds and punishments for first time DUI offenses include mandatory jail time, driver’s license suspension, mandatory installation of ignition interlock device in your car and costly court fees, with second time offenses being drastically worse. For those with children, you must be aware of the felony DUI (.08 or above with a minor in the car less than 15 years old) consequences which may include the punishments listed above as well as involvement and action on the part of Child Protective Services. You may find more information on these new Arizona DUI laws online at http://www.azleg.state.az.us/ArizonaRevisedStatutes.asp?Title=28 . We share this message with you to implore that you not drink and drive; have a designated driver or take a taxi home if you have been drinking (regardless of how far you are from home). Also, never have even one drink if you will be driving with a person under 15 years old in your car. For your convenience and safety, Desert Highlands Members may arrange a sedan or limo service through Execucar for an evening out and charges will be billed to your Member statement. Simply call our receptionist at 585-7444 to make a reservation and then you can celebrate safely.

As the Desert Highlands staff looks forward to the holidays and festivities, we gratefully pause to thank you for your continued support and wish you and your families a safe and joyful holiday season.

As everyone is coming and going during this busy holiday season, we would like to remind you that if you are going to be out of town for an extended period of time, please give a call to the Security Office (585-8513) so that we can pay special attention to your home. You may also consider arranging weekly or bi-weekly home inspections through our Residential Services by calling 419-3712.

If you are expecting visitors during the holidays, please give us a call to Security so that we can be made aware of extra vehicles that may be parked in the driveway overnight. The CC&Rs require that no motor vehicles shall be parked or stored in or upon the Lot except within a closed garage, except as specifically permitted by the Association Rules. This mandate is directed to all Member owned vehicles. For short-term parking by a Member’s family or guest, a Guest Parking Pass is available through the Security Department. All vendors, visitors and guests of Members must park within the designated Guest Parking spaces upon the lot. Overnight storage of any vehicle on the street is prohibited.

We also see an increase in package deliveries during the holidays so I wanted to remind you of our package procedure. When a delivery service (Federal Express, U.P.S., or floral deliveries, etc.) arrives on the property, they will be granted automatic access during business hours. If the resident is not home to accept the delivery, the Security Center will do the following unless prior arrangements have been made with the Director of Security:

When the resident is not available to accept their delivery, the Security Center will sign for the delivery. The Security Department will not accept perishable deliveries at the Security Center (i.e. flowers, fruit baskets, meats, etc.) unless prior arrangements have been made in advance with the Director of Security. The Security Center will notify the Member by phone that a package is being held for them at the Security Center.

With the visitors coming and going to your homes, please call in advance to the Security Office so that we can enter them into our pass logs. This will alleviate the lines at the gate and allow us to get your friends and family to your home that much quicker.

If I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to call me at480-419-3753. Until next month, enjoy the holidays and stay safe.

We offer a big thank you to Mrs. Benvenuto and Mrs. Voss for having a great “Kids Halloween party” idea. On Sunday, October 21st, 48 children and their relatives enjoyed pumpkin drawing, fun games and piñatas at the Garden Amenities followed by trick or treating at Members’ homes. It was a wonderful day and we will repeat it again for the coming year so start planning those costumes.

The holiday season is upon us and we have a diverse selection

of festivities for you to celebrate. You will find more details on the enclosed flyers. Please be sure to call 585-7444 to make reservations so we can ensure service for everyone.

Santa’s Workshop & Holiday Brunch: December 15th is the perfect day to spend time with Santa starting at 9:30 am in the Clubhouse. Games, storytelling by Mrs. Claus and a delicious brunch will highlight the day. Please bring a present for the child (children) you are bringing to the Club; Santa will take care of the rest!

Hanukkah Dinner: On Friday, December 7th, a sumptuous Hanukkah dinner will be served in the Ventana room with no host cocktails at 6:00 pm and dinner starting at 6:45 pm.

Chef Festive Dinner: Share a beautiful holiday dinner with “new or old” friends in the Ventana room on Friday,December 21st. A four course pre-fix dinner will be offered.

New Year’s Eve Party: Cruise into the New Year on the S.S. Desert Highlands! After several years of “grazing, food stations and dancing”, we have changed this forthcoming New Year’s Evewith a plated dinner and added a Casino Night and a disc jockeyfor dancing.

Over the summer we lost some key staff in the kitchen who have moved on to new pursuits. Doug Harris, our Executive Sous Chef (who had been with us for the last six years) got his first Executive Chef position at The Hassayampa Inn in Prescott, Arizona. Morgan Malzahn (our pastry chef for the last year) has moved to Boulder, Colorado to be with her boyfriend Chad. Although we wish them well with their new

endeavors, we looked at this as an opportunity to improve our staff with two great new additions to our culinary team.

We have hired Dan Chagolla as our Executive Sous Chef. Dan has a wealth of experience including six years at The Boulders Resort and Golden Door Spa, two years at The Camelback Inn and seven years at The Princess Resort. All of these three properties have the coveted Five Diamond Award. Dan arrived in early September and has done an outstanding job right from the start.

We have hired Steve Bruni as our Pastry Chef. Steve also has a wealth of experience including ten years at The Boulders Resort and Golden Door Spa as well as seven years at The Phoenician Resort (a Five Diamond property as well). Steve joined us in early October and has already re-vamped the dessert menus and has had wonderful reviews from our Members.

I have had the pleasure of working with both of these gentlemen in the past and am proud to work with them again. I have been very impressed with their character and work ethic and know that they will be great additions to our staff.

We also have some new faces in the supporting roles as well: Steve Amine, Mark Hoenigman, Patrick Struebing, Michael Serna, Juvenal Villicana and Gloria Briggs (at the Halfway House). Please join me in welcoming them all to Desert Highlands!

Eat Well, Be Well.

tHe “truckers” got tHeir kicks on route 66… By Doug Westcott

Perfect weather, bridge, tennis, golf, blue and purple shirts, Route 66 theme and our largest turnout for Homecoming ever…sounds like a recipe for success, AND IT WAS! The day began with the Truckers and Diners squaring off in a knock down, drag out game of bridge, which was eventually won by the Truckers. While bridge was getting started, other Members were stretching out their muscles just prior to taking center court at the Tennis Center…for Homecoming’s second event. The

2007 Homecoming event had been decided once the dust cleared at the Tennis Center because the Truckers were once again victorious. As the morning events came to a close, participants switched their focus to the golf course where 130 players competed against each other in a four-person scramble format. With both teams in their team colored tee shirts, the Diners wouldn’t allow for a clean sweep, so with an outstanding performance on the golf course the Diners proved to be up to the task. However, for the Truckers it was two games to one and so the Truckers received the coveted “2007 Homecoming Champions” valuables pouch and the title of the Desert Highlands Homecoming Champions. CONGRATULATIONS TRUCKERS! Thanks to Vickie Martin Martin, Barbara Smolenski and the entire Homecoming Committee for all of their hard work and preparation.

Now’s the Time to PracticeNow that the Driving Range renovation is complete, Desert Highlands provides a state-of-the-art practice facility for Members and guests. The facility includes a range, short game area, putting course and practice putting green. However, in an effort to protect and to continue to provide these fantastic amenities, we ask all players to only hit bunker shots, short chips and flop shots in the short game area. And while using the practice putting green, please refrain from chipping as this green is to be used only for putting. We look forward to seeing you working on your game in an effort to drive down your handicaps.

Proper Practicing MethodsProper use of the range involves the process of hitting each range ball within the closest proximity of the previous divot. After taking your initial divot, the next range ball and each successive range ball should be placed either at the front, back, or side of the previous divot. As a result of this method, what you will have is a neat rectangular or square bare patch of dirt from which you have taken your divots (Exhibit B). This process reduces the amount of damage to the grass and keeps the effected area to a minimum unlike Exhibit A. In addition, it ensures that there will be grass for the next person to use. Above all, the recovery time for the range grass is greatly increased by controlling the damage to the area. We encourage all of our Members to employ the method described in this article. We are confident that your practice sessions will be more enjoyable and that you will see a significant increase in the quality of the practice range. If you have any questions or would like a demonstration, please stop by the Golf Shop at your convenience.

Congratulations to our Hole-In-One Club recent Acer:

As well as the health benefits of staying fit and healthy extending into later years, physical activity also can extend years of independent living, reduce disability and improve the quality of life.• Regular lifestyle activity is particularly important for older people for

the maintenance of mobility and independent living.• Strength-training exercises can improve muscle strength, which is

important for tasks of daily living such as walking or getting up from a chair.• Physical activity - and particularly training to

improve strength, balance and coordination - has also been found to be highly effective in reducing the incidents of falls.

• Physical activity can help improve the emotional and mental well-being of older people. It is associated with reduced risk of developing depressive symptoms and can be effective in treating depression and enhancing mood.

• Physical activity may improve at least some aspects of cognitive function which are important to tasks of daily living. It is also associated with reduced risk of developing problems of cognitive impairment in old age.

• Functional decline and decreased levels of physical activity associated with ageing:

o Crossing a road within the time allowed on traffic light controlled crossings requires an average walking speed that is higher than that achievable by most 70 year olds.

o In the over-70s, 25% of women and 7% of men do not have sufficient leg strength to get out of a chair without using their arms.

o Forty-seven percent of women aged 70-74 have insufficient leg muscle power to step up onto a bus without using their arms.

o Twenty percent of women and 14% of men over 50 do not have the flexibility to wash their hair comfortably.

Don’t wait until you are 70 before doing something about your health and fitness. Think of minutes spent exercising each day as money in your health bank; start investing today. • Try to be active every day in as many ways as you can. • Think of ‘being active’ every day as an opportunity, not an

inconvenience. • The more you move, the better you will feel. Put energy back into your life!

aDVice on staying Fit into later years By Kristen Hustead

Our negotiations for improved water quality from with the City of Scottsdale continue to positively move forward. Once the agreement is finalized, hopefully by year end, it will take one year to design the new water treatment plant and two years to build. The City needs to build a new plant regardless of what happens with our water quality so we are asking for a larger treatment facility to accommodate the golf courses needs. Please remember, once we do receive good water it will take some time to reclaim our soils. Poor quality water has been applied to the golf course since 1998 and it is not as simple a flipping the switch and the problems disappear. The sand topdressing and agronomy plan has and will help turn the corner quicker, but it will still take some time.

The poor quality of irrigation water returned in the middle of November. We did see a decline in the overall color of the turf. This timing of the poor water in conjunction with the return of carts onto the fairways and the cooler temperatures has caused the reduction of the bold green color. Additional fertilizer has been added to promote recovery as quickly as possible. We did have additional fertilizer in place prior to the return of the bad water but it still is a shock to the growing system of the plant and needs some recovery time. The hotter temperatures of October and early November also took a toll on establishing the winter grass. Those warm temperatures allowed the summer grass to grow more than expected, leading to some competition issues that also will require additional fertilizer to aid in maturing the winter grass.

The greens continue to perform very well and are rolling approximately 10 feet on the stimp meter. The staff has been working on sodding and plugging out the bermuda grass encroachment which is a never ending battle, but we continue to focus efforts to stay ahead of this problem.

The detailing of the transition areas is also an ongoing project. Drainage, raking schedules, dust control, and the tie-ins to surrounding areas are taken into consideration for maintenance of these areas.

The golf course maintenance staff continues to work very hard at providing the expected playing conditions. Please help by fixing your ballmarks and filling your divots.

Desert HigHlanDs - a Fine Place to Play!Every year I write a little piece about the fine tennis facilities at Desert Highlands and this year is no different. The annual upkeep as well as operational and capital improvements guarantee that all areas of your tennis facilities are maintained to the highest standards possible.

During the summer of 2007, all of the walls surrounding the Racquet Club and the outside amenity courts were patched and painted. Also, we moved the sleeves on the Racquet Club grass courts 14” toward the outside walls of each court so we could effectively ‘rest’ the two outside courts by using the middle court (same as is currently done on the field grass courts). Finally, the fall overseeding on the grass courts was spectacular; the grass looks better than ever!

The clay courts are also in immaculate condition. Recently, Tim Beyer from Lee Tennis (clay court specialists) visited our facility and claimed that our courts were in the best shape of any courts he had seen. This is a real tribute to our maintenance staff and to the fact that we renovate these courts every four months. In the next few years, we have plans to patch and resurface the five total Asphalt and Nova Probounce courts.

Tennis Gifts GaloreWith a terrific selection of men’s and ladies tennis apparel, accessories, racquets, and shoes available, stop by the Tennis Center to buy holiday gifts for the tennis players in your life. We have sharp new DH logo Prince crew neck shirts too! If we don’t have it, we’ll special order it! (*Please allow five days for special orders). We’ll make it easy for you and gift wrap your purchases too. All of this at 20% off retail prices for Members – great prices for great tennis gifts!

BBQ at the Tennis Courts The Racquet Club BBQs continue to be a big hit and will continue each and every Saturday from 11:00 am – 1:30 pm weather permitting. Menu items include Hamburgers, Cheeseburgers, Grilled Chicken sandwiches and Hot Dogs. Come on down to the Racquet Club to play or watch some tennis, shoot some hoops, throw a line in the lake, and enjoy the BBQ!

DH Tennis Enjoying Fundraising Events Our annual tennis calendar now includes three fundraising events: ‘Rally for the Cure’ ladies exchange (held November 2nd) as well as mixed doubles fundraisers for the Scottsdale Community College men’s tennis team (December 15th) and the ASU ladies team (January 5, 2008). Your support of these events is much appreciated by your tennis staff and by those that your donations aide. I really appreciate your continued enthusiasm toward these events----definitely ensuring that we’ll keep them on our annual calendar.

Our Program and Staff Have a Lot to Offer The hiring of our full time Assistant Tennis Professional David Smith has allowed us to offer more tennis clinics and programs than ever before. We now boast over 10 clinics weekly for adults and juniors. Our latest addition is a co-ed 3.0 clinic on Tuesdays from 10:00 am - 11:00 am. All lower level players (male and female) are urged to participate in this clinic, intended to polish up your skills and/or learn new ones. Also, if you are looking for a private lesson, give David a call at 419-3652.

Teams on a RollOnce again, two of our three interclub teams are near or at the top of their respective divisions. Readying for the playoff run are Doug James’ 4.0 men team (currently 1st place), and Shelly Harding’s 3.5 ladies team (currently 3rd place). Playoffs are this month and the spring season begins in late January. Results will be updated in January’s newsletter.

December Tennis Tip: (From David Smith, Asst Tennis Professional)Volley Preparation: Plan for defense, hope for offense. Expect backhand, want forehand. Tilt the head of the racquet slightly toward the backhand side. A backhand volley will never be a surprise. Reactions will always be quicker to the forehand side; windshield wipers will be gone forever!!!

Fire PreVention anD naos maintenance

Natural Area Open Space (NAOS) has become a household phrase around Desert Highlands as it covers and protects a very large part of Desert Highlands’ 850 acres. This beautiful preserved Sonoran Desert has always been a danger in the

summer months when the dry heat and lack of rain causes “extreme” conditions for potential fire. We have heard the news reports of the recent wild-land fires in Southern California. This event could happen just as easily at Desert Highlands. We have the continuing drought, lightning strikes, parched desert foliage and the wind necessary to spread the flames and it did happen nearby several years ago. We were fortunate that the fires did not reach us. This is a very serious problem that could impact us at any time in the future- especially in the dry summer months.

The City of Scottsdale Fire Department is working closely with the City of Scottsdale Environmentally Sensitive Lands Department to educate homeowners that live in communities north of the Central Arizona Canal which require NAOS areas on each parcel.

It is suggested that all homeowners should create a well-maintained, live vegetation zone to prevent damage to structures in case of wild-land fires. This is precisely the philosophy that Desert Highlands was founded upon. The Design Guidelines explains the four areas that make up your lot which are 1) Building Envelope 2) Private Area 3) Transitional Area and 4) Natural Area.

Think of the center of your lot as the core, or the heart of the lot, that makes up your home. The home sits within the Building Envelope and is surrounded by Private Area (yard/pool/flowers/manicured landscaping), next is the Transition Area outside your walls, and finally the area considered NAOS known as Natural Area.

To protect us from harm, the agencies mentioned previously have suggested the following preventative action for the lots at Desert Highlands. Maintain a 15-ft zone around your home; thin dead and down vegetation; perennial grasses and overgrown bushes; remove dead branches or branches touching the ground. Thin another 15-ft for maximum protection. A total of 30 feet from the existing residence is the maximum area. Walls on the lot and perimeter should be a maximum of 20 feet. In order to prevent fueling fire, this method will help to shield your home and its surroundings. We are still required to keep the NAOS natural; however, we now are allowed to create a transition area for added protection. The area that is untouched must be maintained in order to preserve existing vegetation so that the overall preservation of the Sonoran desert filled with indigenous plant material can provide a profound experience of living in this unique desert environment.

The Design Review Committee has conducted an audit of all lots at Desert Highlands to determine if the landscaping surrounding your lot is in need of thinning and is considered a fire hazard, not only to your home but to neighboring properties. If this condition exists, you will receive notice that you should take corrective action and have your landscaper contact Dawn Tenney for recommended changes to bring your lot into conformance with the City of Scottsdale Fire Department Guidelines. If you require names of approved landscaping contractors to help you make these improvements, please call Dawn Tenney at 480-419-3712.

real estate news By Carey Fassler

The media continues to report on the many homes available for sale throughout the Phoenix Metropolitan area. As I write this, a record 55,000 homes are for sale including a 31-month supply of homes in the Valley priced over $1 Million. Catherine Reagor of the Arizona Republic reports that at least one out of every three of these available homes

is empty with owners who are extremely motivated to cut prices. Many of these houses are investor owned and others are vacant because people have moved to other houses, unable to sell their first residence. Others are new homes that builders are offering great deals on. And, a growing number of vacant homes are owned by lenders that foreclosed on the properties. All of this means it remains a buyer’s market and sellers have a lot of competition now.

Despite the challenging real estate market, we have now reported 30 sales transactions consisting of 28 homes and 2 lots. Of these sales, 29 have closed escrow resulting in $2,025,000 or 27 net membership fee revenue.

Currently, we have approximately 32 homes available for sale ranging in price from $1,050,000 to $7,750,000 and there are 5 home sites available ranging in price from $575,000 to $850,000. For additional information on homes and home sites available for sale, please log onto www.deserthighlandsscottsdale.com. The Real Estate Section is updated daily and contains photos of all homes and home sites available.

While we do not have a Sunset Tour of Homes scheduled in the busy month of December, we look forward to the next realtor tour on January 9th from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. We encourage those of you who are interested to participate in the Tours. Tour Booklets will be available at the Security office the afternoon of the Tour.

In addition to real estate news, I am pleased to report that Desert Highlands has once again received national attention in the golf world. LINKS Magazine has included Desert Highlands among its 100 Premier Properties in its 2007-08 Annual Guide to the Best Golf Communities. Included in this edition is an interesting article about the transition from Developer to Member ownership among private golf communities with contribution from Desert Highlands General Manager, Terra Waldron.

I am further pleased to tell you about local coverage Desert Highlands received in the Scottsdale Tribune November 1st edition. The article, “The Golfing Life” featured several Desert Highlands Members and Director of Golf, Doug Westcott, along with photographs of the spectacular golf course. My sincere thanks go to those Members who agreed to be interviewed and/or photographed for this article. An online excerpt of the article is available on the Member's website.
